What are the books by Nepali authors written/translated in English. Have read Samrat Upadhaya, have heard of Manjushree Thapa. MK Limbu's Fragile Mountains. Who else?

Advice/ suggestions/ opinions would help!

fictitious 'oopanyas' = Book? I think Book contains something substantial, fact based, research based, etc. While SU's are novels, but MST's one are both book and novel. To name few, check Mahendra Lawati's books in the web, and there are plenty written by foregn authors about Nepal, or Nepali authors writing in Nepali.

If itis for journal articles authored by Nepali, probably you can count them in fingers...

This may be of intetest.

Some book-loving friends of mine in Kathmandu have recently started:

The parent company, FinePrint, is a newly established publishing house in Nepal. Its first book is Durga Baral's book of political cartoons, which has been doing selling
well in the market.

FinePrint aims to publish books, and regularly hold book-related events such as author-reader interactions in Kathmandu. It recently held an interaction with Samrat and his readers at the British Council in KTM.

DISCLOSURE: I am NOT directly involved with FinePrint, though I did provide some informal advice, and their first (upcoming) newsletter, among others, features a
short interview with me (where I talk about my experience as a reader of books).

That said, in coming years, I see more and more Nepalis emerging as writers -- both
of fiction and non-fiction.

My list hereunder:

Echoes of the Himalaya - DB Gurung.
The first novel in English that I've read, by a Nepali author. Worth a try.

Every Place Every Person - Peter Karthak.
Have not read it - still to get hold of a copy. The book was reviewed jolly well when it was published last year - I remember reading a review on the book in Nepali Times.

Modern Literary Nepali - Michael Hutt.
A must-read - short stories incl poetry translated by Hutt. Hutt is a class act when it comes to cutting to the nubs of intricate meanings and nuances - I think, his command of the Nepali language remains unrivalled amongst the non-native academics/writers, well except the good old JP Cross (an ex-Gurkha) but I suspect, his works do not include translation of Nepali fiction. Oh, Hutt's brilliant essay on Nepali literature included in 'Nepal in the Nineties' is also worth a try - the book is edited by Hutt himself. Of all the Nepali writers, I would love to read Indra Bdr Rai in English - I don't think, Hutt's translated any of his works yet. He's done one Paarijaat, I read elsewhere but I am not sure, which one.

Faulty Glasses & other stories - B P Koirala. Translated by Keshar Lall.
Have not read it - so, no comments.

Mortal Attractions - Prakash Gurung
Ditto.

Good luck meera.
Carpe diem
