Friend of mine came to US on visitor visa and had to go to hospital to take care of bodily injury. Doctor end up performing small surgery and for sure the hospital bill came out to be over 20K. He does not have SS# and he is the only person listed in the bill.

Of course he does not have that kind of money and not sure what to deal with this situation. He is planning to go back to Nepal. Any suggestion what he can do?

Don't need to go to nepal for just this reason. There are millions of people in states that have huge medical bills not covered by insurance and yet they go along living there everyday life. I know a person who had 33k in medical bills and got pardon because there was absolutely no way he/she could pay that bill.

Pretty simple, Write a good thank you note to the hospital and let them know about his situation. They will waive it because there is no way they can collect it. If he does not write it the hospital may try to negotiate with collection agency, the collection agency will end up sending collection paper and will call your place ( if your phone number is provided).

1 hospital just closed in chicago for similar reasons.

It is the 410-bed hospital in Blue Island that nobody wants. Even for free.

In a stunning development underscoring the plight of non-profit hospitals struggling with the increase in uninsured patients, the Catholic ownership of St. Francis Hospital & Health Center on Wednesday said it will shutter the hospital because nobody would buy it.

Saddled with tens of millions of dollars in losses from uninsured patients who could not pay their medical bills, St. Francis would be abandoning its core mission of caring.

"Currently, one out of every two people who come to the emergency department and one out of four people who are admitted to the hospital either have no health insurance or are covered by Medicaid [insurance for the poor]" Ryan said. "No hospital can survive over the long term without being able to cover its costs."

The hospital lost $40 million since 2002 but was projected to lose $20 million this year alone.

City leaders were stunned, and worried about the economic impact from a looming loss of 1,400 jobs. "It came out of the clear blue sky," said Blue Island Mayor Donald Peloquin. "I never expected this."
