Thanks to Santosh, Kantipuronline (22 Oct, 2006), for writing about the situation of Nepali Nurses in UK.

The NHS situation has never been stable in UK and there is always some kind of crisis they have to deal with. NHS is well known for its poor service and every now and then news about hospital wards being closed and job cuts are very common to hear.

In terms of Nursing, once they didn’t have enough nurses and they were recruiting from overseas. There was a stage when they were talking about their efforts to recruit nurses abroad which have boosted the NHS workforce and eased the pressure in many hospitals. And now they say they have more than enough!

It is true that they are not issuing or extending work permits for overseas nurses and asking them to leave. As they say now that they don’t even have enough jobs for nurses who graduated here in UK. In this situation, you can imagine how an overseas nurse who has just arrived here can find a job. Forget about job, it’s almost impossible to find a place to do nursing adaptation in NMC registered hospital or nursing homes. Even to find a place in University for 20 days protected learning is very hard.

From next year, to do the course, you have to score minimum seven in academic version of IELTS and you should have scored no less than seven in all four modules. But the length of an adaptation is reduced to three months now, as I found out from NMC.

There are always some culprits - so called agents like Kalish, who will do everything to earn a lot of money taking advantage of the situation. It is not something new. It is like some kind of ‘agent culture’ in our country. It has always happened in the past and will happen in the future. Why can’t our government regulate/monitor activities of this kind of people/organisation and do something about it? Well, while our country Nepal itself is going through a crisis and we do not have political stability and sense of security, I guess we have so many other major issues to sort out first.

After paying agents back home and here in UK, overseas nurses again have to pay certain amount to the university for the course and to nursing home to do the adaptation course. Can you just imagine how much money one could have spent by this time! Do not forget to include the living/travelling and other expenses as well.

For what I know, my advice to all our nurses back home is please think well before making decision to come over UK and try to find the better alternative, and if you have already planned to come then please be prepared to go through the possible difficult current situation. By no means I have no intentions to stop anyone going abroad seeking jobs, but just to make aware of the inevitable consequences that you may have to face.

तोकिएको काम नपाएपछि लाखौँ खर्च गरेर बेलायत पुगेका दर्जनौँ नेपाली स्टाफ नर्सहरू निम्नस्?तरको काम गर्न बाध्य भइरहेका छन्

