I am wondering if anybody has ever filed for extension of visitor's visa for the parents. Is it easy to get approval? I have heard that if they deny the application, they will automatically cancel the existing visa (even if it is multiple entry) for the remaining period. Is it true?

You mean extension of Visa itself or Extension of Authorized Duration of Stay?

Visa Cannot be extended within the US. If it has expired, it must be obtained from ourside the US (for B1/B2, I think it must be one's home country ... I am not sure about this).

Extension of Duration of Stay is simple process. Just need to speciry "why". If reason for extension is good, there is no problem with it.

Denial of extension doesn't by itself cancel the current visa.

Bored,
Thank you for your response. They (your friend's parents) had to go to Canada means that they went and re-entered the USA and they got new I-94 at port of entry. However, there is an option that you can request for extension by filling form I-539 (request for extension or change of status) to USCIS. I am not sure what is the possibility of approval and the consequences (if any) if it gets denied.

Thank you Prakash Ji,
Yes i mean extension of authorized duration of stay.

By the way, do you have any idea what may be the genuine reasons to request for extension?

There could be many ... depends on your current situation. You can tell
1. I am getting married (if you are unmarried) so would like to have my parents here.
2. We are expecting child (if you are married and your wife is pregnant)
3. We have greatest Hindu festival in OCT ... so would like to have them here.
4. Their health condition is no good enough for travel (if they are sick and have problem travelling)
5. I will be going back in few months and would like to travel together ....

and list goes on

of course u may require supporting documents for what ever you say.
