Although I am not rajabadi, but I think we need to have some kind of ceremonial KING, just to continue our culture.

Now our NEPAL is secular state, so it can't endorse any religion, so how it can support our long cultural history.
I afraid that now we will lose the privilege for knowing as country of living goddess 'KUMARI'

Nepal's 'living goddess' in limbo
By Charles Haviland
BBC News, Kathmandu

The previous goddess, Sajani Shakya, retired in March. The appointment of a new "living goddess" in Nepal is being held up by the recent abolition of the monarchy, a Nepalese official says. According to tradition, the king's priest appoints the girl, who is chosen in her infancy and is treated as a goddess, or Kumari, until puberty.

But the priest no longer has any say in the republic, the head of the trust overseeing the tradition says. Hindus and Buddhists regard the Kumaris as incarnations of a deity.

Shria Badrucharia, 6, has been selected by a religious panel as the "living goddess" in the town of Bhaktapur, near the capital Kathmandu. She was chosen to replace the previous goddess who retired early in March. Under the ancient tradition, she has to have certain physical attributes and undergo special tests to be selected. But the head of the trust overseeing the Kumari tradition told the BBC that because Nepal is now a republic that priest no longer has any role in the matter. He said the chairman of the trust's board would have to decide soon who would approve the new living goddess.

This quandary is just one of many set to arise now that the politicians have abolished the monarchy without thinking though the religious or political implications.

It is unthinkable that this deeply religious country would scrap the rich series of traditions and festivals which pepper the people's lives and are also a magnet for tourists.

Yet many traditions are associated with the king and may face adjustments in future.

Nepal is now supposed to be a secular state but for the past two years the elderly Prime Minister, Girija Prasad Koirala, has been trying to take on the king's religious roles with a stream of temple visits.

A few months ago the prime minister was said to be angered when the royal priest refused to give a blessing.

The biggest elected party, the Maoists, are fiercely non-religious.

However, the party's deputy leader was blessed by a priest at the start of his election campaign.

No, we don't need more d.i.kheads in Nepal. We have enough of them already... I think the poster of this thread needs to move on just like his boss is going to.

I am really suprised to see some comments, I am saying you guys I am not royalist, but I am always proud to call myself as NEPALI. I dont give damn who who was the king or who were the supporters. Yeah there were times when you call yourself as true Nepali, then you were branded as Royalist.

Hey guys, just be proud what you have, I think u guys are MORON who are saying what jataras and our culture has given to us??

if you dont have respect your culture and tradition ?? Then what if one day one indian come to you and ask okay guys u are following our movies, our serials, share simillar taste for foods and blindly celebrate all western festival as we do, then what is the benifit of calling as your country as seprate country, why you be part of india. That day you may realize your what is your TRADITION, CULTURE AND IDENTITY. these things makes what you are called as NEPALI
.

HERE other guys like AX are fighting by calling as this is jyapu's jatra. dude I am not newar, I am bramin and born and raise in ktm  (good to say inner ktm ) and always have respect for all their festival either its KUMARI or jatras or Yomari prune or shiti nakha.

And I am telling specially you that the purohit of all bigest temple of devi worshiped during a DASHAIN in KTM PATAN or DAKHIN KALI or MANAKAMANA are either NEWARS or MAGARS. Dude try to repsect other religons too

We do not need Shah kings to continue our culture.

Our Culture was there long time before Shah came to Kathmandu

and attacked innocent people in Kumari Festival with seven Bharuwa Baduks.

We do not need Ceromonial Shah kings.

We do not have to stop Kumari just beacause Gyanendra is kicked from his GADDI.

We have many ceromonial kings from Mallas Dynasty in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan.

We can find them very easily..

We do not need any Bhandar-Khaal Parba, Kot-Parba, Narayanhity-Parba again.

Kumari was there before 240 years, before shahs knew there was something outside gorkha. Kumari was there in malla dynasty but they were not selected by king but has to follow certain process. But Shah's came to kathmandu and started selecting kumari's. But Kumari was there before their existance and will be there after their existance. Kumari has nothing to do with shah's.

