hey bagmati
1.i am wondering what made you include keshav raj pindali in the top ten list. I am not really aware of his literary talent except some halka fulka satire in bimarsha and a few novels like ekadeshki maharani. If your top ten is based on his hansya bynga dont u think you are not doing justice to bhairab aryal.

feels good to talk about nepali sahitya. Its been almost two yeras since i read a nepali book. The last one was BPs atmakatha and that was good.

i would like to know if there have been any good nepali book out in the market lately. I heard of Sita pandey's novel, has anyone read it? Any recommendations please?

First of all, I admit that my sequence of name is not properly made. I have included bhairab aryal also. There is no doubt that Bhairab Aryal is the number one 'hasya byangya nibadhkar'. After him, I think keshav pindali takes the second
place, "Khai Khai", Pindalu, ... are collections of famous satire proses.

I read BP's aatmkatha in nepal and I also like it very much. He has written only about early years(upto around 20) of his life in this book and It is said that "pandulipi" of later part was lost(which is also mentioned in Aatmajiwani of BP edited by Ganeshraj Sharma)

Since I am fond of nepali literature and I have not been in nepal for a long time, I have tried to enter this topic so that interested persons may prolong the discussion.

Two of my favorites are Bhupi Sherchan and BP Koirala. Both were iconoclasts, just irrepressible, and way ahead of their time. Bhupi called himself "Bhupendraman Sarbahara Sherchan", but later renounced his early passions for communism. Some of his poems in "Ghumne mech mathi andho manchhe" are just brilliant. I'm now reading up a lot on Ho Chi Minh. If anyone has Bhupi's poem "Ho Chi Minh lai chitthi", please kindly send it to me at kautilya100@yahoo.com. I'd be so very grateful. Even his ONLY song that Narayan Gopal sang, "aljhecha kyare pacchyauri" is magic.

In short stories and novels, BP Koirala's 16 stories collected in "Doshi Chasma" are superb. I've also enjoyed his short novels that he wrote while in prison - Modiain (The Grocer's Wife in Maithili) and Sumnima, among others. Modiain is short but takes a heretical swipe at the Hindu epic Gita. I've been told good things about "Hitler ra Yehudi" also, but I haven't read it. Both his Atmabritanta and Jail Journal are a gold mine for political researchers, but Jail Journal - his diaries in Sundarijal - also doubles as an impressive literary work.

I also enjoyed Guru Prasad Mainali's "Naaso" a lot. And Laxmi Prasad Devkota remains a legend of course. I mean, who else could have written "Paagal"?

I really regret not to have read enough of Parijaat and Balkrishna Sama. Will definitely pick them up later in life. While I have read single and isolated pieces of most established Nepali authors, I wouldn't be able to form solid opinions of my own without reading more of each. The talents of the likes of Lekhnath or Madhav Ghimire for chhanda kabita is amazing, and I appreciate them a lot, but if I have to cast a ballot at the point of a gun in favor of one great Nepali litterateur: my bias for anything riveting (dimaag ranthanaune khaal ko) would lead me to cast a combined vote for the two "anarchists": BP Koirala and Bhupi Sherchan.

I am also fan of Bhupi's kavitas. When I read "Ghumne mech mathi andho manchhe". I had recited most of them at that time, but now They have very dim image in memory. Some of the lines among them:

"nai nai nalyaunus, dar lagchha"
"bhancchu, bhanchhu"
