Hello People

I need some advice as i am going back to Nepal after 10 years and have no clue what to expect. Please help me by answering these questions
1. Can we take digital camera as gift and not get taxed? Will they make us write in our passports? or can we give them couple of dollars and patau them?

2. I have a 20 month old daughter, do i need to give her typhoid shots when we go there?

3.Have you given malaria tablets to your toddler? Is there any side affects? Is it necessary to give them the malaria medication?

4. How much money should we take. Can we use our credit cards or debit cards?

I would really appreicate any tips that you can give.

Thanks in advance

1. One digital camera ( or 2 if you can hide somewhere should not be a problem) whether it is as a gift or ...Depends upon time and persons. Some had no trouble while taking video camera and digital camera while some had. Sometime few bucks help. Honestly no good idea though.
2. Try to comply with health requirements while you are back here too. Do not knwo abt ohers.
4. Most of the time, you are not checked at Airport for money unless you are not a Nepali Citizen. Still advised not to take more than $10000.

1. Digital camera is allowed 1 per person. It can be written in passport if you are taking it back with you. Since it is gift, you need to pay tax if more than 1.
2. I took my daughter when she was 6 months and 4 years...no special shots were recommended when I asked the doctor. Flu shot is sometimes a good idea depending on season.
3. NO. I don't think so. Just keep the bug spray around that contains deet.
4. Yes you can use your debit cards to withdraw cash. The fee was around $3-$5 per withdrawl. Credit cards are accepted at big restaurants, grocery stores etc.

You have a great trip!

Nepali notes, saye saye ko atleast 8 to 10.
Otherwise you'll end up paying your hard earned dollars to the khatey bhansar officers at airport. If u haven't arranged your pickup, you'll need it for the taxi too.

I do not advise u to take camera to Nepal. You'll find it cheaper there. If you are planning to buy one, buy it from Nepal instead.

Electronics laney ho bhaney BOSE justo big brand speakers & amp lagey hunchha, no bhansar for speakers. If you don't like it, you can get good money for it in Nepal.Budha budhi ley ek ek set speaker lagyo bhaney at least ek jana ko ticket expenses uthchha.

just make sure you give those bastards some Dollars.......$50 dollars would be fine.
after all these bastards are only after the money.

whenever i go to nepal, ktm airport is the worst airport in the world. 21st ecntury and going to 22nd century and still no computerized system lah.
and when they find out you come from USA or other western country they are syre to loot you............
many immigration officers are lootekukur....................only know how to loot you of your money.

Chameli what do you mean you would be culture shock? are you not a npali?
were you born in nepali or born in usa.? were you raised in nepal or usa?
just because u live in usa dosen't mean you have to be culture shock when you visit nepal. you are being rude to nepal and nepali.

Digital camera as a gift sounds good idea.

Tyroid Shots- no need as our "Aayo Noon" is full of iodine. Don't worry, govenment has at least take care of "GOITER" agenda for the time being.

Malaria tablets to toddler sounds invalid as mosquitoes become resistant to anti malaria drugs, so no effect on those recombinant mosquitoes of Nepal. Rather you should buy mosquito nets there for which you need enough fund to cover your travel and living expenses.

Money- Bhanincha Sunako thailaa haatha ka maila- it depends! If you are travelling with a family then think about it. Try not to carry cash with you, esp US Dollars. Debit card works perfectly fine in any ATM machine (I only have experience within Kathmandu, not sure about the out of valley).

Last but not the least, enjoy your Trip Chameli number 2.

Sorry born free ji, i did not mean to offend Nepal and Nepali by saying culture shock. What i meant was being back after so long and not being used to all the hustle and bustle active life of Nepal, would surely make me a pakhey for a while. It would take me a couple of days to get used to the old environment. I am sure everyone feels the same. Somebody was saying that when they reached Nepal, they felt that all the people were so small as you get used to seeing such big people here. I meant stuff like that, so please don't take it otherwise.

Debit cards.... will there be any fee for using the ATM?

Thanks for the tips guys.

alright Chameli ji..............have a good and enjoyable time in nepal.
as i said before..................try to have some nepali rupess in your wallet.
at the airport, those dogs would try to make your life difficult. they would say "what did you bring"? show it to us?
and most of the time, they want you to give them a some cash.
those dogs would say............." chiya (tea) kanay poicha payeah ramro hun thiyo"
sorry ....my nepali sux k.
so it's good if you have some nepali currency in your wallet.
also it would be good if your parents or some relatives come and pick you up at the departure/arrival car park . this way you would not have problem with so many taxi drivers and other guys jostling for you once you step out of the into the carpark.

i recommend you go to Nargarkot Chameli. i miss that place soooooooooo much.

alrigh take care

Last year, I took one digital camera and one movie camera. They did not ask even for a penny. Hoever, one lathait continued to roam around me and constantly asked me if I had any problem in the airport.

You will experience one thing over there: After getting off from the plane, they will put 80 people in a bus with 30 people capacity and take you to the terminal which is about a minute far by walk. Fill out a form, submit it, claim your luggages and go out straight . this is not a flu season, so i think there is no need to vaccinate your baby.
