will these high-profile panelists be talking anything extra than what is currently surfaced on the news media? I don't have any hope.

trend of their speech and the program:
- hamile yesto yesto garyom - hamro manyata yo ho
- arule yesma sahayog garena or arule yesto yesto gareko bhaye ramro (in soft tone)
- some good masalaa stuff - desh ganatantrako batoma hidisakyo and so on
- no concrete idea, vision and workplan to uncover and discuss in the meeting, they would even not produce a work plan for coming year
- will try to avoid their best in talking about who is responsible for failure of the CA election, but will tell they will come with common consensus very soon (no timeline yet)
- will ask all to help them, but if anyone ask them to pinpoint what help they want and why, they don't have convincing answer.
- rush of people around leaders who want to renew or build inter-personal relations
- some photographs, and prolly a brief party with chicken thigh and drinks

I think, this sort of program is merely wastage of resource and time, so no interest in joining at this moment.

Sorry poonte dai for criticism, but just jotting down here my gut feelings.

Latest update:

Lastest update: The organizers are still hopeful that Suresh Ale Magar
(CPN-M) will be a panelist. However, since the US EMbassy in Kathmandu has
delayed his visa process, they have had to temporarily suspend his
participation at the event.

The Nepali delegation to the UN convention on transitional justice includes
few more prominent Nepali politicians, including but not limited to, Shekhar
Koirala and Prakash Sharan Mahat. Asia Society is also looking forward to
possibly including them, time allowing, in the panel.

Also, since there is very limited time for a high number of panelists, I
have been told that the event will be a direct, free-flowing discussion,
rather than the usual presentations (by the panelists) followed by Q & A.

Hope to see some of you there!

And yes we are aware of YOU GUYS organizing such events as YOUR gateway to Nepali Political Arena. What the fug have they done for a year ? NOTHING !!!!!! Prachandey is still thanking them with a big smile by pissing all over their Republic movement.

No offense, but if I had to listen to politicians talk, which I don't particularly like to, I'd rather listen to real politicians on the ground - even if I disagree with them - than virtual naysayers and cynics some of whom, frankly, seem too detached from reality to even make a sensible comment on the subject.

Just my thoughts.

Captain saab,

I too havn't had a lot of good experiences with panelists from Nepal, particularly the politicians. More often than not, I have found them inarticulate and incoherent. Most of the time, I suspect it was due to the language barrier; but even when given an opportunity to make their presentations in Nepali, they mostly ramble and sound out-of-touch with the questions thrown at them.

Nevertheless, despite much disappointment, I have always come out of those events having learned something new, either on the topic of the discussions, or on the nature and style of Nepali speakers. Also, agree or disagree with the panelists on the substance of their talks or the style of their presentations, for me, those events are opportunities to challenge them on issues that matter to me.

Now, even with relatively negative experience of the past, all but one (Mandira Sharma) is new to me in this particular panel. Without hearing them out, I would not jump into conclusions about them based on past experience with other Nepali speakers. Maybe I will come out disapppointed yet again tomorrow, but I surely would not have lost anything by being willing to listen to new voices.

As for Mandira, last time I heard her, she proved to be an exception to the lot -- she was remarkably articulate, knowledgeable, and to-the-point.

I am not all associated with Asia Society in any form, and neither am I part of the organizing team of this event. I was merely trying to spread the word on an event that I thought would be of interest to Nepalis who can make it to NYC tomorrow. For those interested in Asia Society and their events (and they always have excellent programs on Asia), you can visit their website at:

Poonte dai -

I commend you for your effort in spreading the word. I think it's a decent panel and I don't really understand the criticism against them. Democracy is a discourse at different levels and I honestly don't think the criticism leveled against the panel on this thread is even remotely justifiable. My last comment was directed at virtual naysayers on Sajha and other forums and not the panelists themselves. I'd rather listen to RCP or CLY or MPS to find out more about political trends in Nepal than some of my good friends here on Sajha who, as well intentioned as they may be, are way off base when it comes to assessing the political reality in Nepal.

Hope all is well with you.

:)

Captain,

Your point is well noted. My apologies for misunderstanding the subject of your original post in this thread.

All well at your end is likewise at this end. :)
