Hi frens,

Though I am not in the immediate position to start for job hunting I just  want to know does volunteering in any filed looks good for your resume ? Have you done such in past and do you think that added something to your resume ? I was thinking of volunteering but couldn't find one thats related to my job so do you think I should do or not even though if it is not related to my study?

Similarly, How about being actively involved in many student organization group ? Do you think this too benifits or this is just waste of time ??

Hope to get info !!

Voluntering certainly helps. It may or may not help you right away or directly, but, will surely help you in one way or the other. First, you get to know people and get a chance to impress them with your hard work (even though you may not be an expert, you can try hard to work hard), skills, positive attitude, professionalism, personality, punctuality, etc. Second, including that you volunteered in your resume shows your leadership skills/ability and your positive attitude to initiate and complete tasks. Third, you will get some professional recommendations (eg. managers, supervisors, directors) that are quite important while you hunt for your first jobs. Fourth, your resume will show that you have some experience, atleast some, that will set you apart from others, who might only have college level or no working world experience. Fifth, you get to know things better about your field from people working there, you get some ideas from them, some tips, some suggestions/advise, and surely a lot of help to get yourself a job. Sixth, you never know, they might end up hiring you! Last but not the least, it is fun.

So, voluntering surely helps. It did for me and I am sure it will for you as well. What is your field?? Some fields might be harder to get volunteering services than others. If you write about your field, many more tips and suggestions might pour from different people.

Good Luck to you.

First of, have faith and trust yourself. You can do it. Actually, I think accounting is an easy field to get a volunteering into. I belong to a different field and it is quite hard to get volunteering services in it. You can apply for internships (paid or unpaid), which are better than volunteering. Try recruiters in your area and go through them for internships, they will have a whole lot better ideas and ways to get you an internship. Companies pay them for these kinds of services. But, be sure to have an attractive resume before you go to them. Include all details in your resume, exageratte (sp) things (a bit), write about every technical/professional terms you know even though you only have learned about them in text books. Google something like "accounting recruiters" or just "recruiters" and choose ones in your area. Set up an appointment and go meet them personally, do not just submit your resume online.

Which part of the country do you live in??? There are some Indian accounting firms in some parts of the country and they will most probably given you an internship or volunteer chances. Or, just apply to individual companies directly, but I think going through recruiters would be faster and easier.

All the best to you. Write in this thread if you need more suggestions and pls o write which state you're in.

Usually, volunteering or internship oppurtunities are done during the last semester or the last 4-5 months in college. So, if you're not within that bracket, then probably, thisis not the right time to start. Take some core courses and when you're near your graduationwith a semester, start doing it. I hope this concludes this thread (from my side). If you need more or any suggestions on this matter, feel free to post in sajha. Good Luck to you again and yes, TX rocks more than CA!
