What does the king want now?
FROMTHE NEPALI PRESS
Palace wheels
Samay, 18 May

At the height of People’s Movement II, the palace was demanding funds for a special car for the king, worth about Rs 1 million. On 18 April, the Ministry of Finance received a letter from the palace saying that the king needed a mine-proof car to tour the rough roads of the districts. Even after the palace lost its authority following the successful janandolan, palace officials did not stop pressuring the ministry to release the funds. Initially the budget unit was rushing to release the money but it has now kept the request pending.
King Birendra used only two cars all his life but this king is demanding new cars left and right at a time when poverty remains a major problem. In the last three years, cars worth about Rs 370 million have been imported for the king’s use, including a Rolls Royce and Jaguar.
Many are now wondering what luxury model is on the king’s shopping list today–we should know in a few months.

Actually this is why King Gyanendra failed in nepalese politics, whenever he sacked Deuba govt. he should have made various different leaders from different parties next PM and should have made them failure too and slowly should have took control over the power, as we all the innocent nepalese junta knows these leaders are good for nothing and very greedy, instead he took control over directly and made himself chairman, as his chamsas always remind him of being really great person with great personality and he is the one who can bring panchayat back, and telling him you are the one who is like your father King Mahendra and so on, Sarkar you can do it.

But this is not the same world as it use to be when King Mahendra ruled the country, come on, many people have more access, they are educated and don't have to wait forever to hear the news, the world is very small place these days.

Eventhough he took the power over, he should have said, " Well, i am not taking any salary from the state and we will be using all my salary, batha and every monetary benifits that i get from state, i am asking to use it for developement purpose and giving to needy once in rural areas and for the moist victims". Instead he raised his salary, not only his all the bhardar's salaries, palace expenses and in luxury things. Now its too late, its not because of him, it is because of those sallahakar, they should have given him good advice.

Now what he can do ! nothing, simply watch the things and see what his future will be in nepalese politics and as well as in history.

My two cents.

Peace

The luxury is more used by Girija's daughter. Why don't you see that? As soon as the King took over she sat at the back of a bike and crossed Sunauli border.
Have you all forgotten that?
Why do you think the King was a culprit? I don't know him personally but I respect him for his efforts of trying to build the nation. Everytime he gave a speech he asked these chutiya netas to join him in nation building, he asked them to take part in municipal elections and he repeatedly asked people to help him build the nation. He also kept repeating he only is asking for 3 yrs. What was wrong with that? I don't believe their roumours of the King asking them to give him a mine proof car or a even a plane which they have been spreading. He is more respectable than ever because I think he wanted to save the nation from Indian attack and gave up power to the same scoundrels. He saved the nation from bloodshed. Otherwise these scoundrels would have brought Indian army into the country. That had become almost inevitable.

my advice to the king and his family is to call it an era, pack up and leave the country before it is too late. My forecasts show that Mr. Gyane will be hanged if he does not listen to me. Needless to say, mr. pyar jung will not be spared

Episode Sikkim -2

BY PR PRADHAN

Viewing the fast developing political scenario in Nepal, one can recall the regional history 33 years ago. It is all but an open secret that India is always trying to fulfill her interests in Nepal. She attempted to bring Nepal into her security umbrella in the 1990s. When the then King Birendra refused India's proposal, the people's movement took momentum and India then moved to abolish Monarchy. The Indians were saying "ek dhakka aour mar" or give it one more push (and it will fall down). That time Indian strategy failed due to the visionary leadership of

the then King. Later, when the King became very popular, there was the Royal massacre on 1 June 2001, killing the King and his whole family. In Sikkim also, similar accident had occurred in which Prince of Sikkim was killed in a planned road accident. Indian army was mobilized dramatically into Sikkim, until then a sovereign mountain kingdom. Like here today, division was created between Chogyal and political forces and finally a referendum was announced in which Sikkim's Chogyal dynasty was abolished and Sikkim was peacefully annexed by India.

India has initiated the same 'design' against Nepal today.

REMOTE CONTROL DEMOCRACY

Isn't it interesting! Sitaram Yachuri pushes a button in New Delhi and SPA whizzes and gears into action, then SPA pushes a button and the parliament is set to motion and finally the cabinet takes "political" decision. The one after the other political decision has curtailed the King's remaining power and demoralized the Royal Nepal Army.

To recall, after the multiparty democracy in 1990, all institutions except Monarchy and RNA, were spoiled. Bureaucracy became defunct; police force became recruit centre of the political parties in power. RNAC, considered the landlocked country's link to the outside world, was making profit until the multiparty democracy, virtually collapsed. These are just some minor things to note, but the impact of such destructions is very worrisome for the existence of a nation.

India has understood the importance of the two remaining institutions that remained intact after 1990 - Monarchy and RNA. Now it is targeting these two knowing that if these two institutions can be brought down, the whole country would kneel before it.

PROLETARIAN DEMOCRACY & INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Until yesterday, the international community was censuring the King for taking up the Executive Power. The King, on his part, had tried to protect the country's sovereignty, people's freedom and multiparty democracy. The international community would perhaps be surprised to know that RNA had not been allowed to open fire even during the curfew. It is because the King didn't wish to kill the people. Police was allowed only to use teargas and rubber bullet. The King, respecting the people, not only handed over the executive power to the SPA, but also restored the erstwhile dissolved parliament. In fact, the parliament is existed on an ad-hoc basis as the people's mandate to the elected parliamentarians has already been expired and has been revived through the King's proclamation. Therefore, this parliament has no right to take any "revolutionary" decision. But, it is acting as if it has just come from the election with fresh mandate from the people, and it is posing itself as super parliament.

