What Fortune forgot to add was that the sacrificed goat was then served as mutton choila to the non-veg passengers.  The pilots got to munch on the most important part: the head!!  LMFAO

And whats this about SONY wanting to acquire Nepal Airlines??  Good for us all!

Dear Editor,
I am really sadden to read about the religious and cultural ritual performed by Nepal Airlines as the 62nd dumbest business moment for the year 2007. Being a regular reader of Fortune, I strongly believe Fortune should have used better judgement to distinguish between a religious/cultural ritual with a business norms. Moreover, the airline's engine were repaired before the flight took off and the sacrifices of goats were made as a ritual to ensure safe flight. Fortune, portrayed the event as if the flight were flown with bad engines and the rituals were performed to cover up the act. I hope, Fortune will use better discreation in future and respect the cultural and religious believes of others.
Thanks,

That's true! they worshiped Akash Bhairab and sacrificed 1 pure black and pure white goats. It was all over the news in ktm. The plane resumed the regular flight schedule after the worship.

The decision to sacrifice goat was made after a director at engineering dept had a dream.

Frankly, I think this incidence should be included in reply believe it or not!!!

deshbhaktanepali
Why are you so defensive about such issue. It's good that people know about it, so they will not repeat such stupidity .Religion is not being criticized here, it's the public display of such practices.Keep your religion with you, inside your temple, inside your house (separation of church and state). Public display for a national issue, it's utterly unacceptable. Truth hurts, such practices needs to be abolished. Period. The guy who's the mastermind behind this needs to be fired and put to jail.
Wait, you've a family member who works with the Royal Nepal Airlines, THAT'S it.
Same old Nepali pana, defend your love ones even if it means stupidity or corruption and even crime.

BM,

Billy Graham said, " the biggest argument for believing in god is when person dies and if there is no god, he has nothing to loose, but if  he didn't believe in  and god really exist, he is f**ked ( someone made this word up though). I'm not a religious person but I do not try to make mockery of customs that has been practiced for long time and solely measures in the level of faith. Faith cannot be regulated  nor persuaded so give up your mentality that only whites are good , everything about nepali sucks. What do you say about president pardoning turkey on thanksgiving day though that turkey never lives up even for a year? or groundhog day or bull's stampede in spain. It's stupid nonsense yet that's the tradition. I can count countless customs, practice, rules regulation in western societies that sounds awful to many easteners. Good and bad both exist in societies, those fools wanted to make ratings so that has been acheived. But you don't have to flow with them because you know the real truth atleast  being nepali. Yet you  have been attempting to express opinions about the world, from  asians having small penis to why women are from venus, totally based on half knowlege. You're  progressive  in thinking but you may not know that you have lost a path in that journey or arrived just by jumping to it. I try to kept quiet but couldn't resist when everytime you try to be pink flemingo in the mass of ducks  in your writing yet failed to show the real dance. peace

Mr. Truth, Fortune put the event under the 101 dumbest moments in business.  In terms of a cultural aspect, to each his own: Can't comment on the sacrificing bit (even though I personally don't believe in animal sacrifices).  However, as a business move, this has cost the national carrier dearly.  On the flight's return from HongKong the next day, the plane returned half-full.  Some cancelled their tkts because of the international frenzy caused by this event thanks to the BBC and other international media houses.  This "sacrifice" in the waseterner's eyes was seen as a "fix" to the problem instead of having aeronautical engineers adressing the issue...All in all, its just a case of Nepal Airlines (and most other Nep businesses) not having a well-versed spokesman who could've put and explained the sacrifice in a better/rational way to the media.

exactly samsara, bbc did this story to shock westerners for their own benefit knowing we sacrifice goats every dashain ( no shock value here). Now this has become bad business move in the eye of Fortune making world one more time to convince that nepali don't repair their mechanical devices but only pray god  for help running It's airline's  total  failure I agree that but what to say when follew nepali join the westerners (not knowing the whole) voice knowing clearly what goes around nepal, treating  this practice like it was imported from some voodo african countries. I'm not supporting/defying the practicie itself but to me the issue of ignorance is the biggest part of this news and bbc has suceeded to make most of it by twisting the fact. And when some nepali are ashamed by this news this just baffles me how quickly they have forgotten who they were before. I really don't blame those foreigners fot not buying the ticket, shocking news sells faster in this world but what next for nepali people, give up to worship of stone god, dog, crow, bull or the whole culture of dashain and other to appease these whites, PETA and born again nepalese ?

Mr Truth

There are 2 issues here-your faith and the action by RNAC. If I've offended you by any means regarding your faith, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that. All I was saying the sacrifice was a stupid stunt, even worse was that someone had a dream about it. As you might agree, we do not want to appear stupid beside being poor. I don't know how aware are you of those facts. If you believe the spokesperson for RNAC didn't do a good job, then don't you think he needs to pay for that, at least get fired or an apology. So far I've not heard anything of consequences, seems like somebody with lots of power and connection. People with ties to RNAC have come in the past to justify the event here at Sajha with different username, not surprised. I'm not trying to dig golds out of this story but what do you expect the media to do, glorify and hail the ceremony? Our authority didn't pull their arsh to explain the event properly to the foreign media, what you do-go blame them instead. You see a flea on someone's head we have an axe stuck in your head.

your comparison of Thanksgiving is closely related to Dashain, not the RNAC event. When have you seen people sacrifice animal in PUBLIC during a opening ceremony, construction, inauguration or to fix a major problem (maybe an airplane???) in the US? So don't turn the table and change the subject or even make it blur. Nobody is saying animal sacrifice is wrong during your own festivities. It's done all over the world. Public display of blood doesn't send a positive message, that's it. Well you might argue,it killing no matter what, which is a whole new topic for discussion on what constitute inhumane. Let's not get distracted.

No I do not follow Billy Graham. Don't be judgmental and assume that all Nepali are alike. Just because you stick to a tradition carried on for trillion of years, doesn't necessarily make you a better Nepali than me. I prefer to forget those that doesn't make sense to me, just me (I'm not saying it has to be you). You don't have to explain where I come from, save that for your kids.

With that I leave you and your ---engineer who had a dream how to fix the airplane-- in peace.

So Long. Peace
