Hi,

I am working in IT and earn about 95k per annum. I am getting tired of the stress at work and want to do something on my own. What should I do? Something that will let me earn a lot of money. Any business I can open in US? (doesn't need to be IT related). Any suggestions would be appreciated. For a young girl like me, you may find me too ambitious...but that is what I am :-)

I can see where the thread is moving..Whatever be the direction, what was the point of mentioning that she earns 95k/annum?
Could she have asked the same question without saying the amount she earns?

Definitely, yes. It is perfectly fine, however, to ask for suggestions out here. She did seem to sound pompous in some sense though.

On the other side, 95k isn't a big deal guys. Even those with Bachelor degrees earn around that sum with bonus if you look at those working in the financial world. I know a girl who recently graduated from my school who is earning 100 k with bonus.She is working for one of the financial firms in CT.

If i were you, i would hang in there for couple more year build a relationship with some managers. As Dipankar mentioned there is a high scope for IT in Nepal too. They will outsource some company to nepal from india like few call center now. I think if the Political situation get stable u can start call center, it consulting company, data entry company from here and do work in nepal.
There is one more option too, There are many desi consulting company here in us. Why don't you open one. There are many nepali working for these type of consulting company. If you give a good rate there will be many transferring to you. You just need to show bank balance of $ 70,000 to sponsor H1B. may be few of us can start together and grow together.....

Good Luck Kat.....

I hate to be skeptical here about the poster's credibility, but she claims to have earned $35k less in this thread:

http://gbnc.org/sajha/html/OpenThread.cfm?forum=2&ThreadID=29970

A 60% salary raise (not bonus) in 5 months, possible? NOT.

That said I'd take much (except for a select few) of the postings in sajha with a pinch of salt...

I read bibas100's comments and then I read my postings again. I felt s/he is right, I myself felt whatever I wrote earlier sounded pompous. Silly me, sorry about sounding pompous then.

JavaBeans, :-) come on, are you FBI/CIA tracking down all the history? But anyways, from April this year till now, so much water has flown in Mississippi River. I myself have moved from South of USA to East Coast of USA.

I posted my salary figures just to provide some of my expectations about the earnings I wanted. Had it not been anonymous posting, I wouldn't have posted my salary figures. Well, thanks for your comments guys.

katrina,
60K in houston is a lot of money (O:. for 5 yrs exp. its preety on par. as you know TX has no state tax. plus cost of living housing is less as well. add on top of that no property tax et al.
if you compare that 60k in tx to east coast.. comparable would be around 80k

for 5 yrs experience that's a relatively good money.

but now getting back to being real and reality. 5 yrs experience puts you in a senior level so of course if you change your job now you would get in probably 96k in eas coast. i.e. considering 20% salary jump when you change jobs. which is preety obvious and acceptable.
so 6 figures after 5 years of experience NOT A BIG DEAL. BUT 2 YRS EXPERIENCE very good DEAL.

now common javabeans. that is possible. i.e. one can change job and get 6 figures if he/she has 5 years experience. BUT 2 YEARS not IMPOSSIBLE but very RARE.

====================================================
as always
what do i know (O:

If your tracks are clean why worry? One doesn't have to be Sherlock Holmes to read between the lines and pay attention to detail, something I suppose you didn't bother to learn as a software engineer. But you and I know that honesty isn't one of your best assets. Another case in point- you claimed to have moved from the South to the East Coast, however you state that you are from the Bay Area here:

http://gbnc.org/sajha/html/OpenThread.cfm?forum=2&ThreadID=35793

Your credibility is good as someone claiming to be a millionaire, but lives off of a cardboard box. If your messages were meant to be a joke, you should say so. I rest my case.

----------------------------------

thapap,
Do you have a personal experience to make such conclusions? It is possible for an above average (this means one scores 'exceptional' during performance reviews) IT professional with 5 yrs exp. to make above 100K, but what is not possible is to go from 60K to over 100K in a matter of 4 months. Even if one changes employers (one puts themselves in the market or with a recruiter) the new employer will only offer the market rate or maybe up to 15% above the current rate (depending on demand of course). Have you ever been interviewed for a job? They ask you how much are you looking for. And then they call your former employer's HR to verify how much your current salary is, etc.

The exception to the above rule is that if the candidate is exceptionally talented (means you were headhunted by a recruiter or the potential employer itself) then anything is possible. I had a classmate in my undergrad university (in the Bay Area) with no exp. who 'd been headhunted by Juniper Networks (networking gear maker in the Bay Area) b/c he wrote a networking algorithm that defied traditional packet-swtiching; his offer was well beyond 100K and a sign on bonus. Do you think our Katrina is this talented?

JavaBeans Moron, WTF is your problem you bone-head? Why are you bringing your personal angst against me here in the forum? You don't necessarily need to trust everything I tell, now don't bring up my issues with aznshawty also here. You dumbass tell me "if your tracks are clean why worry", if it is so, why had you to cry for canada when you were already leaving about two decades in US (now did it really hit you? you were always so proud telling everyone that u don't know much about Nepal and you have been living in US since you were 11 - dumbass). And you say "One doesn't have to be Sherlock Holmes to read between the lines and pay attention to detail, something I suppose you didn't bother to learn as a software engineer", did your post grad dip in CS helped you anyway? Why the f*ck had you to go for 497? Now rings the bell?

