Friends,

I am thinking of buying a DVD recorder/player here in the US and sending it to Nepal.  Obviously, the issue of different voltage requirement is there (US uses 120V whereas Nepal uses 240V), but that can be mitigated by utilizing voltage converter.  What I am concerned about is the DVD formatting.  I understand Nepal falls under different DVD region, similar to NTSC vs. PAL scenario, which leads me to wonder whether this DVD recorder will actually work in Kathmandu.  Has any of you bought DVD recorder or DVR in the US and used it in Nepal?  If so, mind sharing your experience?

Thanks.

hey riten!
two things.

1) there are number of DVD players/ DVRs in the market which have built in NTC-PAL converter and are hence region free. you may want to consider these:

2) all DVD players shipped in the USA must be set to Region 1. it is not legal for the manufacturer to provide information or any other means of changing the region code to allow the playback of DVD's from other regions. there are DVD region code hack available for most of these DVD players available in the market (including Magnavox, although I am not too sure about the particular model you want to purchase as it's not clear from the picture). In any case, you may wanna look at sites where they give ways to hack DVD players region code to set them for any region. Here's one hack info, just search for your model.

here's one example for Magnavox MDV411

Region code hack posted by alfonso, November 16 2003:
Hello, I bought this one in Las Vegas NV, I live in Mexico, the manual of this player states that the only difference with model Magnavox MDV421SL is the component video output, no other differences according to manual, so I tried the current hack for MDV421 and worked fine:

with the remote control and the tray open press
9 9 9 9 and region code, for example region 4 press
9 9 9 9 4 and load the disc.

why send it all the way from the US when you can buy them in Nepal for much cheaper price. The Chinese made are cheaper but it works fine..
