Hello!! Everyone.

Today we got the email message from international advisor as follow!

-----"It has come to my attention that some of you may have been trying to beat the system.   During the semester you have been working 20 hours for the university and 20 hours for Aramark.  You seemed to think that with two payroll systems no one would ever know.  Since it seems there are those that have no integrity we are now checking both systems.  If you are found to be working illegally your I-20 will be terminated and you will have to go home.  THERE IS NO REINSTATEMENT FOR WORKING ILLEGALLY.

Remember that if you ever want to apply for permanent residency they will look at all your tax files and if you cannot show permission for working more than 20 hours during a semester the chances of your application for permanent residency being approved are very very slim."

----------

But the fact is almost all the nepalese and indians has done above work. So there may be more than 60 international student that those  may be found guilty.

Note: Above both are on campus job.

What would be the best solution at this situation.

Your suggestion and comments are highly appriciated.

Just act dumb, tell them that you made a mistake and then don't do it again. I know tonnes of people, including myself, who worked more than 20 hrs a week on campus and nobody ever said anything. I'm sure this is just a warning and there won't be any dire consequences as long as you commit to retracting your working hours to 20 a week.

No it does not. CPT and on-campus jobs are two different things. Again, when I was doing my internship along with some other internationals, we were doing the same too(Working upto 30 hrs a week with CPT+on-campus). That should not be a problem. However you cannot work 10 hrs (assistantship) and 20 hrs of some other on-campus job. Don't worry about it!

I am not sure about that. I think these days they are very strict. Even if ou have a cpt, i think you are not supposed to work more than 20 hrs a week when you are enrolled full time. during summer and vacations, you can work as many hours as you want.

just be careful...i have heard stories aboput student status being revoked because people went over 20 hours.

Well nobody ever said anything to me and my status remained intact, but anyways its always good to look before making a leap, so talk to your adviser about it.

I believe you can not work more that 20 hours per week during your semester.

First go and talk to them orally and inform them  that you were not aware of that fact.

For any extra hours than 20, you should work in 'cash'

Talking usually solves a lot of things.. Just try to explain to them (it is better if u don't say it explicitly) that they would in fact be destroying your career if they go ahead with what they have planned. Plead with them and tell them it will not happen again.. I had a smaller problem with my CPT which I did solve by pleading with them... good luck..