What I wanted to tell is don't get personal in the forums. I was seriously asking for suggestions in the thread..If you could contribute, that's wonderful. If you can't, just don't f*cking try to put your moronic thoughts onto it.

No offense Katrina, but labelling virtuoso like Javabeans as a moron is not appropriate, in my personal view, coz ppl here in sajha know tht he is one of those who deserve to be LISTENED. Ur case might have taken a different turn, but I say, there's always a better way to handle situations, hoina ra?? And again I m not being personal either

Lol first this thread was a bit weird... because someone was asking for some advice in sajha and stating her income and credit.... which I think is weird to do in a public forum. As someone mentioned earlier you could just say you have a pretty good income and credit.... But still...

And then people start fighting and ultimately calling names. This thread is down right hilarious. No offense to the originator, but if you are serious about all this the best suggestion would be to go to a proffessional. No matter how many suggestions you get nothing would compare to what a proffessional would tell you.

And remember this is a public forum. There will be people who praise you and people who will say not-too-good things about you. You should have thought about the consequences before posting. And talking about not posting personal things.... well arent income and credit score included in private stuff??

javabeans,
let me just assure you about my findings and conclusion.
tx does not have state income tax you can find that any where. you can verify that with your friends working in TX as well if you want to verify that.

about going to interviews lets see i can send you air tickets/mileage accumulation statements to confirm what i am writing below. if u want to look @ my offers that i rejected send me email with fax number i will send you those too. another thing is i apply for new position every 2/3 years even though i may not make a change just to see/feel my own level. one more some of the companies listed below you may have never heard of course (O:
lets see interviewed by

taqua capecod ma sept 1999
intellion ocula FL june 2000
philips semiconductors richardson tx july 2000
qtera/nortel networks boca raton FL oct 2000
lucent technology murray hill nj oct 2000
amdocs connecticut nov 2000
capital one richmond virginia may 2002
epic systems wisconsin june 2003
nextel virginia june 2003
micropatent connecticut july 2003
cisco systems san jose california august 2003
nokia research center irving texas may 2005
ipc communication connecticut june 2005
ibm corning ny june 2006
corning corning ny june 2006

and on top of that what I mentioned about salary it is very accurate.

=====================================================
do i have experience about it. very well yes. i do know about it because i am in close tie with industry.

=====================================================

javabeans, of course i have couple of my acquaintence working in HP, san diego. HP oregon. google, mountaiview CA. microsoft, redwood california. intuit, mountainview CA, cisco, SAN jose CA. making in the range of 120k . they are not exceptional people like you mentioned but ppl with either advanced degrees [ phds. or ppl with @ least 5 years experience]

=====================================================

what do i think of Katrina? and her intelligence?
i do not doubt about people's achievements or accomplishment. as i mentioned before for 2 years of experience her claims are very good. if you are in a right place at a right time not impossible. and you do not have to be a "GENIUS" to be making 100k plus. its just being able to know right people.
but for people with 5 years of experience 100k is not a big deal provided you are doing what you claim to do.

=====================================================
dyamn. i do have tons of time to respond here (O:

Katrina,
I know how you feel. I am in IT as well, love the job but the stress gets to me at times. It is less stressful if you are not a manager. There is less stress in technical field (away from managerial responsibilities) and I love not to be a manager esp the stress.

As far as business idea goes, I am exploring as well. Business idea sounds good but it is not without stress and you have to work a lot harder to make the money you are making now. Less investment means less return.

I support you in your effort to get feedback from a public forum.

Hello Katrina,
95K!!!!!!! its a lot in IT field in my opinion. I know it takes atleast 10 years experience to get that much salary. You seem to be young girl too. So I am surprised what kind of job are you in IT. Just curious to know.

THanks

goodjob as far as I know... you dont have to have at least 10 years experisnce to get a 95K job. I know some friends who have approx. same salary with a minimal job experience.

If someone points out my mistakes I happily oblige with acknowledgement; if the accusation is uncalled for then I defend it vigorously with facts. In your case you have done neither- the choice of your vocabulary and the use of profanity, I am afraid, will harm your credibility even more as opposed to justifying your cause. I'm sure most will agree that no professional with decent talent stoops this low in substitution for a much needed defense. What a pity.

You must've got me mixed up with someone else because I have no idea what you're talking about.

Truth is I don't know who you are. I browse through Sajha now and then when I have free time (been doing so since 2001), and happen to see your glamourous posts with eye-popping discrepancies, and thought it needed a deception-defying response. That's all. Nothing personal. IMHO, you are better served if your net etiquette (telling the truth is one) reflects your off-line behavior. If vice-versa is true for your current behavior then that's a whole different matter...

Generally speaking, it may not be necessary to have academic qualification for most IT support jobs; you may also be able to get into other IT positions (as long as you have equivalent amount of experience, i.e bachelors degree is equivalent to 4 yrs exp). However, you may find yourself in somewhat difficult position if you wanted to move up the ladder with a multinational, i.e. Fortune 500 (if that's your long term goal).

Also, keep in my mind that IT spectrum is quite wide; if you have a good IT background and you combined it with a graduate degree in business you might make a fine business analyst. In contrast, if you apply for a position as a software engineer where a rival search engine is working to immobilize the well-known page rank algorithm then expect a rejection. The best candidate for this probably would be someone with a good grasp of theoretical comp sci with good software engineering skills. I am sure you understand where I am going with this...
