people now world cup is over and winner has been decided, people are beginning to make great Zidane a scapegoat. But why?
Isn't he have done so much to France team as well as to football world and communities.
and just because this is Zidane last game and he has to deserve red-card dosen't mean
it was Z.Z fault that France lost.
Anybody who thinks that it was due to ZZ that France lost is a loser.

Give him respect people

timi haru je sukai bhana..the best player to come out of this tournament for me is France's Ribery. I hope the speculation of him joining Arsenal is true. Ribery along with Henry in the Arsenal team would be a great duo. He will prove to be a fine replacement for Robert Pires.

An interesting read :

World-Zidane's red card was just, butt broke rules?

By Mitch Phillips

BERLIN, July 9 (Reuters) - The most memorable moment of the World Cup final, Zinedine Zidane's butt to the chest of Italian defender Marco Materazzi, was rightly punished by a red card even though the officials did not appear to see it happen.

The incident in the second period of extra time brought a premature end to the great midfielder's career and he can have no complaints about the justice of it.

He might, however, have cause to question its legality as it is against FIFA rules for TV pictures to be used as a basis for a refereeing decision.

Zidane had been an ever-increasing influence in the match, in which he opened the scoring with a penalty in the seventh minute and almost won with a wonderful header in the 104th only to be denied by Gianluigi Buffon.

Then, after a French attack broke down early in the second period Zidane trotted back from the Italian area exchanging comments with Materazzi.

Something the Italian said obviously hit a raw nerve as Zidane stopped, walked back towards him and landed a fierce butt on his chest.

Materazzi collapsed, Zidane continued on his way and the game continued. It had not gone completely unseen, however as several Italian players, with Buffon the most vociferous, approached the nearest linesman demanding action.

Replays were shown on the hundreds of televisions in the media seats, raising an audible gasp.

As the mayhem continued on the pitch Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo consulted his linesmen and, so it was later discovered, the fourth and fifth officials, who have access to TV but may have seen the incident live.

The result was the red card and Zidane, who was also sent off for stamping during the 1998 World Cup, walked away from football for ever.

Both coaches confirmed that the decision had been taken by the off-pitch officials, both Spaniards, but each coach took a different view on what that meant.

"It was not Materazzi who got the attention of the referee, it was the fourth and fifth officials who pointed out what happened," said Italy's Marcello Lippi.

"The French spectators didn't know what happened, they'll know when they read the newspapers tomorrow."

France's Raymond Domenech said: "The referee saw nothing, the assistant referee saw nothing and then we have the fourth official saying to the referee what happened.

"We have video in football and then the fourth official tips off the referee."

France striker Thierry Henry said: "If they want to use video evidence it's not for one incident, they should use it for everybody and they should look at Materazzi too."

Nobody in the French camp was saying what passed between the two players but David Trezeguet said: "Zidane can leave here with his head held high. There is more than football in life."

Materazzi refused to talk about the incident

Finally i, who expected Italy's win and that is what happened, realized that I must be sorry for Zidane. I used some bad words to portrayed him. But,

Zidane should not have reacted that way to that very Italian who equalized the scores and shattered Zidane's hope of finalizing the match within regular 90 minutes, even if Materazzi scold or said some racist words. But, by the time he did that, Zidane was already hopeless about winnig the match because Viera and Henry were not on the pitch, and because he might have already realized that penalty was not for French.

Bad day for Zidane and for French supporters though they equally deserved the trophy!!

Yes, I will have to agree with Orange Boy.
In a game where tensions are high, it is easy to react on your emotions. And that is what happened with Zidane. The Italian player did everything to provoke him. He tweaked his nipples while holding him with both hands. Then passed on some comments, which I won't doubt could have been racial, knowing the Italians and Spaniards.
Zidane still should have controlled himself, but what seems clear is that this refree seems to have no mind of his own. He refreed the match between England and Portugal and apparently his decision to red card rooney was ignited by Potrugese players. And same happened here. He didn't see the head-butt, neither did his assistants. But then the Italian players seems to have influenced his decision, once again.

Italy winning today in penalties today and David Trezeguet missing the penalty just goes to prove that the everything moves in circles and that what goes around comes around. David Trezeguet was the one who shattered Italian dreams and broke the hearts of many Italian fans including mine by hitting the golden goal 6 years ago in the 2000 Euro final. It was a good victory for the Italians, who deserved to win the world cup after beating Germany in undoubtedly one of the best matches I have seen.

