Hello all, I have MS degree from a US university. I joined PhD in another US university immediately afterwards. It made me ineleigible for OPT. I am in Kathmandu now. I think my only option is to find a job that sponsors H1-B directly, is it? If that is the case please let me know how and where to look for jobs from Nepal. I do not want to join Ph.D. again. Just get any job and pay off my student loans. Thanks bkb

Worst cases:
1. Find an indian consultancy. They will gladly file for your H1-B next year.
2. I dont know what your major is but I've heard it has taken 5 years for some to get a PhD. Your credit history starts from scratch in 7. So u can always come back and continue with your PhD and nevermind the student loans. After having a PhD in hand, 2 years without good credit wont hurt much.

There might be more to your story but moral issues aside I'd say go with option 2.

BKB,

What field do you belong to or what is you MS degree in??? Looks like you only joined the PhD program but did not complete it. I think an employeer sponsoring you an H1B directly seems to be the best or the only option for you. To be able to find such an employer, as you might also know, is not that easy but too hard either. It depends on your field/major, your profesional work experience in your related field, and how you apply. Also, your dedication. I would think you have two ways to apply. Apply directly to the related company or apply through related recruiters. I am not sure what field you belong to, but for example, anyone with a Science major would look for something like "scientific recruiters" and these scientific recruiters would ave more jobs or employment options for you. Similarly, accounting majors would look for "financial recruiters" or "accounting/business recuiters" and so on. Make your resume look good and impresive and more than a page and include as many experiences and awards, recogs as possible. I bet you already know all these tips. There are also online recuiters like Monster, Career Builders, Manpower professionals etc. Apply with them also.

If you can't find any responsewith these recruiters, joining PhD is not a bad option either. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

For Environmental Engineering profession, check out these major companies of US - CH2M HILL, HDR, CDM. These companies should have something. Right now Water Resources Engineers are in demand, but i am not sure what was your concentration. Also i suggest you to contact AEROTEK which is a kinda lubricant agancy which would match your resume and try to find a potential employer for you.

Best of Luck

Thanks KillEmAll, HappyFace and Poon-Hill, I have been applying to companies through job websites. HF I thought they say resume should be fit in a page. KillEm how/where to find Indian Consultancy? Advantages/Disadvantages? My student loan is co-signed so there is no running away from it. I am not too much worried about credit score. Poon-Hill Thanks for company list. That's what I found are the major employers. Towards the end of my MS I was applying for job and PhD at the same time. Got PhD first, however, things did not work out well, I guess.

The best option i see for you to come back to usa or canada as a phd student and look for job after that.  you can also apply canadian PR after arriving here.  as you said you can not run away from the loan, only option i see is to come back agian here.  trust me, once you are here, it will be lot easier.  being in nepal and looking for a job is 1000 times harder than finding a job from here.  apply for spring and come to usa or go to canada.  this is the best suggestion i have for you.

BKB,

I donot want to disappoint you but the fact is us economy is slowing down and job in civil engineering is also slowing down. Unless you have really good connection in some engineering firms, you will not get job residing in Nepal. If you come US even in student visa, you will have opportunity to join Indian IT Consultancies for a while and find a job in your area.

The consultancies which poonhill suggested are really big companies. They have lots of processing before real interview. If they know u r looking for a job from Nepal they will not put you even in contact list.

The best option for you is asking Dhoti Bhaiya's IT consultancy for H1B from Nepal or come here in student visa and find job in your related field.

By the way, you can check companies who sponsor international students in this site.

AAAA: I actually did come back to USA for the same purpose in the same university (I went to ktm to release some tension). I had already told my advisor I do not need your funding. I approved 1-3 credit hrs semester from student health center and grad school. My PLAN was I will hav 1 semester and summer to look for jobs. It is good to know that did was a practical plan. However, few small hicuups was enough to scare me.

In any case I will keep on applying online to matching jobs. I will give it some time b4 I apply for PhD again. I have doubt anyone would want to accept a student who have not finished their PhD earlier.

Lyrics: Ya they are saying US economy might go into recession, aren't they?

Thanks.

Finding an Indian consultancy:
Post your resume on dice.com. Make it pretty apparent you are from around south east Asia. They will start calling/emailing you like there is no tomorrow. They will file for your H1-b for next year since you have already missed this year's April 1st deadline.
When you get here they will train you in whatever field you wanna get trained in.. QA, BA, software developer etc. Most provide for free accommodation and nominal monthly/fortnightly allowance, However, don't be too excited about it.. its almost guaranteed the living conditions will suck!
Advantages: They will file for your H1-b and will help you find a job even if you are in Nepal.
Disadvantages: Well you'll be dealing with Indians. Need I elaborate?
Start a new thread on sajha to ask guys about good consultancies. Im sure it will help you make a better decision if you do decide to go with this option. Best of luck bud!
