Nepal is dying. Dashain did not prevent it from going down the hill. The practice of religion is fake. Nepalese did not learn how to love each other unconditionally and in a collective form. I wish Dashain had trained Nepalese 'How to love' .The entire culture- the century-old culture- has failed to save Nepal from dying. What's the use of such culture and such practice of religion?

I dont believe Dassian was created for the sole purpose of saving Nepal from dying in the first place...so please dont expect Dassian to save Nepal from dying.

any behavior or practice or belief that does not create an environment for Nepal to survive has to be thrown out of the land.

i heard hint "heard" meaning it might not be true that people in dashain esp. those who are like financially average and not even rich in nepal spend so much in dashain that are in debt and thus end up taking foolish actions to get out of debt!! and like lot of people meaning a huge percentage of Nepal's population do this!!
is that true? :S

Dashain is getting very competitive. Lots of people get in to huge debts. There are some people who take stupid idea to pay debt but not in huge percentage. Haven't u heard the saying in villages " द्शैं हैन द्शा आयो". Of course, everybody has their own level of Dashain but somewhat it is teaching how to kill and how to show off. This festival is only for rich Hindus.

I think Dasain has more cultural than religious meaning for the average Nepali. It's turned into an occasion for friends and family to meet and do things I wish they wouldn't like drink and gamble :) . In this day and age where we have a remmitance-driven (or "Lahure") economy, and many of our able bodied men toil in places like India, the Middle East, Malaysia and further beyond, this festival has become a reason for people to come home to visit friends and family. If you fly to Nepal at this time of the year, you just need to look at the passenger sitting next to you in that packed flight as evidence of this.

As far as animal slaughter goes, I think it's really senseless and Dasain can still be fun without it. I know a lot of people in urban areas don't slaughter animals anymore these days and instead get meat the same way they do the rest of the year - from the butcher's. I can only hope more and more people start doing this in the years ahead.

"This festival is only for rich Hindus."

I'd agree with that to the extent that this is true for any festival, in any country, in any religion. The rich always have it better than the poor. But to be fair, the festival is celebrated across caste and class lines in Nepal albeit on a different scale.

Happy Dasain!

(Ramadan and Yom Kippur greetings too!)

yes, like captain haddock said, dashain is a reason for people to be together. I just see it as a social function where people do certain things for the sake of culture. Now, one might ask why is culture important, what is it for? Well, I think culture is a just a set of rules and regulations, which one might want to follow or not. Some people like to lean on culture cause they feel insecure without it, some follow the culture, cause it’s ones of the ways to socialize. Anti-socials don’t follow culture.

And then when people meet, they have to do something right? only staring at each other doesn’t sound like a good idea to me :D
