Get an MBA from one of the top B-schools and you can just barge in...

Is there a deadlock here now?

HAHAHAHA!

Shahil! you gotta offer something to Xix in return!

Remember one of the fundamentals of economics is:
"There is no such thing as a free lunch".

Mark that, it's an interview question.

Good luck!

Actually, I am trying to get an intern position at Goldman Sachs. Since those folks normally recruit from top business schools, where I am not so far, I was wondering if some networking would help. Therefore, I am looking for people who could help me out here.

Few questions:

Which university do you attend?

How are your grades?

What is your major?

Are you involved in ANY leadership position?

Its too late for a summer internship at the major investment banks now...cutoffs were around Jan. However, lets hope you find something in your field.

I go to University of North Texas... Not a big name in the national list of business schools, but a good one for we Nepalese around Dallas area. It's the 4th largest university in the state of Texas.

GPA? Over 3.5

Leadership? Not the president of an organization but active member of a student organization and a National Honor Fraternity.

Sahilbryan ji, it is not bad to dream high. But don't be too too amibitious! Unless you can be prospective candidate who know some people with millions so you can money for their private equity, you are no use to them. At least, that is how I experience.

sahilbryan,

If you are still around, and you STILL want to take a stab at Goldman here is what you do:

1) Since you are an undergrad you will need to transfer to ONE of the top 10 National schools offering business education i.e. U of TX at Austin, U of Penn, UC Berkeley, U of MI at Ann Arbor, MIT. Unfortunately, your chances are very slim with current university.

2) You will need to join a club where you can be a part of the committee, i.e. Secretary of the Finance Club

3) You will need to do a lot case studies via your class or club AND compete in intercollegiate Case Competitions, i.e. EDS runs one of the well know competitions in Plano, TX where most of the students from Top 10 undergrads compete

4) You will need to do some volunteer work, i.e. tutoring, mentoring

5) You will need to develop a relationship with a Professor who is comfortable enough to write an extraordinary recommendation for you. The way this works is that you need to labor your extra hours doing a bit after class research for the Professor AND you should score an A on the subject s/he teaches...

6) You need guts...lots of it!

This says it all:
Investment banks go for someone who can be as alert at 2AM in the morning as they were when they started at 8AM the previous day.

Good luck!

Hey Sahilbryan, I graduated from a not very well known school also, but I can tell you that really will not stop you from where you wanna go. Yes, it may take you a little extra work, but the key is once you get in (and you will, because the IB sector is growing so fast, they need more and more people every day), it is all about your performance, not what school you graduated from. I have Ivy leaguers working for me now.
To get in though, you will need to throw out feelers right now, and do not stop with one firm. There are a lot of IB firms out there that are looking (JPM, Lazard, GS, MS) and odds are some will respond and give you a second look. And then just blow them away with what you have when they do. Thats what I did.

And I know where University of North Texas is. Not a top tier school, but is fairly well reputed.

Tru dat, jhyalincha!! The school's name is just enough to get your foot into the door. Once in, its all about who puts in the hardwork, the ridiculous hours and can suck up/brown-nose at every step. The mediocre ones will be left to fend for themselves…However, have noticed that Ivy degrees do get a lotta preference here. A BA from there did end up par with an MBA/Ph.D from other local well-reputed institutions…Maybe it’s the contacts they have (fraternities, alumni, college recruiters), the school name, etc. or maybe its just coincidence. I still am yet to find out. Meanwhile, gonna ask all my relatives/cousins who are interested in IB to apply for ivies while they still have a chance.
