Nepal is saluting human rights abusers.
Bhumika Ghimire
May 5, 2006

In Nepal we have a strange tradition; we forgive any crime if the
culprit is powerful. With power I mean, gun, money, name or social
status. Our history is full of example. Mr Baburam Bhattari and
Prachanda; what should I say about them? The self-proclaimed
revolutionary duo with the help of their gun carrying militia and
friends in high places, managed to kill 13,000 innocent people in last
10 years, destroyed millions worth of national property. And for all
their achievement, the newly formed government, lead by Girija
Koirala, has invited them to join the government. Yes, they are no
longer terrorists.

What does this tradition of "forgive the powerful" means to Nepal?
This means that we will never be able to live in society where life of
a person is respected, where everyone is equal in real sense, where we
have rule of law, where we have accountability. Tomorrow if I take up
a gun, manage to bring thousands of unemployed and disillusioned youth
with me and go on a killing and destruction rampage, I have a good
chance of becoming a minister or president of this country. No one
will ever ask any question, I will never have to answer to the family
of the killed, never have to look at the kids who lost their childhood
because of my "stupid" dream. I just need to invent some really brutal
means of murder and keep on killing people. Then my friends, after 10
of some years, all of you will invite me to lead the nation.

This is scary. Not because I will be the next president, but because
if the Maoists join the government, it would mean that in Nepal there
is no rule of law. Please tell me, do you want to live in a country
where there is no rule of law? Where someone can come and shoot you,
your family, neighbor in broad day light and no questions will be
asked? Your life has no value, my life has no value, anyone can be
killed, and anyone can be beheaded. Do you want to raise your kids in
this kind of environment? If not, then why are you standing in the
line to salute the murders from the jungle? Why are you clapping for
the gun carrying killers who killed your neighbor, abducted your kids
or destroyed your hospital? Why?

Hats off to Bhumika--who ever wrote this peice. Selfish world for selfish people. There should be real-heart virtue. Right. Again another 10 years long fighting will erupt, if these babauram and prachanda do not learn to walk together with the poor nepali and others alike---no matter which ideology they follow.

Dear UsNepal,
Hi & how are you ?

I am wondering. Why did you say if Maosit join the Government Nepal will be law less country ? What factors did you think Bhumi ji considered when she wrote this article? Why they shouldnt be joining goverment ?

Now, Do you want more bloodshreding in the country ? Don't you want peace ?
We all know Maos are problems but don't forget those who created those problems. Have you thought about it ???

Answer is simple - The Corrupted Royal Families, The corrupted bureaurocrats - Please dont' forget these two major Weaknesses we have in your system.

Like many of us, my family & the community have become the victim of Maos in the past. Even we have faced the wrost brutality one can see in his/her life period. Based on that I should be the hating them extremly and support all the words Ghimire ji mentioned. However, until when we will face such problems ? This trend must be ended. For that, it would be wise to bring Maos to be the part of the Governement. Otherwise we will be inviting the Khamerus Era ( back to Combodia) which has no end.

Thanks.

-BD

P.S - Many Thanks to B. Ghimire ji for the article. We need such materials to discuss so we can debate and have conversations in the future. However we need to discuss for a reason.

Great Article Bhumika. You have truly spoken the 'silent minds' of majority of Nepalese. I wont be surprised if someone starts to label you as a 'royalist' or 'mandale'. But the fact always remains true and the truth wins in the end.

Everyone wants peace but we need to think whether it is a short term or a long term strategy. The current strategy of the SPAM is definitely a short term in my eyes. Succumbing to the guns in fear of prolonging the fight does not seem right to me. At the same time I dont want the fight to go on. Some people are fast to question the feudal autocratic monarchy and its relevance in the modern world but the same people forget about the communists ideology and their relevance in this 21st century. Yes, I am confused whether communism is actually working in China and at the same time why is India and US against it? Do they actually execute the people as mentioned in western media? Well, we will found out soon in our own country.

SPAM is now talking about taking action against the so called 'royalists' and the war criminals. Isn't that interesting when M itself is not going to be tried for war crimes? Letting all the M's go out openly extorting money in the capital city is what we have to pay as a price for freedom, is that really worth it?

Shouldn't the M's laydown their arms first if they truly believe in people power? But the fact is that they know without guns, they are nothing. Besides, why would they see the need to laydown their arms, when the SPA is giving them everything they ask for? I am sure it wont be long when SPA splits into two groups Congress and Communists and the Communists will align with the M's and then as someone stated in this forum somewhere - Round 3 starts! My advance congratulations to the communists.

If you have a fox in the house, would you bring a tiger and let it loose to kill the fox or vice versa?

THAT'S TRUE. I WANT THE MAOISTS TO BE PUNISHED - HANG THEM IN OPEN PLACE TILL DEATH !