ठूलो धनराशि कमाउने लालसामा बेलायत पुगेका नेपाली स्टाफ नर्सहरू तोकिएको काम नपाएपछि त्यहाँ निम्नस्तरका काम गरेर बस्न बाध्य भइरहेका छन् । पटकपटक गरी बेलायत पुगेका ५८ जना स्टाफ नर्सहरू नेपालमा आफू कार्यरत अस्पताल तथा नर्सिङ् होमको स्थायी नोकरीबाट राजीनामा दिएर विदेशिएका थिए । काठमाडौँको एजेण्टलाई करीब छ लाख ७५ हजार रुपियाँ बुझाएर बेलायत पुगेका नर्सहरू तोकिएको काम नपाएपछि आफ्नो लगानी उठाउन जस्तोसुकै काम गर्न बाध्य भएका हुन् ।
पीडित स्टाफ नर्सहरूका काठमाडौँमा रहेका आफन्तहरूले नेपाल लाई दिएको जानकारीअनुसार, गत वर्ष जेठ महिनादेखि पटकपटक गरी त्यहाँ पुगेका ती नर्सहरूलाई काठमाडौँस्थित बेलायती दूतावासले बढीमा एक वर्षको विद्यार्थी भिसा दिएको थियो । नेपाली स्टाफ नर्सहरूको ठूलो सङ्ख्या अलपत्र परेपछि काठमाडौँस्थित बेलायती दूतावासले आफ्नो देशमा स्टाफ नर्सका रूपमा जाने कामदारलाई दिँदै आएको 'वर्क परमिट' पनि हाललाई स्थगित गरेको छ । अलपत्र नर्सहरू भिसा अवधि सकिन थालेपछि भिसाको म्याद बढाउन बेलायतका निम्नस्तरका कलेजहरूमा दाखिला लिन थालेका छन् भने अधिकांश गैरकानूनी रूपमा बसिरहेका छन् ।
पहिला नयाँ बानेश्वरमा रहेको रयिल डि्रम्स एजुकेशन प्रालिले उनीहरूलाई बेलायतका अस् पताल तथा नर्सिङ् होमहरूमा स्टाफ नर्सको काम दिने भनी बेलायत पुर्‍याएको थियो । ती स्टाफ नर्सहरूसँग भिसा लाग्नुअघि दुई हजार पाउण्ड र बेलायत पुगिसकेपछि 'एडप्टेसन कोर्स' का लागि भनी तीन हजार पाउण्ड लिइएको थियो । लण्डन पुगिसकेपछि उनीहरूलाई करीब एक महिनाजति लण्डनदेखि टाढा स्ट्याण्ड्फोर्ड सायर भन्ने ठाउँमा २० दिनको 'प्रोटेक्टिभ लर्निङ्' को कक्षा दिन भनी छ साता होस्टेलमा राखियो । एक महिनापछि त्यहाँबाट उनीहरूलाई पुनः लण्डन ल्याइयो र पाँच पाउण्ड प्रतिघण्टा पारश्रिमिक पाउने भनी लण्डनका नर्सिङ् होमहरूमा दुई महिना काम लगाइयो । तर, तोकिएको पारश्रिमिक उनीहरूलाई दिइएन । ती नर्सिङ् होमहरूले पनि ती नर्सहरूले बेलायतको नर्सिङ् अन मिड्वाइफरी काउन्सिल -एनएमसी) को मान्यता नपाएको भनी थप काम दिन अस् वीकार गरेपछि उनीहरू त्यहाँबाट बाहिर निस्  के । आफ्नो डुबेको रकम उठाउन त्यहीँ बसेर जस्तोसुकै काम गर्नुबाहेक उनीहरूसँग अर्को विकल्प थिएन ।
बेलायतमा स्टाफ नर्सका रूपमा काम गर्न छ महिनाको 'एडप्टेसन कोर्स' पूरा गर्नैपर्ने अनिवार्य व्यवस्था छ । उक्त कोर्स गर्नका लागि बेलायतको एनएमसीको सहमति अनिवार्य हुन्छ । आईएलटीएसमा कम्तीमा छ दशमलब पाँच अङ्क चाहिन्छ भनेर पहिला भनिएन । लण्डन पुगेपछि आईएलटीस उत्तीर्ण गर्नेले मात्र 'एडप्टेसन कोर्स' गर्न पाउने र त्यो कोर्स पूरा गरेकालाई एनएमसीले मान्यता दिएपछि मात्र उनीहरूले त्यहाँका नर्सिङ् होमहरूमा काम माग्न सक्थ्ो । तर, पूर्वशर्तअनुसार 'अडप्टेसन कोर्स' नगराइएपछि उनीहरूले तोकिएको काम गर्न पाएनन् ।
रयिल डि्रम्स एजुकेशनका सञ्चालकहरू कैलाश नेपाल र वसन्त नेपाल अहिले भागेर बेलायत पुगेका छन् । नेपालद्वयले बेलायतमै एउटा कोठा भाडामा लिएर थेम्स कलेज सञ्चालन गरेका छन्, जसको मुख्य काम भनेको भिसाको म्याद बढाउने र नेपालबाट विद्यार्थी भिसामा अन्य मान्छे बेलायत झिकाउने गरेको पीडित नर्सहरूको आरोप छ ।
उनीहरूमध्ये धेरैले रेष्टुराँका भान्सा तथा घरेलु परचिारकिाका रूपमा तीनदेखि पाँच पाउण्ड प्रतिघण्टामा काम गररिहेको तिनका अभिभावकले बताएका छन् । उनीहरूमध्ये एक स्टाफ नर्सले टेलिफोन सम्पर्कमा नेपाल लाई भनिन्, "त्यत्रो रकम खर्चेर बेलायत आइयो, त्यो रकम नउठेसम्म जस्तोसुकै काम भए पनि गर्नैपर्‍यो ।"
यसरी बेलायत पुगेर आफ्नो दक्षताअनुसारको काम नपाएर अलपत्र परेका स्टाफ नर्सहरूमध्ये सबैभन्दा बढी सङ्ख्या महाराजगन्जस्थित शिक्षण अस्पतालको छ । त्यसपछि वीर, पाटन, प्रसूति, कान्ति, तानसेनको मिसन अस्पताललगायत काठमाडौँको बी एण्ड बी, नेपाल मेडिकल कलेज, काठमाडौँ मेडिकल कलेजलगायत धरान, पोखरा, नेपालगन्ज र वीरगन्जका शिक्षण अस्पतालमा कार्यरत स्टाफ नर्सहरू रहेका छन् ।

we have to hunt these criminal manpower agents and business firms.... and let them payback whatever cost to these innoceant Nepali womans.

one thing i dont understand is, why people from nepal are so excited about speding money after these f##king agents...can't do some research on their own, email the authorities in colleges they want to apply and ,,seek financial aid ...there is plenty of information in the internet,,it's not even like before when one had to wait for brochures to arrive from abroad,,everything is just clicks away in the internet and matter of emailing the concerned people...i cannot believe that these are some educated people who get into all this mess acting as parasites and blindly trusting these agents,,,

Nepalese need to contact with UK and ask for Help to hunt these both Kailas Nepal and Basanta Nepal.

We need Nepali communities and organization for that.
