The Namesake, a novel by Jhumpa Lahiri made into a movie by Mira Nair...What a movie.  Usually I tend not to watch such artsy, over-hyped, award-winning movies preferring to just read the summary on the web or looking up the novel itself, but this one really made my day.  Brilliant acting by Tabu (the award winning female from Chandni Bar), Kalpen Modi (Kal Penn...yes, the same stoner dude from Harold and Kumar) and Irfan Khan.  Still can't believe I missed out on this movie for the past year and a half.

To all who are still living under a rock, go and get a copy of this movie and watch it.  Especially for the first generation cats abroad, this movie is bound to change your perception of why you came here and want to reamin put in this land which is not your own.

hahaha Loote...Wet eyes?  hahaha   I heard that the novel is an even greater tear-jerker.  Man, you just gotta go and get yourself a copy of the movie.  I loved it and after being outta my home (Nepal) foreva, I could relate to a lotta issue that revolved around the characters.

I had watched it several months ago, though accidently. One of my friends copied it to my hard disk without me asking for it. When I started watching I was enthralled. Yes, it is really a classic, superb story, superb acting...

Nice to see others who watched it too have the same thoughts like I did.  BTW, Rythm and world map, did you know that Abhishek Bachan (for Gogol's role) and Rani Mukherjee (for Ashima's role) were Mira Nair's original choice??  Am glad this didn't happen as Kal Penn really did justice through the 180 turn he underwent for this role...And c'mon, Rani Mukherjee over Tabu?  That would've sucked BIG tyme!

Yeah I totally think it was good that Abhishek Bachan and Rani Mukharjee were not in the movie. I think Tabu is a totally awesome actress and Rani would not have done as good. Kal Penn was awesome too. I had wanted to watch this movie forever but hadn't gotten the chance and it turned out to be as good when I watched it. :)

Don't have guts to watch it again. It swept me off my feet when i watched it 6 months back. Haven't seen anything so close to reality of immigrants. I can't think of anyone than Tabu to justify that character. Must watch movie in my list too !!!

Yeah "TWO THUMBS UP" I loved every part of it. Tabu is at her best as ever, Irfan Khan is a brilliant actor, watch "The Warrior" to see one of his best performace. Guys you should watch  Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay kinda documnetry but really mind blowing. So here is the combination and it worked.

Mr. Rythm I think you haven't watched Black. Rani could do any kind of role..

Amitraja, That would be Ms. Rythm to you sir. And I dont mean to insult Rani Mukharjee, I have certainly watched Black. I just dont think that the specific role would suit her better though. Dont be offended by my harmless remark.

Great book.

Decent movie.  I would have preferred if the movie were set in the Boston area (as the book was).  And I really wish they had not filmed an early-1980s airport scene at JFK's brand new terminal 4. That just threw me off.  Also, unlike in the book, there movie has a bit of trouble getting aging and timing correct (the time since Ashima's arrival in the US is not enough to have kids grow up quite as much).

I watched this movie as soon as it was out. Awesome and very realistic movie. Actors are just  too good, just like made for the significant characters...Worth watching.
