if he manages to pull himself out of the nightmare that he sees every night about he and congress NOT succeeding without king and monarchy, then i would say he has a better chance to become a better politician than he is now.

Well! as a true nepali to the heart and a humanist, I am neither looking for 'the best politician' nor 'the most successful one'. All we need is a 'Consummate Statesman' who can take a good peek into the future and devise a strategy for the country to make the most of it when the time arrives. Just like Lincoln a great statesman himself said "I never had a policy; I have just tried to do my very best each and every day". Politicians of today are more concerned with how their stance in a given issue will affect the next election results. As someone rightly said A self-deprecating comment by one politician goes like "Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river. "

If G P Koirala solves the Maoist problems, he will be regarded as the most successful & influential Nepalese Politician of all time by not only Nepalese People (regardless his past) but also by World.

GP going againts peoples' interest. He still has time to fix it. Negotiate with Maoist with soft corner and move againts monarchy rule. Monarchy system is supposed to be the pride symbol of the country but in Nepal it turned out to be the autocratic.

I agree.. regardless of his past if he is able to solve the maoist problem, he will be recognized as a great leader in the country's history.

Right now he seems to be the one balancing both the royals and the maoists. If he solves the Maoists issue, he will be considered as a leader who at least solved the problem he himself created. But if he dies soon before solving this issue, Nepal is going to fall apart and get into civil war which would be worse that what we have seen so far.

If we look at Girija's past, he should have long been disappeared from Nepali politics. Yet, he isn't going anywhere soon because others are worse than him. I believe he understands that trying to solve the current problems in right way is better than doing stupid things to get wah-wahs. He is really trying to balance things up. As a leader of Nepali Congress, he is trying his best to protect his party. I don't think he gives rat's ass about monarchy that troubled him through out his political career. He is more concerned about his party. He knows very well that he is surrounded by communists, some with arms and others without. We keep talking about seven-party-alliance but if we take a closer look, it's communists vs. Nepali congress. Also, he has proved time and again that he is against active monarchy. Perhaps he knows that constitutional monarchy is essential for his party's survival. Majority of people are very emotional and fate of the monarchy would have been a done deal by now had Girija not opposed to communists. But, the question is how many seats his party would secure in election against the united communists? To me, that's a lot of pressure at that age.

Like Homlal said, Girija knows that he is surrounded by communists most of them armed like vultures and any sign of weakness will bring his end. He also knows that the army is still very loyal to the king no matter what the king's political status is right now. He knows that once the king is gone, these political parties are nothing for the Maoists to get rid of. They will easily be sidelined. And to protect his own party, Girija has shown support to the monarch. Besides, he is also the most well known or rather respected nepali leader for Indian politicians. No matter how much suck up he may look in front of the Indians, it is quite obvious that given nepal's geopolitical situation she cannot economically sustain without good relationship with India. And this is the bitter truth. And for this fact also, the Maoists have not been able to kick Girija around. But the question to ponder is, what will happen once Girija dies and Maoists problem is not yet resolved. Will there again be a power struggle between the Maoists and the Palace? And will we can see no peace for a long time before India comes in to rescue us as we seem incapable to resolve our own problems?
