By COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press Writer

As the summer swelters on, skyscrapers and apartments around the city will crank up air conditioners and push the city's power grid to the limit — but some have found a cool alternative.

Some office towers and buildings are keeping their AC use to a minimum by using an energy-saving system that relies on blocks of ice to pump chilly air.

"If you take the time to look, you can find innovative ways to be energy efficient, be environmental and sustainable," said William Beck, the head of critical engineering systems for Credit Suisse.

The systems save companies money and reduce strain on the electrical grid in New York, where the city consumes huge amounts of power on hot summer days.

Ice cooling also cuts down on pollution. A system in Credit Suisse's offices at the historic Metropolitan Life tower in Manhattan is equal to taking 223 cars off the streets or planting 1.9 million acres of trees to absorb carbon dioxide from electrical use for a year, according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

Such a reduction in pollution is valuable in a city where the majority of emissions come from the operation of buildings. Officials said there are at least 3,000 ice-cooling systems worldwide.

Because electricity is needed to make the ice, water is frozen in large silver tanks at night when power demands are low. The cool air emanating from the ice blocks is then piped through the building. At night the water is frozen again and the cycle repeated.

Ice storage can be used as the sole cooling system, or it can be combined with traditional systems to help ease the power demands during peak hours.

At Credit Suisse, for example, the company must cool 1.9 million square feet of office space at the historic Met Life tower.

In the basement, three main cooling rooms house chilling machines and 64 tanks that hold 800 gallons of water each. Credit Suisse has a traditional air conditioning system, but engineers use the energy-saving system first.

Construction on the system took about four months, and company engineers say it is extremely efficient.

"When you make something mechanical, it can break, but a big block of ice ... isn't going to do anything but melt," said Todd Coulard of Trane Energy Services, which built the Credit Suisse system.

Trane, the air conditioning arm of American Standard, also developed a system for Morgan Stanley's Westchester County offices and just completed a new system for its offices on Fifth Avenue. A new Goldman Sachs headquarters will also have ice cooling.

Credit Suisse is considering installing the systems in offices around the globe, but nothing has been decided yet. Coulard, an expert in energy efficiency, was hired by the company four years ago to develop the energy services department.

"The idea of not only saving money for large companies, but doing something that benefits the environment, is win-win," he said. "It's doing the right thing."

Ice storage at Credit Suisse lowers the facility's peak energy use by 900 kilowatts, and reduces overall electric usage by 2.15 million kilowatt-hours annually — enough to power about 200 homes, officials said.

At the Morgan Stanley facility in Westchester County, the system reduces peak energy use by 740 kilowatts and overall electricity usage by 900,000 kilowatt hours annually.

Both companies received incentives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority under a program designed to improve the power grid and help businesses reduce operating costs.

The technology is not for every office space. There has to be room to install the large tanks — and costs are considerable. Credit Suisse spent more than $3 million to renovate its cooling system and Morgan Stanley's costs were comparable, meaning the technology is best suited to large companies.

"This is for companies that want to go green, but there (need) to be other benefits, returns on investments," Coulard said. "It works for larger companies because their cooling costs are so considerable."

Morning BC -

How's it going? Thanks for the article - very interesting. It reminds me of ancient India and the Middle East where they used water and wind based natural air conditioning to cool palaces and mansions - perhaps not as effectively and efficiently as ice based cooling talked about in this article but a technological marvel nevertheless in its own ways back then.

BTW, did you watch the YouTube/CCN debate last night?

Monin' Capn'
Yeah I remember these cooler fans in India to. They had these metal boxes covered in straw and had a lil water pump pumping water from bottom to top & running it down the straws around the vented areas. And a fan would suck the cool air out of straw encased metal box.
Nah I did not watch the Debate las nite. I am not interested in Politicians seducing voters to gain the lead. Its just funny to see these guys kissing ass like crazy to appease the voters. But after election they tend to forget everything EVERYTIME. BUt like prostitutes we(voters) keep following their leads before every election like nothing happened. They would not even let my favorite candidate(Nader) participate in any of the debates(democrats or Republicans) and they are supposed to be examples of modern day democracy(ironic ain't it ).

He he BC.

Now that you brought up the straw and water coolers in India, they had one limitation: they worked only in dry heat. I wonder if the same is the case with the ice-based cooling system. I guess an AC cools by sucking out the humidity in the room which a water or ice based cooling system might not do.

As for the Nader, yeah, I think he is one hell of a principled guy. I have a bit of a libertarian streak in me these days and also like Ron Paul in the Republican side. I personally believe that pragmatic politics is about making the best with what you have and I am okay, although not thrilled, with the current crop on both sides.

In case you haven't caught up on it yet, I thought this guy was very creative with his question last night:

Death Penalty For Porn Producers

Iranian authorities voted to introduce harsh new measures against porn
stars, cameramen and anyone involved in making erotic films or DVDs
this week, with miscreants facing death.

