Why we need Nepal as a Hindu country?
  • In Nepal, Hindu religion has never influenced the legal system like in Christianity or in Islam; it is more a ritual practice which doesn't impose others to follow the same. No fundamentalism was ever get encouraged in Nepal. It remained Sanatan Dharma.

  • No rules from Dharmashastra as in Islam have ever come into force.

  • If you see UK, USA and many other developed countries, they revere their religion (Christianity) in national level (see US constitution). They take oath of Bible while getting into office. But have you seen anyone in Nepal taking oath of Gita? It is such a liberal practice in Nepal: it could have been made taking into account that there are multi-ethnic, religious people in Nepal.

  • Hinduism as practice in India and Nepal are different. Nepal's is much unique that accommodates all. In Nepal, it is ritual based, not a doctrine based. The Gurung, Magar, Rai and other communities who are said to be non-Hindu Janajatis also celebrate Dashain but not as a compulsion. But do they celebrate Id-Ul-Fitra just because they are living in Arghakhachi or Nepalgunj? or can Muslims celebrate Dashain as Gurungs do? If anyone questions: Rai and Limbus celebrate Dashain because of Hindu's pressure, thats never the case in Nepal. Is any Newar Buddist barred from visiting Pashupatinath? whereas a Muslim is barred or a Christian is barred, because without doing so, they could not be controlled in the wave of proselytizing in the past. My point is Nepal's Hindu practice is ritual based, not a doctrine based.

  • As we see, the Hindu population in Nepal is decreasing due to Christianity they have missionaries to change religion, but do we ever think to change other's religion? Have you ever done that? But ask a Muslim and you will get answer about how many non-Muslims has s/he already converted into Muslim. same in Christianity.

  • Early in its history, in the absence of other competing religions, Hindus considered everyone they came across as Hindus (Sanathan Dharm) and expected everyone they met to be Hindus. Hindus have never done business of religion. Hindu view of religious freedom is not based on the freedom to proselytize, but the right to retain one’s religion and not be subject to proselyzation. Don't we have the right to protect our religion from being proselytized?
  • since we don't believe on conversion of other's religion but others (such as Muslims and Christians) do and they are financially better off, we are always vulnerable to sell our faith (as is seen in remote villages of Nepal), Should a state do justice to Hindus who are 83% in protecting their religion or should it be a witness to a rampant annihilation upon Hindus by Christians in the name of religious freedom and secularism?

  • If Hindus were intolerant and suppressive of other minorities of Nepal, how could Muslims in Kathmandu remain safe and secured, up keeping their religious freedom in the heartland of Hindus for more than 200 or so years? If Hindus were suppressive, they could have swept Muslims' identity into dust. Did they do that? And again, it is not wise to compare the Hindu Muslim politics of India with Nepal. Nepal's is an exemplary case of religious harmony which was possible due to its being a Sanatan Hindu state.

That's the problem. Designating one religion gives too much opportunity to one group. As it always turns out, that person/group abuses power at the expense of others. Castism, discrimation and inequality are the byproducts of power of one person/group. Instead declaring secularism gives equal footing to everyone and promotes peace and equal opportunity.  I believe it is time we all move forward as a Nepali and build better Nepal. Whether physically, mentally or financially, everyone has suffered enough.

Yesterday is history...Naya Nepal is what we need to look forwad to.

sarkozy,
mula "ghanta" ko lets get united? BEEF burger khayera motayeko baun moro! btw I am hindu also but I do eat beef. You should be given choice of animal you can eat, no discrimination on animals based on the species. If you see worldwide only dictator nations are afraid of making their country secular. Peace.

191karma,

I understand what you mean but you know the problem is there: making Nepal a secular is jeaopardy to our culture. Since we are weaker to compete financially with missionaries' millions of dollars in proselytising efforts in Nepal, the secularism doesn't do according to what you say as providing a free space to operate all the religions together. What happens in the long run is: we get uprooted, and our culture gets frozen in the histroy. Its good to allow all the religions but that is to seen in relative sense. Are we well enough to fund as do Christian missionaries now? Are our folks well-educated not to get influenced of their enticing offers while choosing their religion according to their self-will? These are the reasons I see come as hurdle in hurriedly declaring Nepal a secular state. In fact, I know that secularism is a form of democracy and it should be practised but in an ideal state where all the citizens are well educated and financially better off. I respect you guys' concern towards aloowing all religions a due place to operate their activities but the fundamental problem is of ideology:  they want proselytisation usiing all the measures: economic, diplomatic and many other state aparatuses but Hindus don't have such programs like proselytisation. You guys are well informed of the facts but lack a serious critical dimension on these issues: especially from the perspective of politics and ideology.

