Loote

Being "fittu" is part of my culture - so I do not care.

All these organizations and whatever other small time associations that they have in and around NYC, LA, Dallas, Boston and all the big cities out there IMHO do NOT represent the majority of the voice of the Nepalis here int he US.  I clearly see that the Himalayan Buddhist Assoc. (which has an "active" membership of close to 3,000 Nepalis here in NYC alone...the word "active" is used here as these peeps are willing to walk right outta their house at midnight if anything arises) was not included in this talk they had.  As far as my personal analysis into most of the various organizations we have running amok here, some have only 10 peeps in them and they give all 10 of them an executive position...Its really nothing to be proud of or an achievement that you were made Secretary or Treasurer of your 10 man team.  I'd reckon most of them are formed just to boost one's uber-ego or to make oneself seem semmingly important amongst the solitary 10 peeps.  LMAO  Even the ANA which boasts of a few thousand members only has these members come toghether during the July 4th convention...The rest of the year, the ANA in my mind ceases to exist.  In contrast, just a single entity: The Sherpa kyidug in the NYC has over 1,500 members itself (even the lowly Mustang and Manang Samaj has over 800 and 300 members respectively).  And these orgs are always doing an event every other weekend or month.  The activeness amongst the members here is truly geniune (also since most members are related or somehow they forcefully make themselves to be).  Where were these entities with such an ctive base in this meeting of the Nepalese Council??  hahahaha   A damn joke.  No matter what I see and read about organizations bringing about such meetings and debates for a better Nepal, its nothing but a farce to the greatest degree as the reps of the majority have been left out in the dark.

...Wow, I still can;t fathom that they have a Nepali Council in the US who organizes such an event inviting the 27 associations here, but they leave the biggest and the most active one out (HBA)?  Its a shame that though they did try and initiate an event that would try and help bring about the much needed change in Nepal, the largest voice ironically had been silenced.

Sam,

You're very true. My recent trip to Nepal was an eye opening to see how these Mustangese and the Managese organized with money. You walk every block, there a Gompa. The big ones are on the hills made with lavish money. No offence, the so called famous temples were getting worse on the other side. There's a strong communial help among each other too. I'm not surprised that they're so actively involved there in the NYC. And these 10 member organizations consider themself better than these Mustang/Manang. Personally,I'm getting sick and tired of these ANA,BNA,CNA and ANNNNNNA, all the craps.

Rewire, thanks for your analysis and even though I've seen and heard of the gompas being built all over Ktm (with mainly the money that is being sent from the US/Japan/UK and other developed nations) I'm not trynna say that the Manang, Mustang or Sherpa organizations are better in anyway but the fact is that these organizations represent thousands of Nepalis here in the US and for the Nepal Council to involve only the "yes-men" with meagre influence even in their home cities on the issues of "Reform in Nepal" is outright negligence on their part...

Not to blame the Nepal Council but our own peeps:  As far as I see it all boiling down to, it's education and the coming in terms with modern technology.  Most of the orgs we have (Mustang, Manang, Tamang, Yolmo, etc.) that represent the majority are still in a time-warp.  Hardly anyone has a website or some means of contact that someon could use to research and find more on them.  Another point is that they stick together as they do not know about other such happenings (because they are not informed of such events as per my earlier reason in the previous line).  And also, not enough is being done by the other organizations and educated majority (such as the Nepal Council, ANA and its likes) to get the Reps of these neglected orgnaizations involved.  I feel that its about time that the educated peeps within these neglected orgs take an active stance on this issue and use their influence to sway any motion in the Nepal Council meetings which is their democratic right as they too care about the precarious condition their motherland is in today!

On a financial note, these organizations have members who do a lot for their own community...In sajha it takes forever to raise $5K for someone deceased (even the deceased's local association or club is lifeless in this aspect)...But when someone of their community passes away, the neglected organizations raise $20K overnight!!  This was the case in the October 2007 tragedy when the Manang Samaj of NYC did that feat.  Also, The Sherpa Kyidug has raised $650K+ for their Sherpa Cultural Center in NYC.  The amazing fact is that this amount was all pledged in a year's time (that too only among the Sherpas in the US!!).  Even the people of lower Manang who numbered around 70 sent back around $90K for their gompas and to take care of their elderly peeps (these funds were collected within a few months back in 2004/2005)...Amazing ain't it!!  I don't see any reason why the vaious Nepali NGOs couldn't tap into this source for a change.

It takes money to help others in need and like you said the ANA and other such orgs have been a joke in that aspect even though they claim to have thousands of members.  I really think its about time the true voice of Nepalis in America should ring out and let all who don't know (or still ignore that fact) that we, the majority have finally arrived!!

BTW, apologies shirish.  The thread seems to have taken a life of its own now!
