KATHMANDU, Aug 1 - Maoist chairman Prachanda has said that the party’s new political experiment with “the government, parliament and the street” has been a success.
Addressing the ongoing central committee meeting of CPN-Maoist in Kathmandu Wednesday, he added they need to carry this experiment further to establish democratic republic in the country.

The Maoist supremo said this countering comments issued by some of the party leaders that the political experiment has not been that successful.

He argued that though there were some shortcomings in the new experiment after decade-long armed insurgency, it cannot be labeled as “unsuccessful”.

Prachanda added that the party should now concentrate all its energy for the establishment of a republic in Nepal through the Constituent Assembly elections.

The elections slated for November 22 is due to elect an assembly to draft a new Constitution to restructure the state along federal line, apart from deciding the fate of the monarchy.

In his political proposal tabled at the party meeting that began Tuesday, Prachanda has also said “a people’s revolt is a must”, and that it has “no alternative.”

The Maoist chairman also said that his “party’s decade-long people’s war, the 19-day April uprising and the party’s year-long legitimate struggle after joining the government” would make the people’s revolt’ possible.

An expanded meeting of the party is expected to follow the central committee meeting. The district leadership has already arrived in the capital to participate in the meeting.

The CPN-M central committee members were unanimous on launching a people’s revolt before the elections to the constituent assembly if the country is not declared a republic prior to the polls, sources said.

Some central members had opined that the leadership must prepare itself for “a sacrifice” and quit the government in a bid to declare the struggle programmes.

Stating that the Maoists were being singled out and blamed for all the unruly activities in the country, the committee members said that “the party needs to adopt a different roadmap.”

The Maoists have concluded that their role will be diminished if the ‘current transitional phase’ continues for long.

They have also reached a conclusion that the Nepali Congress has “bullied” them the most.

However, sources claimed that certain central members were of the opinion that the struggle must be continued while remaining in the government. They said that declaring an immediate revolt would incur problems, especially in the management of combatants and that there won’t be a significant participation of people in the street protests owing to the monsoon.

Expressing concern over the loss of life and property in natural calamities, Wednesday’s meeting of the Maoist central committee has also decided to set up a team led by Dinanath Sharma to help the affected people.
