'Gaur killing most brutal' [ 2007-3-23 ]

By A Staff Reporter
KATHMANDU, March 22: A team of human rights activists, who returned to Kathmandu after visiting Gaur, said that they found the people were killed in the most brutal way, a sane human being could not even imagine.

The team had gone there Thursday to evaluate the cause and the situation following a clash between the Maoist-affiliated Madhesi Front and Madhesi Jan Adhikar Forum (Madhesi People's Rights Forum) on Wednesday that left more than two dozen dead and dozens of others injured.

Briefing the media persons in Kathmandu on Thursday about what they saw in Gaur, they said the people were killed by split bamboo canes, crushed to death and even after chasing up to eight kilometers. The killers had even tried to burn the bodies by pouring kerosene on them.

Some women were raped before they were killed. "Some had even had their breasts cut off and some were also beaten up in hospital while they were undergoing treatment," said Dr. Mathura Prasad Shrestha, a member of the team.

He said 28 bodies were found but they could be more as bodies were being found in the drains, wells and in the fields. Among the killed six are Madhesi and rest are Pahade (hill people), he added.

Dr. Shrestha said it was criminalization in the name of politics. "Twelve people were killed after they were chased up to 8 kilometers in Hagaminia village." Their heads were crushed by stones and bodies mutilated.

Bodies of three women, who were raped before they were killed, were found. Bodies of two others, who are also suspected to be raped and killed, are yet to be found. "We heard that the women had their breasts cut off," he added.

Subodh Pakurel, another member of the team, said that criminals are wondering freely but the police administration seemed to be indifferent. If the administration had been a little more cautious and alert the incident could have been averted, he added.

Pyakurel said that only four days ago an Indian MP Ananda Mohan Joshi had come to Gaur and had made a speech that they would support the movement of the Madhesi Forum.

Other members of the team were Daman Nath Dhungana, Padhma Ratna Tuladhar, Gauri Shankar Lal Das, Gauri Pradhan, Bishnu Pukar Shrestha, Dr. Arjun Karki.
