hey guys...which is the best the school/college in Nepal. Lets rank 3 of them.
Let me start first

1. Rato Bangala School
2. Budanilkantha School
3. Malpi Institute

I think these schools are at the top now. Disagree with me, then lets see what others have to say

Bhunte,

I got to cry! Sachchai runa man lagyo!
Although it was not that remote as Karnali, I had been through that situation in my primary school! At my 4, I walked all the way along the edge of a sharp hill and got KA, KHA, GA..Can you imagine the boy at 4 travelled 5 km to go and 5 to come everyday just for KA, KHA, GA? No one in Sajha has been through such situation. ....

You made me cry, Bhunte!

All sentimentalities and fatalistic "ke garne" tendencies aside, if one is to rank the schools of Nepal, two things need to be in place:

1. A non-partition body, be it governmental or newspaper affiliated or some civil society, who has sufficient credentials and credibility to do an objective study in this field.

2. Number of verifiable criteria and transparent methodology to rank the schools.

A good place to start would be to research how US News does its ranking of academic institutions in the US; however, by itself, that would not be sufficient as Nepali situation, culture and other variables need to be taken into account.

This exercise might be beneficial to Nepali society as a whole; as this could provide a general guideline and standard on better education. Furthermore, this will create a healthy competition among schools, which can only benefit the students.

What will not work:

Ranking by SLC results obviously is flawed. It is a good thing that they removed the stupid board 1-10 ranking.

Ranking by who shouts the most and loudest here at Sajha is even more flawed ;-) I could yell from the top of my roof till I turn blue that BKS is the best school in Nepal, but we all know guys from StX won't give a crap about that, much less agree.

Because school cost more and exclusively cater to rich and powerful of Kathmandu does not mean a thing. While Rato Bangala and Malpi might be good schools by other measures, just going by the fact that the tuition there is 10 times more than Nepal's per capita income and that they have 1 seat for 20 applicants is a non-starter.

In the end, lot depends on the students too.

A friend of mine, from relatively poor family, went to Paropakar school near Bishnumati, attended Ascol, did his Bachelors in India, later got his Doctorate from a Canadian university and now works as a scientist in a cutting edge field of renewable enegy in the US. Very successful to say the least.

Similarly, another friend of mine, from well to do family in Kathmandu, went to one of the elite schools in Kathmandu, then went to another elite school in the US - Harvard, to be exact, did not get any job in the US, so returned to Nepal, and is now making a so so living.

Not that I am saying latter is any less than former, but anybody can see that the success level of the two is not the same.

Anyway, to stop this rambling, yeah, ranking the schools is a good idea, but it should be done in a systematic way.

Adios!

Bhunte, sacchai, my eyes welled up. That is the reality of Nepal. I don't know. I don't think it is that sad, but I could not help it. Perhpas the photos reminded me how difficult life is in rural Nepal and children bore most of the burden of it.

I feel the school I studied Tarun Madhyamik Vidhyalaya at Balaju Kathmandu the best. Being a fully government school it have option to study in both Nepali and English medium. Lately, the SLC results are very very good and the products of the school are top rated. Most importantly its so cheap as its government school, but remind you most of the time you need political jack or be extra ordinary to get admitted.

Three best schools.. hahaha.... lMy school is the best. It was in a rural village in western Nepal. What are you guys talking about BudhaNilakantha, Xviers-Xmarys like those schools. Did they ever teach you the history/culture of Nepal. Do you guys know what " beyauti" means. Did they ever teach you what Real Nepal is? All we got from them is the idea how to get out from the country for the sake of your PAPI PET. So those schools would be the best for you and your families but they are but not for the nation at all.
I went to a school in a village where even english was taught in Nepali, one teacher would teach math, science and optional math. I still remember the moments that the school was running out of chalk.

Do you still dare to compare my school with the elite classes schools?

Riten,
All i would say is how do you major success?

meaning one is working in cutting edge technology makes him successful and the other went back home.. [ what ever ] reason makes him unsuccessful???

common.. staying abroad and working does not make you successful. making $$ and having a job does not make u successful..

just my thought.

if both of them are happy with what they are doing then they are both successful. the person with the job and $$ can be unhappy thus is unsuccessful......

rajaharishchandra jyu,
"beyauti" accutally it is "byauti" and fyi, it is the kurauni made from the milk when a new baby is born. or to be precise pahilo ghada ko dhudh bata banakeko kurauni. Did i say it right?

now when u talk about culture and what else. it depends on ur family NOT UR SCHOOL. SCHOOL CAN NOT TEACH U ALL.

i think i might be little unclear in my explanation

"gai/bhaisi or even manche ko .. milking from the mom is after the baby is born. so they take this first lot of milk and use it to make kurauni which is call byauti".....

when i say new born baby i meant the milk is from the pregnent lady [ cow/bhaisi or any female animal or human]

I did not mean to categorize or put human in the same as animal. neither i am trying to put anybody down...

as always what do i know (O:

My sense is that Riten -- whoever s/he is -- anonymously appears to be making stuff up, and passing them off as some sort of truth.

