Disclaimer: this is just an observation and by no means support of panchayat or any other political parties. The current system is not good for the people or country by any means.

Let's think of 3 different points in time.

A = Past ie panchayat rule
B = Present ie Maoist pseudo democratic rule
C = Future

Let's consider the following variables

X = Common Nepali living in the village a classic village commoner
Y = Common Nepali living in cities such as pokhara, ktm ie a classic city commoner

Now if you consider how X and Y have been affected in timeframes A and B. And also consider the possible scenario in the Future C.

If you compare the living conditions of X and Y during timeframe A and B, there has not been much positive change. The conditions have worsened to be precise.

During timeframe A, things remained constant with few atrocities that you heard of once in a while. But peace prevailed and the quality of life was consistent. If you determine a scale for peace and quality of life, on average the scale was somewhere in the 80%s and consistent. If you look at the wealth line it was probably on the 10%s.

Fast forward to current times of the Maoists also known as the SPAM, they were able to quickly downgrade the peace and quality of life on the average of commoners X and Y from the high 80 percentile to low 10's with the wealth index consistent.

So obviously the common person has lost 70% peace of mind and quality of life with their wealth level constant low within the past few years of SPAM rule. All this while the common citizen is being told that this is necessary to boost the peace and quality of life back to the 80% and the wealth index to a higher number.

If you look at the trend, these current politicians are responsible for bringing the peace and quality of life index from 80 to 10 within 10 years. What are the chances of them bringing any positive index up? IMHO they have made such irreparable damage to the social, political system that it is pretty impossible to make any progress in the peace, quality of life and wealth index of the country.

Lot of naively optimistic people want to believe that this is all for the better but there have not even been an iota of hope when it comes to the development of the country or it's democratic stance. Thousands of innocents have lost their lives while the politicians promise a better fairer democratic country only to disappoint with lies, atrocities and unfair prevalent practices encouraged by the rule of the gun. If we the educated people buy in to their rhetorics of impractical developments in the future, then the future of our country is doomed.

Bhaley, your reasoning is correct but one would want to see a lil more research on how the percentages came about. Like you, I have always agreed that no positive change that has come about in the last 17 years of democracy with the same leaders who are basically playing muscial chairs among themselves. If this is what democracy is about, isn't it the same as when we had the Royals…Atleast the Royal Regime only had one guy looting us but today, any neta out there has made millions in illegal gains. Hell, if democracy is to survive the next few years, the current monopoly amongst the Koiralas, Deuba and Bhattaria has to go. And now with Prachanday involved, it’s a friggin cartel. How much more are we gonna allow these fuggers to keep sucking the treasury with no one stopping them? They all intuitively know that the King is the only one who can stop their current atrocities, so they're trying to rid him of his powers completely. Why else would they wanna make this issue even bigger than the millions starving in the drought affected regions, the millions affected by the floods, the public educations system that is in ruins, the entire Terai region in strife, etc. The people's plight should matter more for these ironically called "democractic" leaders (and the fuggin commies). BTW, the Maoists know that once the king is out, SPAM would stand no choice to their brute force. Hell, SPAM got them into the parliament, now SPAM is gonna give them the nation in a silver platter.
