New Delhi to Kathmandu in seven days; 'Nepal Chetna Yatra' flagged off

BY SURENDRA PHUYAL

NEW DELHI, July 20 - As the friend of Nepal's democratic movement former Indian prime minister Chandra Shekhar relaxed in his New Delhi residence on the drizzling July morning, an Indian multi-party delegation Thursday embarked on a unique mission to convey Mahatma Gandhi's message of peace and non violence to Nepal.

Led by Nationalist Congress Party General Secretary, D.P. Tripathi, who also runs a thinktank organization called 'Bichar-Nyash', the eight-member delegation left New Delhi at 11 a.m. Thursday. The road procession will take them to Kathmandu next Thursday - via Lucknow, Benaras, Patna, Vegu Sarai, Siliguri and Kakadbhitta border.

Dubbed 'Nepal Chetana Yatra', the unique road mission from New Delhi to Kathmandu was flagged off outside veteran leader Chandra Shekhar's 3, South Avenue Lane residence here by Janata Dal United {JD (U)} leader Sharad Yadav and Rastriya Lok Dal leader Ajith Singh.

Veteran leader Chandra Shekhar, 79, could not come out of his house, owing to his poor health condition. But Tripathi said the initiative has blessings from Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

"We are embarking on this unique Yatra to extend our solidarity to Nepal's return to democracy and consolidate our unique relations," Tripathi said before the eight leaders were whisked away by three colorfully decorated SUVs (sports utility vehicles), which will cover a distance of approximately 1,600 kilometers.

The automotive 'Yatra' - other members in which include Congress leader Mohan Prakash, BJP's Pankaj Choudhary and socialist leaders Kamal Morarkia and Ravindra Manchanda - will enter Nepal via Siliguri-Kakadbhitta on Tuesday, July 25. On Wednesday, the Indian leaders are to attend receptions in Jhapa and Chitwan.

On Thursday, the delegates are to present a special memento to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, underscoring the civilizational ties between the two South Asian neighbors. Before flagging it off, JD(U) leader Yadav pledged India's continued support to Nepal and hoped that the 'Yatra' would further strengthen the friendship between the two neighbors.

Political activists gathered at the ceremony chanted slogans in favor of historic Nepal-India unity. And the banner prominently displayed on the side of one of the SUVs read, "Gandhi's road [of peace and non violence] for Nepal." The initiative, analysts here say, should bolster the peace and reconciliation, and the democratization processes that have restarted in Nepal after the April uprising.
