Swiss-style Federal System Sought In Nepal

THT Online
Kathmandu, July 2

Limbu experts on Saturday said that Nepal should adopt the Switzerland style of federal system but not the type of "partial federal system" as in India.
"Nepal should go for a federal system with the right to self determination like that of Switzerland," said Kumar Limbu presenting a concept paper on "Autonomous State of Limbuwan in the Federal Structure" at a seminar organised by Limbu Students Forum (LSF).
Limbu said precious cultures of the Nepali indigenous nationalities have gradually become extinct, as they could not express their feelings due to the "domination of Hindu culture in the nation."
"During the Panchayat era, the Limbu language was banned but the language was made optional even during the multiparty democratic system," he said.
He further said autonomous regions are essential to save one's language in this age.
President of Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities Students, Chandra Bikram Rai, said the Limbus and the Kirats should unite to fight for the autonomous region and federal system.
He said the latest development after the change in the political scenario has showed that the April revolution has benefited only the Brahmins and Chhettris of the nation. "Now, it's the time of all other disadvantaged groups to begin another decisive revolution to establish their rights," he said.
Former president of LSF Suvash Palunga said the Limbu students should make all Limbu people aware of their rights and fight to establish their autonomous region with self-discrimination.
