Second, @ The New School

The preliminary results of the Constituent Elections in Nepal have shown unequivocally that the people have given a strong mandate to the Maoists to make bold changes for the future of Nepal. Amidst results that are still being finalized, critical questions arise for those living in or working on Nepal. What type of Federalism will the Maoists help bring about? How will the aspirations of marginalized communities for inclusive democracy become a reality? With these questions at the forefront of the global community, the "Democracy and Development Initiative in Nepal" at India China Institute, The New School, in partnership with Nepali organizations (below - list of organizations) is pleased to invite you to a talk on :

"Vision for a New Nepal: A Maoist Perspective" by Mr. Dev Prasad Gurung,
Minister for Local Development and a senior member of Central Committee of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist)

Mr. Dev Gurung won election from two constituencies during the election for constituent assembly held on April 10, 2008. He is also the co-chair of the Nepal Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities (NFDIN).

Date and Time: Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008; 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Venue: Theresa Lang Student & Community Center, 55 West 13th Street (corner of 6th Avenue).
Seating is limited.

Refreshments will be served.

The Event is being organized in partnership with the following Nepal related organizations:

- Alliance for Democracy & Human Rights in Nepal
- America Nepal Friendship Society
- Association of Nepali Tarain in America
- Federation of Indigenous Peoples of Nepal in America (15 Janajati organizations)
- United Nepalese Democratic Forum

With the conclusion of Nepal’s historic Constituent Assembly election on April 10th, the country has turned a new page in its political history.  Twice postponed, this first nationwide election in nearly a decade was marred with intimidation, violence, and skirmishes amongst members of rival political parties.  The focus has now shifted to the newly elected members of the Assembly, who will begin the process of drafting the new Constitution in earnest.  Judging by the election frenzy and the level of participation, much hope rests on the ability of the Constituent Assembly to encompass the disparate expectations and aspirations of Nepal’s diverse communities in shaping a New Nepal, the current buzzword debated widely across the country.  What is the New Nepal and what are its contours? Will the Constituent Assembly be able to capture the imaginations of the ordinary Nepalis?  What are the key challenges for building an inclusive, democratic, peaceful, and prosperous Nepal?  Please join us to discuss these and other pertinent issues.

Mr. Dev Gurung who represented the Maobadis and won from Manang is here??  Damn, that was quick!  Is he gonna return home after the event or does he plan on stealing democracy here too?  How on earth do these cats get a chance to come here and preach their BS?
BTW, Poonte hope alls good on your end.  Enjoy
