Guys,

Is it true that U.S. educated nurses directly get a green card contrary to other undergraduates who get a H1 Visa?

Thanks

The only option for nurse at the moment is H1C visa... but they are very few hospital that qualifies to sponsor for it.. I am pretty sure... GC process will re-open within 6 months or I am hoping to.. but no guarentee for anything....

I don't like the nurse profession, nurses are not special to the nose because none of us like patient’s smell even after reaching home. In addition, Nurses are been used 4 entertaining doctors it is why there is always help wanted and easy to get H1b.

Thanks Rosa.

So, I if understood this correctly, nurses used to get GC directly but right now the process is stopped. But it is expected to start again in a few months time and after that nurses can apply for GC directly without having to get a H1 visa.....right?

Nepali Keta,
What you have heard is correct.

US Educated nurses who have 4-years BSN degree and an RN license can apply for H1B if needed (for example when EB3 category is unavailable). However, certain conditions (most likely similar to any other corporations) have to be met by the sponsoring hospital.

US Educated nurses who have only 2-years Associate degree can't apply for H1B.

In both cases, if the Visa Number is available (Nurses and Physical Therapists were Schedule A category until last October and they were able to file in EB3 category until then), they can file directly for green card. In this case the requirements are:
1. US Associate or BSN degree.
2. (passed NCLEX and hold) Unrestricted license in the intended state of work
3. VisaScreen certificate from CGFNS (US nursing graduates do not have to retake the English test, but have to verify their US license, NCLEX result and Transcript from CGFNS to get this certificate).

You are ready to file for green card (when new law passes and more quota is available) if any hospital is willing to hire you.

Foreign educated nurses who have passed NCLEX from any state have to go through the same VisaScreen process, with an added requirement of satisfactory English test result to issue VisaScreen Certificate.

Let me know if you need any more information (I am not lawyer but have some practical experience in this matter :-)

As far as I know, nursing is still the best degree(people do respect the profession as well) if you want to get a job with a decent salary. I don't know much about it but I think there is an option to directly apply for labor certification or something like that. In addition, if you study one more year after RN, you land into a zone of benefits...not sure what they are though.
So, best bet would be to talk to your lawyer.

Reasons behind shortage of nurses (and teachers) in US include:
fewer women pursuing careers in nursing because of greater options for women beyond traditional careers in teaching and nursing
poor working conditions and pay in preceeding decades
retirement of older nurses
changing demographics - the aging us population creates greater demand for healthcare workers
minimum nurse/patients ratios in states such as CA
a shortage of slots in nursing schools due to lack of instructors
Instructors make much less then their counterparts working in hospitals.
The shortage of nurses has led to tremendous increase in salaries, benefits and improved working conditions. Nurses are courted and enticed. For example,
in addition to income up into six figures, "travelling" nurses may get condos, bonuses, moving expenses, shorter hours, etc.
In addition to teachers, the Phillipines exports about 13,000 nurses per year to the US.
Pillipinos choose careers in nursing because it's a ticket to the us.
Indeed, Pillipino doctors go back to nursing school in order to come to US as nurses.

In a profession where effective communication is essential, inadequate English language skills would be a handicap.

Bhangli Damini,
there are some gay doctors, those gay doctors for sure need Keta(male) nurses. Taditionally, there were no gay doctors so no needed male nurse, once doctors become gay, male nurses are required as well.
Ani Bhangli ji, kata bata ya prakat bhayo timi, you know what, I do not take a hard line, but just support republican.
