I have been back and forth on this whole Illegal Immigration issue and Bush's proposed Guest worker Program ever since its inception. Congress has been dilly dallying around with the bill and is coming off a 2 week hiatus called "Easter Break." We all obviously know by now how big of a controversy this has become and all the mass rallies that are taking place is pretty indicative of what Illegal Immigrants feel on this issue. Like any illegal would, they want a piece of the American Pie. As I have looked at this issue from various angles, a few points seem very glaring.

1) The claim that many people seem to make is that The US wants to finance its losses in Iraq by issuing temp work visas and thus racking in millions through taxes.Exercising a fine and taxing each Illegal once they get reinstanted, should bring in a healthy stream of future cash flows for the country. If this was true, the bill would not struggle as badly as it has with pretty much everybody divided on this thing.
2) The left wing media and Interest Groups are using a mass coersion technique by portraying the Illegal Immigration issue from a very humanistic perspective, infact reffering to them as Immigrants as opposed to Illegal Immigrants. The idea here is to make people feel guilty. Now, why should anyone feel guilty if they want to secure their borders and stop importing poverty and crime. Illegal Immigration at an Aggregate does not import crime, but poverty and economic deprivity fosters an enviornment for "potential" crime and social strain.
3) Various liberal Institutions and Individuals point their fingers to Corporate greed and a desire to lower Labor costs as the driving force behind, not Immigration as a whole but the escalation of Immigration, mainly Illegal Immigration. However, when you look at the tail end of this saga, there is political instability, corruption, dysfunctional and inept governments that don't address their respective countries grassroot problems effectively, thus perpetuating this vicious cycle.
4) I think the most sensitive and delicate issue in this debate is the Interpretation , Understanding and digestion of Laws, their implentations and how these Laws are loosely or tightly interpreted to facilitate political and social upheavels and crisis'. These are fundamental questions that ask how, someone who broke a so called Law several times repeatedly at various capacities can be given something that violates the code of Law that applies to everybody else? Democracy means freedom of speech and the right to express oneself, Under the US Constitution, but how many of those Illegals voicing their opinions and waiving their own flags have any sort of legal right to do so? As far as the implementation of Law is concerned I think, to a law abiding citizen in ideology, this situation has facilitated the rapid demise of the governments credibility. They ought to step up to the plate and stop this nonsense, of asking for something that "BY law" they donot have the right to. The left wing media should stop propogating the idea that disrupting this mass immigration movement would be draconian. If America grants Amensty, how will they prevent another huge illegal migration from happening again? It will encourage more people to exploit the loopholes of the country and undermine the creators and regulators of law.

We blame Capitalism and Greedy corporations for harvesting this field of laborers, but the US Government taxes, fines and regulates Corporations all the time so its not like they get a free lunch. Illegal Immigrants in my conclusion are Free Riders. This problem needs to be addressed swiftly, and a policy that eventually filters these people and tightens the system to minimize influx is in the best interest of the country in the Long Run.

i agreed. all the illegals should be picked up and sent home packing. No doubt about it. They broke the LAW. And anyone who break the LAW is a CRIMINAL.
If US government dosen't do this, it would be a slap on the face of all the legal migrants.
Also why is all the illegals aliens in USA is demonstrating, protesting and shouting slogans frequently.?
And did you see that many of them were carrying their national flag of origin.......
were they trying to make USA, a MEXICO or other country or what

If illegals are legalized that would be because of humanitarian reason not for anything else. All US governments has to do is pick up randomly here and there and start deporting them, this issue will go to the back burner. However, there could be exceptional cases like somebody who has lived here for twenty years and he knows nobody back home. In those cases, humanitarian case could apply.

For undocumented ones, I haven't thought how to deal with them. However, for those who overstay visa there are thousands of easy ways to fix this problem. Here are few of my solutions for those overstaying visas. They might sound stupid but I think they works.

1. Have driver's license expire on visa expire date and don't issue another driver's license without renewal of visa. As soon as somebody's visa expires, his social security number can be cancelled. He can't own property, rent and do anything not even take the utilities. All of his identifications become illegal.
2. Amnesty can be given to those who leave the country voluntarily not by legalizing them here so that they can go to their home country and apply their visa.
3. One big notice can be brought that whoever stays here illegally will be left in an uninhabited island on their own if they don't return to their country. This may cause big controversy if that's a dead end for illegals but if the illegals living in islands want to go back home should be allowed to leave right from there. Right now, similar thing is done only for Guantanamo prisoners who have other convictions.
4. If it comes worse to worst! How difficult it is deport Mexicans to their border? Ninety percent of illegals problem will be solved right there.
5. For illegals from other country, offer incentives like one in number 2 above or something like there might be a chance that they can get visa back if they haven't committed any crime while staying here.
6. For legals on those with tourist and student visas, offer incentives like if they go back and wants to come back again their previous legal status should help for their credibility. It already does though.

