India’s Marshall Plan to control Nepal -Remain alert O! Yeh! Nepalese ! India is coming in a disguised way!

Thursday May 25 2006 17:42:00 PM BDT

Sudha, Nepal

AFTER the recent 19-day political movement in Nepal ended according to its roadmap thus bringing Nepal’s politics under its political umbrella, India has now announced an economic roadmap to also bring Nepal’s economy under its economic control that its was already there.

Within days of the political movement ending according to its will, India announced various projects for Nepal, and dubbed it as India’s Himalayan Marshal Plan. According to India watchers, New Delhi devised the Marshal Plan for Nepal feeling ‘sorry’ for the plight of the Nepalese and its brethren in Nepal. The plan is said to be the brainchild of the troika appointed by Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh—special envoy of the Indian government Dr. Karan Singh, Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran and India’s National Security Adviser MK Naravanan. The troika have already approved the plan from the Indian prime minister.

Under the plan India is willing to spend as much as Rs. 12 billion in Nepal. This is a completely different plan from the regular Indian assistance. India is defending its Nepal plan arguing as democratic polity cannot sustain without economic development, India has realized its responsibility towards Nepal to sustain and stabilize democratic system in Nepal. But this has again proved India’s evil intention of undermining or even taking over Nepalese sovereignty by working to make the Nepalese people’s aspiration for democracy in its favour. After it has succeeded in treading the political parties and even the king to walk on its roadmap, India does not want the people’s opinion to go against it. What India wants is to make all - the political parties, king and the people in Nepal - to dance to its tunes.

The façade of India’s Himalayan Marshal Plan looks pretty attractive. Those who have got the hint of the plan said it includes building east-west railway, expansion of postal roads, linking all districts, which do not have road access, in the road network, construction of oil pipeline from Barelli to Kathmandu through Amlekhgunj and providing Nepal with cash and loan to reduce Nepal’s trade deficit with India.

But if one looks at the real intention of the announcement of the plan without consulting Nepal and its publicity of early implementation, it is clear that India is not even treating Nepal as its State, but putting Nepal at even lower rank—its center administered areas. But it is an irony and paradox that nobody here is giving much of a thought to the Indian propaganda and publicity.

If one looks at the past Indian ventures in Nepal such as the Koshi and Gandaki projects, Tribhuvan and Siddhartha Highways, Industrial Estate and airport in Rajbiraj all Indian projects in Nepal have either failed altogether or have become white elephants or are more bothersome than boons. Those who have worked in Indian-made projects or have looked into those projects say that the newly announced projects will not be different from the earlier doomed projects.

Already planners here say several projects, announced by India such as the Bir Hospital expansion project, Dolalghat-Dhankuta Road project and expansion of Janakpur-Jayanagar Railway, could remain on paper and in announcements only.

Nonetheless India has succeeded its political roadmap in Nepal and is now on the second phase of pushing its economic roadmap to bring Nepal completely under its economic and political control. But even if the political parties have surrendered themselves and the King has cowed down before India, India’s domination, the so called will not be acceptable to the Nepalese, who are true nationalist. Nepalese people will come out and oppose India’s new hegemonic face under the guise of a new democratic nation, which it is not in effect.

Amrit Joshi;
Interesting article to read! But I have few conflicting questions to be answered.
From when is Nepal self reliant?
How could Nepal do itself away from India?
What is the future perspectives of nepalese economy when the state is not directed to economic reforms?
How could we remain globally competant with other nations when we ourselves cannot decide the fate of our nation?
Nepal has 90% trade with India.... how could we not accept its terms?
India is an emerging global market.... we should make the best use of it.. but how?
Himalayan Marshal Plan is for the development of Nepal.... I am sure India have other hidden incentives.... how could Nepal depend on itself... if not taking Aids from others?
Nepal economy and even our prime-ministers fund is allocated by foreign aid.... I hope we realize that?
Any Comments?

