Guys, I am going to Nepal next month. I will be there for at least 8 months. I need reliable and fast internet access. I did some research and found out these rates.
Corporate Broadband .
64kbps.............Rs 15000/month
128kbps............Rs 25000/month
256kbps............Rs 40000/month
All these are for unlimited usage.
Being a layman about these things, my question is how fast these services are?
Here I use TimeWarner Roadrunner service cable internet.
Is it as fast as roadrunner?
Thanks for any help

bokeshor, your Roadrunner speed is at least of 3Mbps

findout how many kbps are there in 3 mbps.

you will findout how fast nepali cable is.

im a computer science student.

1024 KB = 1 MB

so if it is 256 kbps internet speed man u will feel a big difference in internet speed.

specially in nepal.. broadband there is like dialup here man.. its frustrating..

also if u are in nepal depending on where u live u might be able to access Subesu, i think thats the name, maybe spelling is wrong ..

also check out Wlink.

also remember that, KB and kb are different terms.
eg,
KB = kilo bytes, 1 KB = 1024 Bytes and 1 Byte = 8 bits.
kb = kilo bits (bauds), 1 kb = 1000 bits.

one more thing to realise is that, these speeds that they will advertise are not the real browsing/downloading speeds you will get, because of one simple reason: we are still not connected to a fiberoptic internet backbone in nepal, which means that when u get a 256kbps connection, you speed from you computer to the ISP will be approx 256kbps, but when will get bottlenecked when you access the internet, as the data will have to go through the satellite (or even a leased line if you are outside ktm) to another ISP in either hong kong or singapore, whoever the ISP has an agreement with. So, your connection get bottlenecked with the bandwidth the ISP has bought for the satellite connection. All the internet traffic for that ISP goes through that one/two satellite connections they have, and so your individual speeds will deteriorate. But on the otherhand, if you are downloading something from the ISP's server hosted locally at the ISP premises, you will get respectable download speeds.

cheers,

Thaks all.
I cannot afford these rates.
Anyone has any suggestions? I can afford like USD 50/month, if I can get good connections.
I have experienced Nepal Dialup internet at Cyber cafes. That is not going to work for me.
Thankyou.

हामी अझै सत्य युग मै अल्मलिरहेछौ । बिज्ञान र प्रबिधीको फल चाख्न अझ केही समय लाग्ला जस्तो छ।

if you know someone who has access to dial up from some offices and get the password/support etc, that way u can get free svc. Some cyber cafes are very slow. Forget downloading large files, etc. The cybercafe across the Nepali Stock Exchange on Putalisadak used to be relatively better than most other cyber boutiques in Ktm. Things might have changed much now....

Broadband in nepal is worse than 56K dialup in the US. Doing anything in the internet is just painful in Nepal once you're used to the broadband in the US.