I expect some good thoughts than cheap rantings in this thread (such as Awatar. Grow up Awatar!. U sound like an offspring of Maoists' broken condom while having Comredly sex in the Jungle. I know what comrades say: Haami krantikari haru cheli sanga ratvari eutai ochhyaan ma sutchhau tara kehi gardainau.  Beef khana ta timra  ....le Rolpa ko jungle mai sikayeka holan ni. Now the Maoists have already said that they are removing all the Hindu and Buddhist traditional cultures of Nepal including "Kumari" relating them to have associated with the Monarchy. They are preparing to bring the situation of Tibet after Mao-tse-Tung and his cultural relvolution attempted to sweep away the identity of Tibet and Buddhism.

Let us all the Hindu and Buddhist of Nepal get united to fight against Maoists and save our culture and religion.

Sarkozy, would you have appealed to fight against Maoists, if they had decided to remove just the churches and mosques?

Yes of course I would. Hindus have never removed Churches and Mosques which are in Nepal. Our only concern with the Christians is regarding their proselytizing drive. It is because we don't do that and if we allow them to do, ultimately we will be prone to get removed from our culture. That is only the concern with Christians and Muslims. If they don't practice proselytisation with the help of their millions of dollar, we are happy to live with them in Nepal. They can practice their religion as long as they don't snatch Hindus' traditional values with the Western and non-Sanatan Dharma culture.

Garibkochhora and Jhareko paat: you kids are still to grow and learn. Before showing up here with bullshit  arguments of non-sense meaning, please have some knowledge of how cultural politics is working in the world, and how much concerned are the Western countries towards their cultures and religion, despite having their  advancement on science and technology. Just don't make cheap remarks on the basis of your fuc--n aerial knowledge based on Fox and CNN news channel and You-Tube. Grow up guys. Have some orientation towards where you relate and just don't live in a hallucination of Western media, cultural products and education. Try to see things critically dudes.

Hey, I am not for or against what the Maoists are doing. I don't even like the Maoists. And just because some disillusioned evangelists try to convert Nepalese people in return for financial help does not mean that all Nepalese Christians are like that. Most of us believe in peaceful coexistence.

In every religion, there are some people who give a wrong twist to the original religion. Take for example, the caste system in Hindu religion which was not an integral part of Hinduism in the beginning. People were divided into four classes (Varnas) in the Vedic era but that did not depend on the parentage but on what they did for a living. It was only later that sociopolitical change within the Hindu society made caste system into a hereditary thing.  In Christianity too we have a lot of zealots who give a distorted meaning to the teachings of the Bible. I don't believe in evangelism which has a sole purpose of converting people into Christianity. A true evangelist spreads love and understanding and caring equally among Christians and non-Christians without discrimination and without any expectations in return. When Jesus helped and healed he did not discriminate whether they were Jews, Romans or other people. He did not demand that they become his followers before he healed them. Islam does not teach to launch a war against the "infidels".

Having said that, we believe that a government and the state should not be affiliated to any particular religion. Even in a secular state of Nepal, Hindus and Buddhists will still be very dominant in the society. Nothing is going to change that. Just because Nepal becomes secular, Christmas and Id-ul-Fitr is not going to be bigger than Dashain and Buddha Jayanti. So, you need to see the bigger picture, have more faith in the strength of your own religion and stop feeling threatened by the minorities.

Sarkozy:
You facts are all wrong. Under present constitution, churches are not allowed to be even made in Nepal. All the churches today in Nepal are under people's name as private property. The church i used to go is under a group of people's name and church as an institution is not allowed to be formed in Nepal first of all.

Also, when you pride yourself so much about your culture and heritage and at the same time fear that people will leave everything, their culture, identity and all for money? Would you convert if i give you some money? That's what you seem to be implying here. Learn to respect other's religion and respect their roots then people will automatically respect you and your religion.

I am a Christian and and i understand my roots and for me it does not matter whether the country is Hindu or secular, whether we are majority or minority. Christianity is all about faith and i know what i believe in and nothing can change that for me.

Jharekopaat, Christians believe in religious co-existence - really???

Jharekopaat,

I applaud your recent comment. It sounds great!

Sheetalb,

I don't think Nepal still bans (after house declaration 2 years ago on secularism) on the Christianity and buliding up of the churches. If the state actually banned, it should have been illegal way back. I support that they should be allowed. But my take on the entire posting is that as long as the Evangelists and Mulsims are driving their proselytizing efforts (in converting others' religion with various means--power, money, and enticements, and which is a reality as well) Nepal should remain a Hindu state to protect the culture of her majority of citizens, but still should allow others to operate their religious functionaries as long as they guarantee that they don't convert others by external means.

In your next question: I would not convert myself because I think I am educated and financially better off than most of our folks in the remote villages. But all are not necessarily like me. Those poor people who are illiterate and are living in abject poverty might convert if an evangelist comes and offers them a handful of amount or enticement or threat or any other means. I would appreciate every christians living in Nepal if they had had belief like yours: "Christianity is all about faith", but the irony is that your so called "Tycoon Exporters" and sponsors of "Religion" are exporting faith in the way that McDonnald expotrts franchise! Are you aware of that? Do you believe that Faith can be exported like BigMac?
