Coke's orange drink makes Nepalese in UK see red

KATHMANDU: Nearly a dozen Nepali associations in the UK are raising money to take soft drink giant Coke to court over the pouch of a relaunched orange drink that portrays Nepalis as primitive people who eat oranges without peeling them.

The sizeable Nepali population in the UK has spent £20,000 to seek legal remedies against Coca-Cola Enterprises of Oxbridge whose Capri-Sun, a "fun drink for kids", relaunched in March, is the cause of the furore. The pouch shows a half-eaten, unpeeled orange, bearing the legend: "Did you know... in Nepal they eat oranges without peeling them..."

Headed by Ashok Shrestha, Nepali organisations, including Nepalese Association of UK, Britain-Nepal Academic Society, Nepalese Democratic Forum, Nepal-Scotland Association and a host of other groups are part of the campaign, saying the pouch makes fun of Nepalis and shows them as an uncouth people.

Nepalis have also bombarded the offending company with protesting email, forcing it to hastily withdraw the pouch after three months of the re-launch.

"We would like to offer our sincere apologies for any offence caused by the quote that makes reference to Nepal on the back of the Capri-Sun orange juice drink pouch," the company said.

"We recognise that this has caused some distress and would like to assure you that we have taken immediate steps to replace the quote in these packs. It was our understanding that people in Nepal cut oranges into squares to eat them rather than peeling them."

wtf!! You still have to peel it though. It's hardly our fault that your assigned observer disappeared to scratch his apples, before he could see us eating our oranges .