Nepal lies between the two emerging global powers. We could have used this to our benefit by being a transit point. But does India really has a genuine interest in the well-being of Nepal? For example, at the wake of the software revolution, when Nepal was also preparing to grasp its share by being one of the first south asian nation to start building the silicon valley (in Banepa), due to the intervention of India and with consent of Nepali politicians, the project got sacked, though the building was already erected. As long as our politicians are non-patriotic and corrput, no one can save Nepal.

I agree with you Harkey. I know about that. But why don't so many Nepalese understand it? They just blame the King for trying to straighten out things... all he was doing was trying to improve things.

There you come again Bineet, take my word your days are over.. go.. learn to move along.

Harkey dear, silicon valley is not name of a city, or some project, you need a lot of brain and infrastructure for it.. man you just made a billion dollar project in couple of words, must be something like KP bhattari's word that he is gonna shower with water, make ktm like singapore. Easier said than done. Have you visited the silicon city near Hyderabad? Man its just not somebody said, we are trying to build a silicon valley in Nepal, its not so easy, where is the infrastructure? where is the manpower?

Rest bout the Indian Himalayan Marshal , I do believe we need to suspect india for all its 'Desi Mentality' I know how India can decieve (looking from its past). But hey whats worng in listening to what it wants to offer and in return of what? I know the people in the center like Manmohan singh would not want to add one more headache to its list. and above all Nepal has been a lot of headache to india due to immigration, and other geopolitical issues. India wants to make nepal not rich but just 'Self Sufficient' so that it wants to deal with other issues. India in the last decade has gained such momentum that the mere influence in nepal 'So CONSIDERED BY NEPALESE AS A GREAT POLICY' merely is matter of no importance. It is a Global Super power, it does not want to make its image bad by having a failed state by its side. Just take it as if you become a millionare then you would obviously throw a shirt or two at your dying neighbour. Just to make hood look good in front of others.

I believe its not more than throwing a shirt at your dying neighbour. India has gone into such pace that issues like Nepal no longer interests it. It just wants to make nepal self suffieient such that it will now have to bear any headaches for such petty matters. I though being ashame of the same.

I would prefer to see what india has to offer because 20 billion dollars just to build the infrastructure is not a joke for nepal. We nepalese are just Loud, no brains, coz had we had brains we would not have been struggling till now, we would have done atleast something rather than pull each other's leg or criticize the two super powers beside us, ourselves being the poorest coountry in the world.

Jai hos

Ghopachee dear,
Bangalore wasn't built in one day. I am not talking about today. At least I made a billion dollar word rather than your priceless response without understanding the thread. Go and see Bangalore or Hyderabad 15 years ago and tell me how sophisticated Silicon Valleys they were then. I am talking about the time when even the Y2K revolution didn't occur. The Banepa project was about to launch alongwith contemporary infrastructures in the neighboring countries. "where is the infrastructure? where is the manpower?" you asked. Well, if the project was dumped before it started, how can you expect to see the manpower and infrastructure. What a redundant question.
"We nepalese are just Loud, no brains, coz had we had brains we would not have been struggling till now, we would have done atleast something rather than pull each other's leg or criticize the two super powers beside us, ourselves being the poorest coountry in the world. " There you go, spoke for yourself. Nobody has been criticising China's policy towards Nepal.

Harkey, my dear harkey,

what silicon valley project you are talking about? do you even have a slightest idea of what a silicon valley is? okay define your sillicon valley and let me know how was it planned in Nepal? I just want a headsup so that I can argue with you why it would not have been possible in Nepal why was it just a myth. I just want to make sure I am discussing with a knowledgible person.

Okay Ghopachhee, you are the one with entire knowledge about Silicon Valley and working at Sun Microsystems. I don't want to waste my time here trying to prove my knowledge worth with someone who even don't have a slightest idea about the project in Banepa. If you don't know the definition of Silicon Valley go and search in google, no need to ask me. You said you want to argue with me. Well I am here to discuss rather than argue. By the way, your nickname itself suggests your level of thinking.
