I have been accepted for a PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences at University of Florida and also for the Molecular Biology Program at University of Utah. I was wondering if anyone of you could provide some insight on which one is better to attend.

Thanks.

I don't know anything about Utah. I can write some about UF.

its is ranked well, and engineering and medical school of here is considered very god. the school has a large number of students (>50000). the academics depends on department. some good ranked univ may not offer good education in all sector. so, i dont know the quality of biomedical but I assume it is very good coz of its newly established UFGI, cancer institute and one of the best hospital. for the social life, student services and environment / climate is great, U will never see snow. and more, athletic is great too, as a graduate student u do no involve on gthem but its fun too watch and be fan of good athlete team.

you cam mail me if you need any more info about UF

I am from Utah. One prof from  molecular biology program won Nobel Prize in 2007. So you can now compare those two deparments. There are Nepalese students  in molecular biology and you can ask with them.

I am aware of Mario Capecci who won the Nobel Prize. I also know quite some good faculty in Utah but I do not know too much about University of Florida - especially the Biomedical Sciences Department.

The Univ of Utah or U as its called by the SLC locals is a pretty huge and fine institution and I know a few neps who are in the ugrad program.  As for the sports part, the 2002 Winter Olympics had most of the events held there.  Also, the town is pretty laid back and the terrain reminded me of the Annapurna region of Nepal...I felt right at home.  To add, there is a Nepali restaurant smack in the town's main district and it really didn't feel like I was in a small city as that particular area has all the brand name stores, the financial district, the Delta Center (Utah Jazz' s home-court), malls and most of the car dealerships.  Similar to NYC (unlike other small hick towns), you can walk without being harassed.  BTW, Since I was on the verge of being transferred there from work earlier last year, I visited the U and took a campus tour and the whole nine yards (pertaining to transferring into the Econ dept for the Ph.D) but unfortunately things worked out in NYC and I'm still stuck here with my same ol life.  I'd say that in that particular region (Utah, Wyoming and the other small states surrounding it), the U degree garners a lotta respect as I've been told.

I know nothing about Univ of FL as I've never ever visited its campus' or the town.

All the best.

I lived in Utah for two years.  I'd prefer FL since it's more diverse.

?, I don't think Gainsville, FL would be more diverse than SLC.  Maybe Miami (which is 300 miles south of Gainsville) would be.  BTW, Drive down 300 miles just to be in the city?  Even the small city of Orlando is about a 100 miles from Gainsville...

Academically my advice will be to go to Utah.

Look at specific departments, faculty research and reputation. Its easy to get carried away with grad school ranking that you find in the webs but they do not provide correct measure of your department! Grad school is very different from undergraduate and specific area matters a lot more than university reputation (which is calculated from all availiable departments including performing art and languages). If you find, look at the ranking of specific programs. Here is what I found if it helps.( http://books.nap.edu/html/researchdoc/appendix_p.html )

Good luck!
