BJP leader backs Monarchy in Nepal | | | |
Thursday, 17 January 2008 | New Delhi, January 16: L K Advani, prominent leader and Bharatiya Janta Party's Prime Minister in Waiting, termed Monarchy as an essential and necessary institution for Nepaland her stability. Speaking at a programme entitled "Democracy and Conflict Resolutions" organised by Dainik Jagran Daily, New Delhi, he criticised the UPA government for remaining a mute spectator to disbanding of the Monarchy and ascendancy of Maoists in the Nepalese polity, said, "noting that it has grave implications for both the countries".
Claiming that there was a close nexus between Maoists on both sides of the border, Advani said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was right in characterising Naxalism as the biggest threat to India 's internal security. "Why then has the UPA government remained a silent onlooker, with Communists in India playing the role of a colluder, when constitutional monarchy was disbanded recently under the pressure of Maoists," he asked. "Would they demand that Pakistan or Bangladesh cease to be Islamic Republics?" he asked.
Advani also launched a veiled attack on the US for turning a blind eye towards those countries in Asia who he said export intolerant and extremist religious ideologies. "All of us know that intolerant and extremist religious ideologies are being exported out of certain countries in Asia which are far from being democratic. Nevertheless, they are tolerated by those proclaiming to be defenders of freedom and democracy worldwide," he said."This self-deception will prove costly to its practitioners and to the world at large," he said."The developments in Pakistan should prompt us to recognise a disturbing trend: The term 'democracy' is being manipulated in international relations discourse to suit the self-serving purpose of preserving one's global domination and preserving one's 'spheres of influence'," he said .
He also referred to the illegal migration into India from Bangladesh, dubbing it as a major problem.