Parliamentarians voted by 148 to 5 for a bill which said "producers of
pornographic works and main elements in their production are considered
corruptors of the world . . . and could be sentenced to punishment as
corruptors of the world," Reuters reported, which the news agency said
means execution.

In more bad news for the adult entertainment industry, African
newspaper the Nigerian Tribune complained that local men devoting themselves to
studying the finer details of 419 internet fraud schemes at internet
cafes are being increasingly distracted by pornography, with potentially
devastating effects.

"A chance masturbator stands the risk of nervous-depressing permanent
insanity, premature death, especially for those with high blood
pressure, diabetes, blood diseases, inability to perform sexual act naturally,
etc," the paper warned.

"Other dangers attached to masturbation sexes include inability to
pull out of the act. It has even been documented to cause more deaths
among boys in Europe than any plaque (sic) or war."

What's the Best Way to Eradicate Envy?

Envy is misplaced inspiration. We are all artists,
our lives are works of art. As artists we need and thrive on influence
from others: role models who inspire us in various aspects of the
creation process, either by the way they operate their creative process, ie
the way they earn their money, style- and quantity-wise, or the way they
use their resources, ie the way they spend their money and the
lifestyle they enjoy as a result, including the sort of people they appear to
enjoy it with.

In our healthy state we are inspired by this input and happily use it
as a guide to how we create our own works of art and arrange our lives
progressively more beautifully and excitingly for ourselves and everyone
around to enjoy.

In our depleted state, when our energy is low, hence feeling less
capable of creating the lives we really want, we succumb to envy instead of
inspiration, despising the one who appears to be more advanced or
progressed along the path of success.

However as all thoughts transmitted have energy, which invariably
rebounds on the sender multiplied (what goes around comes around, in other
words), this negative output will rebound and further exacerbate your
depleted state, thus instigating a downwardly spiralling vicious cycle.
The main benefit of envy, providing you remain mindful and awake to the
unpleasant sensation it provokes within, is to serve as a default
reminder to guide your thoughts away from the negative and to wish the other
well instead.

The more you wish the other well, the more you invite the possibility
of you attaining to similar or even greater heights of success. By
wishing the other well, you place yourself on the same energetic success
frequency as them and benefits will follow over time as a result. In fact,
wishing well to others, who appear to have or be more than you, and
wishing it with a true heart is one of the most effective triggers for
instigating a boost to your own success."

US Prison's Cross Dresser Code

Both male and female visitors attending America's notorious prison the
Chicago Correctional Center have been banned from wearing sexy clothing
according to regulations posted on the jail's website.

"All persons wishing to visit inmates at this facility are required to
be properly dressed before being allowed entrance," the prison dress
code states, "Regardless of gender, visitors will not be admitted wearing
mini-skirts, halter/tank tops, revealing/transparent clothing."

Shorts and culottes are allowed but must be in good taste and
non-revealing in length," the prison adds, "Bicycle or spandex shorts are not
allowed. Shoes and bras must also be worn."

Skrufff man-in-New York was unimpressed, querying 'shoes and bras must
be worn? I look terrible in a bra and don't really go that way at all."

Fellow Skrufff New York contributor/ D-List founder Daniel Nardicio was
also surprised musing 'I wonder why they need this policy?'

"Are there that many skanky ass hos showing up to visit inmates who are
dressed like hookers? What effect is this having on the inmates?
Enough of an effect to actually create a policy? It sounds like typical
American sex panic to me. Let's ban anything that doesn't conform to what
WE want," he suggested.

Daniel's social profile was meanwhile boosted in New York this week
when the Village Voice ran a preview article recommending his upcoming
Pride party Evening Service, advising 'expect more temptation than even
Ted Haggard could handle'. The influential listings Bible also dubbed
Daniel 'New York's king of queer sleaze', a title he happily embraced
with a salacious aside about his prison interests.

"God, I wish I'd been in prison, though not here in the States but
somewhere like Poland," said Daniel. "Could you imagine being locked up in
prison with all that Polish meat? I know people say you shouldn't
fetishize prison and sex in prison, but I'd be the cellblock whore in a
polish prison," he laughed.

Yeah they're nuts Capn'
But at leat they dun discriminate. Cause Islam being a male dominated religion only punished women like this(stoning).

As far as the current candidates for Presidency is concerned ! he he I do not see anyone worth comending. They all sound like crooks in disguise waiting for their turn. Those debates is a chance for them to proclaim themselves as the most fit for the position. They come out there claiming this and that(whereas it should be us who should be judging them if they are all that they claim to be). I really dispise this whole system cause these elected folks keep lying one after another.

George Bush Sr,"Read my Lips, No new Taxes."