However, the way Zidane had to exit from International football was very sad. Its sad how a sudden rush of blood to the head will marr an otherwise glorious career forever.
But still, Zizou you rock!!

okay, i am not supporting the great zidane here for his what one may call a "stupid" act. we all know how great a player he is. after maradona, if anyone had me in awe in terms of skill and prowess, it has to be zidane.

i have nothing against the refrees decision. but just a food for thought. we all know that fifa is quite stringent when it comes to physical abuse, but what about verbal? i mean okay there are cameras all around to capture what's going around. the replay clearly showed that he had a small encounter(not a huge issue in soccer these days) with materazzi , then he was on his way. then all of a sudden he comes back and hit him. i m dead sure that there must have been a crude verbal exhange. now the question is who is keeping track of that? i mean okay one cannot be violent physically because it can be captured but what about the verbal abuse???? is it not against the spirit of the game?

to me, if zidane deserved a red card then so did materazzi. but then they did not have evidences of the verbal brawl. shame on fifa!!

Loote

If you have seen video its not because of pinching zidane got furious. because after matarazzi pinched him zidane smiled and went away. later matrazi said something and came back and hit him.

what zidane did was abosoultely unjustifiable. matrazi didnt deserve a card unless they seem physically meancing because verbal abuse is very common. zidane won the best player of the tournament. He got 2012 votes second place cannavaro got 1977 and third place pirlo got 715 points. After that incidenct wether he deserved that can be a case of argument.

Italy deserved to win this world cup because no team in this tournament scored a proper goal against them. one was an own goal and other was penalty which shouldnot have been granted (even former world cup winning 1998 french player marsaile desaily said that ) if you cant score against a team you dont deserve to win. Germany the best socrer of the tounament struggled to score against italy so you cant blame other team for not scoring.

Zidane deserves to be Man of the tournament. He took his team to final which was very unexpected.
About the abuses..
Camera and 4th umpire should not be part of the game. There have been so many fouls in the game that deserved red cards but refree did not see it So, if we use camera for deciding issues then it should be part of FIFA regulations.
Zindane did not display good sportsmanship in that game but we know how italians are when it comes to cheapness and using verbal abuses.

the decision of zidane wasnot taken after seeing video replay. here is the link if you dont believe.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/teams/france/5164616.stm

and stop supporting zidane. nomatter whatever has been said against zidane doesnot justify what he did. and this verbal exchages are common in football. Even italian goalkeeper said zidane made serious comment on him after he blocked the heading. if you dont believe just go to bbc website and see zidane literally shouting at buffon.

verba argy-bargy is part and parcel of the game. but what is in explicable is how zidane reacted.

Well well, we should learn not to make Gods out ot Men. Man makes mistakes. And Zidane made one.
But few months or years down the road, he will still be remembered as one of the greatest football players, and as an ordinary man who carved his way up to the top.
But this event will haunt Matarazzi more than Zidane. What Matarazzi did or said was not to any one but to the greatest player of modern times who was playing his last game. To pass cheap slurs to provoke him and rob him out of an opportunity to bid farewell in a better way will make Matarazzi the biggest cheater in football.

can you tell me what matarazzi said.

well zidane said offensive words to buffon after his header was stopped. you can check the video. you can see zidane literally shouting. buffon has certified that . zidane was litereally frustrated by italian defence and that was shown in his behaviour.

i read on bbc blog, one commentator said ZIDANE INCIDENT WAS TO MAKE SURE MATARAZZI NEVER PLAYS FOOTBALL AGAIN. if you are trying to defend that piece of s**i you are biggest looser.

Hahahaha, so my theory that you are a devout follower of British media proved true.
So no surprise to see why you hate Portugese team so much and mainly C.Ronaldo.
Get a life you sheep.

hurray .are you trying to defend zidanes incident by saying british media. why british media are wrong ?? why is bbc most watch television in whe world?? why have bbc reached even villages on nepal where. what have british against zidane. why should they write anything against him . you read a german newspaper and you will see zidane booing.

hurray you are nothing mroe than a french supporter who lost.who is crying on thier lost. you have problem in admiting itlains are better. you never said french got lucky penalty. it should have never got to extratime. why would you say you are a french losser.
as far as chistiano ronaldo is concerned i have never complaied about him provoking refree to give red card to rooney because ronney deserves that. i have complained about his jumping and diving and making faces as if somebody really pushed him everytime to a redicioulous degree.

Don't even go about saying France did not deserve the penalty. Do you not remember another foul inside the bix toward 57th minutes which should have been a penalty but the ref did not give it.
Anyway, I don't make excuses like you.

Verbal abuses are common from both sides in such a competitive match like that, I guess. What I think is that something else caused Zidane doing such act:

Zidnae, realizing that Italian defence is almost impossible to break, was already hopeless of scoring any more in the extra time. He already knew that it is harder to beat Buffon on the penalty shootout. Hopeless hopeless hopeless.

and Materazzi was the one who equalized the scores and shattered French and Zidane's hope of wining in regular time, so Zidane got mad when he found that he just dealt with the very guy, then went ahead to head-butt Materazzi.

My conclusion:
French played exciting, they entertained the audiences as much as they could yesterday. On the other hand, Italian presented so defensive yesterday unlike previous matches. French really deserved the trophy for their wonderful play against Italy, however, it's soccer and the best team does not always win. Congratulations, Azzuris!!