See how many ways can be imagined. I don't want to write anymore. It's just for the political reasons, the politicians want to address this issue separately.

Arko, those are some good proposals, it all comes down to what these politicians really want, the system has to be set up in such a way that furthur migration be really tamed

Well, come to think of it, I'm not okay with punishing corporations either. I don't think any investor would wanna lose money because of some of the things the US government may impose on corporations that break laws, knowingly or unknowingly. If we're gonna punish them for hiring illegal immigrants, let's ensure that investors are not hurt. Of course coporations are privy to the fact that they hire illegal immigrants. They're not willing to do anything about it. But as an investor, I don't wanna see any reduction in profit/earnins per share. Hell, people keep whining and bitching about how Wal-Mart sucks and yadda yadda yadda, but Wal-Mart has a whopping 1.8 million employees. Boycotting Wal-Mart for treating their employees like crap(whether true or untrue) may at the end of the day mean loss of jobs for some of these employees. Look what's happening to Ford. They openly supported gay marriage and some conservatives decided to boycott Ford( but we all know that Ford sucks, that's why they're crapping recently, but some of these boycotts do affect the companies). They're also having to deal with health insurance problems. So I think we need to think twice before meting out vengeance/ punishing corporations for the supposed injustice they are involved in. Tin foil hat theorists tend to suggest that corporations have this grand scheme to suppress the little guys. But let's think for a second.
However, things are just getting ridiculous, and there will definitely be a backlash. Was watching NBC just a few hours ago(one of those local channels) and they were saying that a whopping 60% who contacted the channel thought that yesterday's "a day without an immigrant rally" will cause a huge backlash. Similar sentiments were echoed by some of the callers to this one morning radio show I listen to in the morning.
Okay, this may sound a bit caustic, and I bet some of you are gonna crucify me for what I am about to say, but here's what I have been thinking. This may sound like a flip-flop from what I said earlier, but just hear what I have to say. It seems to me that America relies on people who work for less than minimum wage. For example, yesterday's rally all but shut down meat-packing industries. But here's the vicious cycle: if we legalize these people, will we not have to pay them at least minimum wage? So what exactly does that mean? We will need to import more illegal immigrants to fill up this vacuum and this process keeps on repeating. Not good for America because we're basically importing Mexico's poverty. So I think we need to maintain the status quo by not letting these illegal immigrants and their posterity have any chance in becoming American citizens. So how can that be achieved? Simple solution. CHANGE THE FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT. The fourteenth amendment guarantees that anybody born on American soil becomes an American citizen. We need to change this amendment and ensure that only Americans and green card holders are guaranteed this right. This will completely fix the problem and will also give us a pool of people who are willing to work for less than minimum wage. However, for this system to work, we need to secure our borders, because otherwise America will keep on getting inundated by immigrants primarily from South of the border. Perhaps the House bill could be tweaked a little bit such that only those who hop the borders from a certain point onwards are classified as felons. This will guarantee that we have a pool of second class "citizens" who will work for cheap. Sorry, but this seems to be the problem. We rely on people who work for less than minimum wage. However, letting them earn citizenship or granting them amnesty will only mean that we will need more second class workers. So who's gonna fill the void? Either that, or we need to reduce minimum wage.
So now they are singing the national anthem in Spanish. What's next, are we gonna have a Spanish national flag as well? Maybe tacos and burritos(and nachos) for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Spanish the de facto language of America? Let's think about it for a second.

One quick comment, sure it's true that corporations are supposed to be fined/penalized for hiring illegal workers, but from what I understand this law isn't being implemented. The illegl issue is a wedge issue for republicans, supposedly, but it seems to me that democrats are divided as well. Seriuosly, what can we do about this corporate lust for profit? I think minimum wage has a lot to do with this problem. Perhaps the government should just stay out of these decisions and let corporations set the wages? This issue is a true mess.

It would take a lot to change that 14th Amendment though...that would be something, but very controversial..

I don't know why ya all bitching about deporting illegal immigrants?
Though being a legal immigrant, I openly disagree with ya all. What the f*ck is wrong
with ya. You might have got a P.R or were born in U.S. But your parents weren't born over here. So what the f*ck ya think ya'self american? Why do ya forget that you have a nepali blood. Though a personal matter, I am dating a american women and can get a P.R as she is ready to marry with me whenever i want, But i don't want to be American or get a P.R.

I am proud to be Nepali and proud to carry the same nepalese blood throughout my generation. What defines you and your identity is your blood and your ancestral origin which of mine is Nepali. I don't feel proud shitting with other's pants. Though my pant is torn and damaged, I wear my own pants and shit. So fella's try to generalise this issue as this problem is not yours. Instead think about the nepal's current situation.
