Dear friends,
I am in Optional Practice Training (OPT) period and am working with one US company. Could you plese let me know what kind of taxes do i have to pay while working under OPT cause i think my company is deducting every kind of tax from my salary. And i heard that while you work in OPT lots of your taxese will be exempted.
I would appreciate your help.. Please

You have to pay only federal and state tax. No other tax. Talk to your HR about it--you should get the money taxed for other purposes back.

Siwani,
I am also in OPT and working. You don't have to pay Social Security and Medicare tax. Talke to human resources. They would need your copy of I-20 for the proof. If they have already deducted, ask them to reconcile that amount. GUD LUCK!

This might be useful to you:
"A nonresident alien temporarily in the United States as a nonimmigrant on an "F-1," "J-1," "M-1," "Q-1," or "Q-2" visa is not subject to social security and Medicare taxes on pay for services performed to carry out the purpose for which the alien was admitted to the United States. Social security and Medicare taxes should not be withheld or paid on this amount. This exemption from social security and Medicare taxes also applies to employment performed under Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training, on or off campus, by foreign students in "F-1," "J-1," "M-1" or "Q" nonimmigrant status as long as the employment is authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service."