S/he calls for objective measures, yet easily succumbs to the same highly
subjective judgements that s/he accuses others of falling into.

If not, then, let Riten -- the arbiter of who's a success and who's not -- name
names so that interested third-parties can judge for themselves the validity of
Riten's judgments.

I say that because I personally know many Harvard grads who live and work in Nepal (or, for that matter, in various parts of South Asia, or, at least the ones active in
local Harvard clubs).

Based on my limited but interested experiences, I have yet to come across Harvard grads who returned to their countries -- whether Nepal, Bangladesh, India or Pakistan - to live merely as "so so" or after having failed to secure jobs in the US.

Often, many of these people are driven and hardworking enough to rise up to be
in influential positions in their home countries: in academia, business, civil society, journalism, diplomacy, government service, and so on. You go to India, for instance, and meet some of these people, and the only reaction is: "Wow!"

On a larger note, people return -- from Harvard or from Quincy College -- to their countries for a variety of reasons: personal, family, end of a fellowship/scholarship stay, and so on. It's typically old-fashioned to equate 'return to Nepal' as some
sort of a failure.

As they say, on the banks of the Charles River, the further you go away from Cambridge with your degree, the impact gets bigger! :-)

Driven, ambitious and hardworking Nepalis -- regardless of where they go to school anywhere on the planet -- make the best of what they have wherever they choose to live and work.

I have no reservations against the good named and famed schools whatever few may be out there. Ultimately our efforts should be to bring disproportionate numbers of schools across nations toward thier level. Probably it is still not time to compare among schools when there exists utter asymmetry to the access of public finance and educational resources. There is so much heterogeniety skewness that a meaningful comparison may be only by grouping schools, such as by private, public, or regional, etc.

As some members ( i believe they are also the sufferers of education policy in Nepal in the past!!!) here expressed that their eyes were welled up or made them cry, and that is still the reality of the country. A number of schools still lack physical infrasturctures, te achers/teaching resources, and many drops out of school due to affordability and various other reasons. The decade long conflict has aggravated the situation and it is a further setback for the country. The country in itself is not poor but was made poor by myopic vision of "handfools" in the past. There is a whole lot to write but i leave this issue open for further discussions.

Thapap, you spoke my mind...

Riten,
how do you measure "success"? success might have different connotations. the meter that you keep to measure it might be useless or even absurd to a person who has different definition of success in his dictionary.

coming to the question put forth by the thread, to be really honest, the ranking system never appealed me personally. not because i don't go to havard but because it does NOT always guarantee success of the individual (again, "success" might have different meanings for different individuals).

just to clarify my point a bit, i have had gotten a chance to work with graduates from MIT and Stanford, and my experience with them tells me that its not the school name but the individual's aptitude and attitude that make a difference. i am NOT saying the ranking method is completely foul and/or MIT and Standford are no good.

I see Ranking of schools a totally flawed notion in Nepal. By any methodology you rank, you will be creating discriminations and most probably the humuliations among the students who study somewhere in Solukhumbu or Rukum Government school. He knows that his school can not be among those top 10 schools and the advertisements that come in media from those expensive schools may deter him even to study. It's not time to rank the institutions in this stage because in Nepal, almost everything is in wrecked state coz of civil war except few institutions in kathmandu and in some major cities.
We have to think at this stage is empowerment of schools. Sending sufficient teachers there, extra academic stuffs in schools to make students at least to encourage him to study and sufficient grants from primary level is the need of the hour. We know that Xt. Xavier is of course better than any shanti or kanti or whatever Madhyamik Vidhyalaya og Myagd or Dhading, then why should we humuiliate others and make ad of such rankings.

In some other thread, Ashu Complains about Avi Subedi's understanding of Ignetief or someone similar, I am not so intellectual, but I think Amartya Sen's Capability approach should work here and if we take that line of make everyone capable upto the minimum level or upto minimum standard of education, then, only we can think about rankings---who is best?
Otherwise, these all are market driven cheap propaganda and most of the time funded by those institutions who name appear in top 10 list.

I think Amar Adrasha High School located at Purano Baneshwor, Birendra Sainik at Sallaghari Bhaktapur are the top schools in Nepal.
