Army takes action against 14 personnel in ration tender scams:

Nepal Army (NA) has taken action against 14 of its personnel who have been found guilty of irregularities while finalising ration tender.

Heads of the Rukum-based Bhairabi Dal Battalion, Dailekh-based Shri Bhawanibax Battalion and Sridal Barrack based in Tehrathum and some other officials have been found guilty of wrongdoing while awarding ration contracts to private sector bidders.

According to the Directorate of Public Relations (DPR) of the NA, a court of inquiry set up to investigate into the scandal found them guilty of irregularities. The quantum of punishment to the guilty officials ranges from warning to 60 days detention to suspension of promotion for two years.

Heads of the three barracks have been suspended from their current status of commanders along with suspension of promotion for two years each. Of the 14 officials, 13 are officer-level personnel and one Subedar.

A Caption of Rupumardan Battalion and a Lieutenant of Sabuj Battalion have also been punished for their involvement in the tender scams.

The army had launched inquiry after media reports exposed widespread irregularities in ration tenders for these barracks.

Nepal's army chief is to be questioned by a high-level panel over his role in alleged excesses by the security forces during April's pro-democracy protests.

General Pyar Jung Thapa will be questioned by the panel on Sunday.

The panel was formed after street demonstrations forced King Gyanendra to end his year-long direct rule in April.

Twenty-one people died and hundreds were wounded when security forces fired at protesters and used batons and tear gas to disperse them.

Next week, the panel will question two senior army officers, including a retired major general, in connection with the alleged excesses.

Lt General Rukmangad Katuwal is the army's second senior officer, and retired general Dipak Bikram Rana was in charge of Kathmandu valley at the time of the protests.

The Royal Nepalese Army, now known as the Nepali Army, led the unified command of security agencies that was deployed to maintain law and order during the protests.

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the street across the country to press for the restoration of democracy during the three weeks of protests.

A multi-party government has been in place since then.