How has the international community taken the recent abnormalities appearing in the name of democracy? Are they satisfied with this "proletarian" style democracy and the SPA ruling by decree? Why are they keeping mum?

Sikkim 2- Nonsense!
Bhutan 2 - Nonsense!

Has Bineet been listening too much to Ramesh Nath Pandey or what, who played the China card and was at times anti-India too? It's not gonna work anymore. China and India have economic ties - and their economic interests have are increasingly overriding their old time enmities. Raising the spectre of Sikkimisation of Nepal is old hat. It's not gonna fool Nepali citizens anymore. Nepalis can take care of their country better than anyone, certainly better than the royal family and its private army, thank you!

----

well the palace is like a mafia family and the RNA (now Nepal Army) like their private army, so what can you do? the recent protest was about changing this exploitative set up, since both these entities are funded by people's taxes!

there is nothing wrong with the SPA trying to bring the RNA under the control of the PM. people have been paying for the support of RNA with their hard earned money, and the RNA should be held accountable / responsible to the people - not to the palace! This is standard practice everywhere in the world. This movement was not about reinstating " royal democracy" (competitive multiparty democracy and hereditary constitutional monarchy), this movement was about ushering "samabeshi loktantra" with the Constituent Assembly to decide on the fate of Monarchy. and Constituent Assembly is not just a Maoists' demand. Lest you forget, go back to 2007 B.S. and revisit Nepal's history and you will know it’d been a demand of Congress Party and also other parties then.

the failure of the 2046 movement was its failure to bring the army under the civilian control, so to speak. let's hope it succeeds this time.

lest royalists & reactionaries are quick to blame the political parties of corruption and what not, let me clarify that the abuse of power and misuse of money by the palace and its chamchas have made even the poster boys of corruption - Mr. Govinda Raj Joshi & Chiranjibi Kumar Wagles - look like saints with a “halo” around his head in comparision. Given the choice between anyone representing the palace and Mr. Govinda Raj Joshi, for instance, my vote will go to Mr. Govinda Raj Joshi each and every time. You want to know why?

This is because under "loktantra", eventually Mr. Govinda Raj Joshi cannot get away with corruption for very long. He will run out of luck sooner or later. He stands as an indicator of the maturity level of the democratic set up of Nepal. The instance he falls, we will know for certain that democracy is coming off age!

But under "constitutional monarchy", the palace's abuse of power or misuse of people's money is for eternity. As long as they are above the constitution, you cannot "bell the cat". They can even get away with murder, and allegedly have on more occasions than one.

It's not like the palace doesn't have lots of business stakes - with relative/absolute advantages over other private companies. They don’t have to pay custom duties - or income taxes. They have no business running a business empire (if they don’t want to play by market rules) and sucking up peoples' money at the SAME TIME. They have no business running National Parks & KMTNC on top of their business empire and people’s money. What could be more exploitative than this! This is fascism! This is greed run amuck! Which is why the stripped kings of India are offering their daughters to our Kingss sons or sons to the daughters of our top army brass? It’s a win win!

And yet when the palace sometimes preached about how free market economy or liberalising Nepali economy is good for Nepal, I have almost puked. You think these guys are for fostering competition. I think they are for killing off market competition, if any.

Ultimately what was wrong with the palace and the RNA was that they were intent on running Nepal like it was their own company, NEPAL INC - but with the hard earned money of the people. This was an out and out exploitative system - the worst elements of the feudalism combined with the worst elements of capitalism!

And the RNA was actually supporting this system! The Thapas/Basnyat/Ranas were being paid off handsomely to support this exploitative system with the guns, choppers, tanks, if need be.

The RNA is not without its problems. They are by and large composed of poor Nepali people – they have the kind of farmers’ face - and they have to wash clothes / cook foods /run errands for their masters. These soldiers’ salaries are paid by the people's money, yet they are told to protect the palace at the expense of the people. They are taught that ‘the people are their enemies”. What nonsense!

The top army brasses' sons (who are also in the army) are stationed safely in Kathmandu, whereas these poor RNA soldiers - intended sacrificial lambs - have to fight it out in the Maoist heartland. You think the RNA is what it's cracked out to be. Mind you, it is a private army of the palace. It will sacrifice as many soldiers (children of people) as it takes to strengthen the palace and the few top army brass.

You don't need evidence to prove how bad monarchy & rna have been. Our great great great parents have lived under their system and we've lived under their system as well. And if we don't watch out, our children and grand children are gonna get it even worse.

Orwell wrote: Imagine a boot pressing your face to the ground FOREVER. this is what has characterized autocratic monarchy and RNA ever since the royal coup.

The SPA declaration has declawed and defanged the palace, and I hope it will bring the army under the control of the people as soon as possible, even if it has to remove some top army brass. This declaration – the Nepali “magna carta – the outcome of the rhodendron revolution - is good for the people as well as for the poor Nepali army soldiers who have been exploited for too long.

The rule of a few over the majority is finally over. The USA and UK have supported the declaration. So has India. The sooner the top army brass gets this lesson, the better it is for all concerned.

If he did not asked his stupid son paras to create Royal massacre on June 01, 2001 or Jestha 19, our beloved Raja, Their Majesties the King Birendra Bir Bikram and Queen Airshya and their entire family, and if he is real patriotic Gyane Kalo Byapari, he could become As President of Nepal if Nepalese people want him. As Kishork Nepal says, he will have same position as Shahan shah did not get piece of land to bury his own death body in Tehraha.
