The article on Nepalese Ambassador's visit to Northern California was very informative and a bit secretive (most nepalese were unaware of his vist). We all welcome his effort in providing a Consulate office in San Francisco, CA. The blunder in the article, as reported by Mr. Sajjan Pandey, is that Mr. Nabin Adhikari was pointed out as the President of NANC, who was one of the facilitators of Mr. ambassador's visit. The whole gaffe took place because the reporter seems to be unaware that the election for the NANC has been postponed into near future by the majority of Executive Committee (EXCOM). That decision was made on April 11, 2008.

The Bylaws of NANC and the Application forms handed out to the members self contradicted in terms of the membership validity. Hence the election for NANC was postponed. Election committee's formation is on the way and fresh election ,this time, without errors will take place pretty soon. Hence, all the Nepalese in SF Bay Area, please make sure your membership is valid and if you are new, fill in your application. All interested Candidates are welcome to run for the office. Good luck all.

Here is the meeting minute in detail :-

Nepal Association of Northern California (NANC)

Berkeley, California.

 III.             Discussion Items

1.      Financial Update

Treasurer Neela Blon notified that President Dikendra Maskay has still not collected the $400 that NANC was supposed to be reimbursed from the Himalayan Fair committee in 2006.

She also notified that $700 of sponsorship money to be obtained from Dhurba Shrestha has not been received. She mentioned that pledged money as such should be turned in a timely fashion but Dhurba Shrestha mentioned that since he is not employed by the agency any more, he will not be able to pay the money. Sher Lama, Neela Blon, and Khendu Lama objected to Dhurba Shrestha's remarks and suggested that the money should have been paid and should be paid. No further discussions were facilitated by Dhurba Shrestha.

 2.      Sports Update

Aashish Jha notified that the second annual NANC sports tournament was limited to basketball championship this year. Volleyball players boycotted this year's games because they were not content with last year's tournament and despite multiple emails and announcements sent via NANC emails, no football team registered for the annual tournament. The five teams were Fremont, Santa Rosa, Sacramento, East Palo Alto, and San Jose. San Jose defeated Fremont in the finals to win the championship for the second straight year.

The total income was $750 out of which $170 was contributed to purchase a perpetual trophy for Basketball championship that can be rotated up to 12 years (2007-2019 A.D.). The rest of the amount was used to compensate for the ANA 2007 expenses that were due in August 2007 as per the NANC ExCom's decision as of 01/2008.

Aashish Jha also notified that he personally contributed the remaining amount of $120 and now the ANA 2007 balance has been balanced.

IV     Action Items

1.      Elections

There was much discussion about the NANC election results.  Nima Sherpa, Dikendra Maskay, Arati Neopane, and Chandra Sherchan joined via telephone conference.

Dikendra Maskay notified that he stands by the decision made by the recent election commission that most members who filed for nominations were disqualified to run elections on the basis of expired membership according to the bylaws.

All (VP. Nima Sherpa,  Neela Blon, Chandra Sherchan, Yan Rai, Khendu Lama, Sher Lama, Aashish Jha, Dhurba Shrestha, Arati Neopane) ExCom members rejected the decision made by NANC appointed election commission.

The entire NANC ExCom with the exception of President Dikendra Maskay voted to reject the recommendation of the election commission because there was no time given to the candidates/members to renew their membership.

Since the membership form indicated that membership extended for two years but the bylaws indicated that the membership lasted only for one fiscal year NANC ExCom decided that this fact should have been mentioned to the candidates/members so that they could renew their membership.

NANC ExCom has appointed Yan Rai to handle all election related issues here onwards.  He is responsible for contacting all the individuals who have filed for nominations to inform them about this decision made by NANC ExCom then appoint a non-partisan election commission to conduct elections at an appropriate venue, date, and time with the consensus of all individuals who have filed for nominations. He is also responsible to oversee that elections are conducted in fair and just manner on the Election Day.

 V      Meeting adjourned: 8:00 pm.

 Missing part:

1.  Excom members decided all current members are valid until December 31st, 2008

       2.  From now, new member will be valid for a year and corrected application form will be distribute for new members who would like to participate for the election.
