Hi everyone,

250,000 people are currently being served by only one doctor in Achham, Nepal. Nyaya Health, a nonprofit organization operated by Nepal and US-based health professionals, is calling for donations to start its Primary Care Clinic in Sanfebagar, Achham. The Clinic will begin its services in a few weeks and we need all of your support!! Scroll down to the bottom to learn about our upcoming Surgical Camp in Achham (see "Urgent Need") and to donate (see "Make a Donation"). The following link has a one-page information on Nyaya Health and a Poster that you can put up on bulletin boards etc. Please forward this request to your friends!

Who we are
Nyaya Health is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which is a unique effort of Nepal and US-based health professionals partnering with the Government of Nepal to provide health services in rural Nepal. Our Board of Advisors include:
Paul Farmer, M.D., Ph.D. (Harvard Medical School)
Gerald Friedland, M.D. (Yale School of Medicine)
Caroline Jacoby, Ph.D. (Johns Hopkins School of Public Health)
Kaveh Khoshnood, Ph.D. (Yale School of Public Health)
Fernet Leandre, M.D. (CliniqueBon Saveur)
Sheldon Campbell, M.D., Ph.D. (Yale School of Medicine)
Michael Rich M.D., M.P.H. (Harvard School of Public Health)
Alfred Sommer, M.D., M.H.S. (Johns Hopkins School of Public Health)

Where we work
Achham is one of the poorest districts in Nepal and was severely affected by the Maoist war. It is home to 250,000 people who are served by only one doctor. The annual per capita income is $150 and many migrate to India for work. Migration has fueled an HIV epidemic with 8-10% of returning migrants testing positive for HIV.

What we do
Over 60% of children in Achham are chronically malnourished. About 99.5% of babies are delivered outside a health center, mostly in homes and cattle sheds. We are providing primary care in Achham with a focus on maternal & child health, HIV & TB. We will slowly expand our clinical and public health services and renovate, restock and restaff a hospital that was abandoned 25 years ago.

Why donate to Nyaya
Your contributions go a long way. A full course of antibiotics that can save a child's life can cost only about $2. A cesarean section costs about $11,000 in the US. We conduct this life-saving procedure in Nepal with your donation of $80. 100% of your donated amount is used to provide services in Nepal. The need is immense and we cannot meet it without your help.

URGENT NEED!! Pelvic Organ Prolapse (falling of organs like the womb from its normal position into the vaginal canal) is a huge problem in Achham. Conservative estimates in studies show that about 25% of the women have prolapse. Nyaya is coordinating with an NGO in Nepal and a hospital in Kathmandu to run a Surgery Camp in Achham this November. Currently, there is enough funding only for 25 curative hysterectomies. Given the high prevalence rate, we are expecting at least 75 additional surgeries. Each surgery will cost about $200 and we are aggressively raising funds so we do not have to turn away patients who will face serious infections and other problems with urinary and sexual functions. Please consider becoming a "Surgery Donor" by helping a woman in Achham. (Our colleagues report that women with third stage prolapse who do not receive surgery use anything from dirt to sand to cement to keep the uterus from falling out of the vagina.)

We have been receiving several donations from Nepalis around the world. Thanks so much for your support! Please spread the word about this initiative that has brought together Nepal and US based doctors/health professionals to work in one of the most neglected areas of Nepal.
