Ascites victim tortured for ‘illicit pregnancy’
Kantipur Report
KATHMANDU, Oct 30 - She was harassed, beaten and ostracized by both her family and by society just because her stomach became enlarged. She was even forced to name a person who made her "pregnant".
The more the stomach of Sunita Ram, 16, of Hasarpur VDC-9 in Siraha district, grew, the more she had to suffer physically and mentally. Unable to bear it any longer, Sunita, then 15, even named an innocent man as the person who had made her pregnant. The health post at Lalpur VDC also said she was with child.
The fact that she was suffering from ascites (or fluid deposition in the stomach) came to light only after she failed to give birth even after completing 10 months of her supposed pregnancy.
Sunita has now been brought to Kathmandu through the initiative of Dikchhya Chapagai, chairwoman of Pabitra Samaj Sewa Nepal. Sunita is receiving treatment at Bir Hospital, which is providing it to her free. However, Sunita's brother and sister, who don't even have proper clothing to cover their bodies, also have no relatives in Kathmandu to turn to for any kind of support. They are so down and out they can hardly afford any care and support for Sunita.
According to the hospital report, there are10 liters of water in her stomach. The reason for deposition of the water has not been identified even after three days of investigation. On Monday evening Sunita was taken for a CT-scan.
When Sunita was accused of being pregnant before marriage, she had to suffer alone. However, after she was diagnosed with ascites, it was members of her family who were made to suffer. Sunita's family was forced to organize a party for the whole community bedsides paying Rs 500, as fines for accusing an innocent man of making her pregnant.

In-laws ‘try’ to burn woman alive
BY JANAK NEPAL
BANKE, Nov 2 - In yet another instance of violence against a woman over dowry, one Imtihaad Halwai of Nepalgunj Municipality-5 and members of his family reportedly tried to burn his wife alive Thursday.
However, the victim -- 19-year-old Sakira Khatun -- managed to escape unharmed and reach her blood relatives, her clothes drenched in kerosene.
"My husband and father-in-law held me while mother-in-law poured kerosene on me," Khatun told the Post, narrating the harrowing incident. "However, as she was trying to light the matchsticks, I managed to escape from their clutches and flee."
The Halwai family had been torturing her ever since her wedding two years ago for not bringing enough dowry. She also disclosed that they burnt her cheeks and arms with a heated panyu (serving spoon) just two months ago.
"They used to torture me frequently as my father couldn't fulfill their demands for a motorcycle and three lakh rupees in cash as dowry," she said, showing the burn marks. "Sometimes they threatened to kill me with electric shocks while at others they threatened to burn me alive."
She also claimed that the Halwai's family snatched away all her possessions. Her one-year-old daughter is still with them.
The woman has filed a complaint with police, demanding action against her assailants.
Abdul Ajij, father of the victim, who came here all the way from Gonda in India, demanded stringent action against the perpetrators. "My daughter should get justice. What can be a worse matter than this for a poor father?" he asked with a choking voice.

What a shame for Nepalese we are hearing these kinds of brutal atrocities time and again. Why don't the law makers enforce a strong law against these atrocities so that no one ever dare?

School Spirit
In the Nov. 14 issue of City Paper, the story about a sincere effort by Catonsville native Christopher Heun to reopen and construct a school in remote Ramche, Nepal ("Distance Learning," Mobtown Beat, Nov. 14), is extremely appreciated. I would like to thank journalist Randy Leonard for such a wonderful presentation on the Mobtown Beat pages. I am a freelance journalist of Nepal currently living in the Parkville-Towson area and had never got the opportunity to read such a story related to Nepal in local newspapers. Thanks to the City Paper editors, too.
The rural areas of Nepal are in such miserable condition that the basic infrastructures and facilities are not available. Lila Tamang is a symbol of a Nepali layman who is struggling to uplift his own village and community. As I am an active Nepali community member in the Baltimore area, I would like to request the other Nepalis and myself to support the Santi School project of Ramche in Nepal. I would suggest to Mr. Heun and his friends Jackie Lesh and Laura Parkhurst to get in touch with Nepali people living in the United States. Approximately 6,000 Nepalis are living in Maryland currently. I would like to thank the Society of Ex-Budhanilkantha Students-North America and the Nationwide Scholarship Program for their effort to materialize a Santi School project. The work of Mr. Heun is highly commendable.