Bill Clinton," I did not have sex with that women."

George Dubya," Anyone responsible for leaking Valerie PLame with be severely punished." (ended up pardoning Libby)

Thats why I like Nader.

Good luck then BC, to you and Nader - it seems you both need it! Teasing - dont get mad I think Nader is a great guy on some issues but I seriously doubt he can govern well.

As for Iran and Islam and gender, I don't even want to start. I can only hope this stupidity comes to an end soon.

Have a good one.

The Political process in this country would not even give him a chance. I thought Dubya coudn' t govern squat too when he took office( I mean did sit on his ass and did nothing till the 9/11 incident). I mean if you want to elect another liar sweet talking his or her way to White House then we can go your way Capn' :-)

I like Nader cause of his conviction to the truth and honesty through out his life.

Islam can never be a religion for modern day world. Yuh know why ? Cause they cannot seem to be able to update the Koran to this century. They keep wanting to go back to the medieval times(golden age of Islam). But these mullah don't seem to comprehend that fact and the human civilization has come a long ways from Prophet Muhamed times. THAT IS ONE OF THEIR MAJOR PROBLEMS.

BC - We might just have to agree to disagree on US politics. I respect your conviction but I doubt we can have a meaningful conversation about it here.

As for Islam, it is a pity that those with the strictest and most orthodox interpretations of the Koran are the ones getting all the media lime light. I wish the other voices, including those of the woman below, got more coverage.

The only silver lining, if it can be called that at all, to the current struggle within Islam and its impact on the rest of the world is that all of this is debate and conflict is bringing out deep bottled-up feelings amongst many people. That in turn opens up touchy issues like the role of women etc to debate. It is debate and discussion, often over long periods of time, and the awareness they create, that can most likely bring about a change of hearts.

Yeah I second that motion.

But I am still ticked @ the ruling elites of the Democratic and Republican elites ...in absolute control of the whole electotial process here. Perot fugged it up for Bob Dole and Nader fugged it up for Gore(wus still a factor for Kerry in the last one).

I really loved the last California Govna's election. Where Mary Carey aka Porn Star, Gary Cole the actor, Gallagher the comedian, etc ran against Ahhhnold the Muscle man. he he I point was why put someone's name on the electorial ballot and not let them participate in the whole process. BECAUSE BOTH THE DEMS AND RREPUBS ARE SCARED THAT A THIRD PARTY MIGHT HIJACK THEIR VOTES.

I don't think Islam will ever be mordanized cause look at all the other Religions... they are adapting to the modern age. BUt Islam wants to go back in time and make it stand still. In other words they do not want to change their ways. Christianity is the most adapting religion interpretating their old and new testaments in modern day world(even entering the whole spiritual aspect to accomodate new members). Same with Buddhism, Hinduism, and Zionism. BUt not Islam they stil want to go their barbaric medieval ways of stoning, cuting off limbs, etc etc THEY PREFER GOING BACK INSTEAD OF MOVING FORWARD.

BC - I guess I perceive politics somewhat differently from you and have a very different view point about the two main parties. I see the flaws you mentioned but am willing to accept them in spite of those flaws. I will leave it for another day, perhaps under more contextual circumstances, to discuss in detail.

On the question of Islam, I agree that there are some Muslims who are stuck in a time warp. Unfortunately, they seem to be getting most of the media and academic attention. However, based on my personal experiences at home and abroad as well was what I have been able to read and watch, I am convinced there are plenty of moderate Muslims who are the silent majority in many countries. This is not a clash of civilizations or cultures between the West and Islam - it is a clash withing Islam that is impacting the West and the rest of the non-Muslim world.

As the living standards of Muslim countries rise and the populations in these countries get more political freedom (assuming they do), there is a good chance that the recent tide of militant Islam, which btw, is still the battle cry of only a sliver of the overall Muslim population, will abate.

Some, including Rushdie and Naipaul, have argued or insinuated that Islam is intrinsically more militant because of its doctrine of conversion and contempt of other faiths. The truth is the same exists in Christianity and it is the rejection of such dogma by the majority of the followers, and not the absence of such a hard-hitting doctrine, that might have made Christianity appear to be so docile of late.

Remember, the Christians too slaughtered and committed far more heinous crimes in the name of their religion before they collectively realized that it was all a waste of time. I suppose the same might happen with Islam.

And Hinduism has it's share of nut cases and loonies too (Shiv Sena, VHP). Even Buddhism, in spite of its emphasis on knowledge and enlightenment, has seen it's share of not so enlightened fanatics (e.g in Sri Lanka)

Islam is not a gone case - at least not yet. It is likely going through the machinations and churning that every faith, philosophy or ideology goes trough before it reaches a stage of stability and harmony.

Just my thoughts.

Hope all is well with you.