Gyanendra has every right to go participate in selecting a new Kumari, regardless of abolition of monarchy in Nepal.  He's a private citizen of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, as are the Kumari guthi members.

If Pushpey and his stooges don't like it, tough.

If the guthi chooses to invite a private citizen to their private event, that's their private business and nobody else's.

religion, culture, and traditions are the things that sets Nepal apart from rest of the world and creates our unique identify. They are not related or affiliated or entitled to a certain group and certainly not to any political establishment. They belong to all the Nepalese people who observe them and practice them. We know that in many of our Nepalese traditions and rituals, Monarchs--being Hindu Kings--have played vital roles. Now, even with the Monarchy gone, all the culture and traditions should continue to be followed. They set our identities; if we are so keen on forgetting them, might as well one day forget ourselves.

No matter where we live and how successful we become, we should not ever forget our identity. If we do that, we will forget ourselves!

sayami bro,

why are you sooooooooo against the Shah Kings????? Chill out--they are gone now. i have not seen you write against the Maoists who are responsible for the kilings of more than 15,000 Nepalese people. The Shah Kings were saints as compared to the blood loving Maoists.

whether or not removing the Monarchy from Nepal was a good decision, history will be the best judge to that..for now, only hope that the Maoists will not turn Nepal into a communist republic.

do yourself a favor--don't get stressed out so much and think abt something other than the former Kings of Nepal.

and culture and identity has been a less important issue for neplese.

Well accept the change, if our country will be good in future due to this stupid change, well we must agree to give
up the "KUMARI" and Hindu Kingdom....
So please now dont stick yo self on these minor Kumari and indra jatra and THink Broad.

if Nepal is going to be a better country because of the Maoists and the change they claim to bring, that is worth every thing and is even greater than our culture, identity and anything else. But are the Maoists going to take the country towards prosperity, democracy, and freedom???? this is really a doubt.

if there is starvation in Nepal, who is mainly responsible for that??? Ofcourse the Maoists, then come the political parties, and the King---but surely not the tradition or culture.

If the cultures, traditions etc are for ALL Nepalis to treasure, how come whatever happens to Kumari does not really affect me and my Paschim_Pahadi communities? Has the Ktm elite ever given a rats ass about my cultures, traditions....? Legalized anarchy, anyone?

_x

Ok. What about religious king rather than a ceremonial king? I am sure there are many people in Nepal that want king to do the religious duty. So why not keep a religious king.

Like many Nepalese in Nepal, the guys/gals in sajha also are getting brainwashed by maoists and ready to give up our culture, our identity and our religion. I agree that bad practices like sati pratha should be removed and are better gone, but that does not mean we should turn ourselves into someone without identity, culture and religion. I support republic but I just hope communist republic will not prevail.

I love our Nepalese tradition culture and our History.AND we should preserve it for ever and ever loosing it would be a shame ...our whole identity depends on it......But ............For the sake of GOD.......... We worship almost everything....from cow dung and piss to grass, trees, snakes, dogs monkeys houses, food to everything. Our gods outnumbers the population of Nepal YET our country is not blessed by the gods we worship with prosperity WHY???...because Gods are against materialistic gains, I mean thats what I think............. For Gods all its all about spiritual gains. FROM Now Money and development should be Nepals GOD. So to be "politically" correct...Teach the old traditions in schools and stuff BUT...lets have the most minimum public holidays....I mean less religious holidays. So we all can be productive. Just a few selected holidays and rest working days for developement. LOL what the heck..... looking at all the holidays Nepalese enjoys in the name of tradition just doesnt make sense. Cutting hilidays and increasing working days will bring more money everywhere and Nepal will be one of the richest country in Asia...........Lets al be PRODUCTIVE and not look for the lazy holidays that plauge our Nation in the name of tradition and religion.

I still Hate the MAOISTS and the political leaders.....with passion
