The reason why Prachanda had to attack NC and UML within a week of announcement of making Nepal a republic has nothing to do with the NC or UML or their demand that the Maoists amass the necessary support or show some humility before staking their claim to the government. The reason why NC has to be isolated now similarly has nothing to do with the NC or Girijababu themselves, as Girijababu neither campaigned for NC, nor was his job performance in terms of executing smooth transition from monarchy to republic was blemished. It has to do with the inherent nature of all revolutionaries.

The problem with the supporters of Maoism or Marxism is that it is futile to expect any rational answers from them. Rebels following Maoism and Marxism everywhere are often recruited from schools or have joined the party after their failure in almost everything they attempted. As Pasternak put it in Dr Zhivago, happy people don't join the revolution. The desperados who join the revolution have rarely any time to stop and think about the feasibility of their principle. Their worldview is guided by certainty of belief, rather than logical insight. In their view, therefore, they are certain, they have clarity of view, and the rest are uncertain, wavering and pusillanimous creatures. They know the answer of all questions, while other search for it. Therefore they have scant respect for those who disagree with them, because at the minimum, those dissenters don't even have any answers. Given their background and training, however, it is self fulfilling prophecy to call these people dullard.

Revolution is like a proverbial snake that starts eating its own body starting from the tail, and stops only when it eats its own head. The revolutionaries always need enemies, and once they go out looking for enemies they will always find them, just like the clichéd witch hunters of medieval era who always found the witch in the village once they were certain that there was a witch. The Maoists in China first fought against the king, when the king was gone, they fought against Kuomintag, then they fought against the intellectuals during the great leap forward. When all the opponents outside the party were finished, they attacked their own president Liu Shaoqi as capitalist roader, and then they attacked peasants, and educated class. When the red guards needed enemies they found them everywhere. In their pursuit of clean and pure society, they purged the society of all kinds of elements and managed to throw China into topsy-turvy for decades. In Nepal too, it was only expected that Prachanda and his brigand would find new enemies after the king. As Trotsky said in his theory of permanent revolution, the revolution shouldn't stop, and therefore you have to find a new enemy all the time.

In academy award winning movie Cabaret, the baron Maximilan Von Heune of German Weimar Republic says the German aristocrats could control the Nazis anytime they want, but they were letting them free because they were helping the aristocrats by crushing the communists. Same illusion seemed to have misled royalists of Nepal in the past, who helped the Maoists because of their help in crushing the democrats. That has failed. Now there is a group of foreign powers and KTM based intelligentsia which can't wait to see the Maoists ascend to the power, because they think the taste of power will temper the Maoists. Even when a Maoist was taken from Kathmandu and brutally murdered by the fellow Maoists, even when Prachanda is threatening the press and opposition from open space, few are willing to ask him tough questions.

Girijababu is rightly grilled when he appoints his daughter to a plum position. However, people seemed to be oblivious of Prachanda's inherent nepotism. His daughter is in the parliament now. His son heads his security detail. One wonders how come comrade Prachanda didn't trust anyone else in his PLA brigade? Those kids he recruited from the school were ready to die for him in his bank robberies and foolish attack on police posts, and now suddenly they are not reliable for the comrade's security? It reminds us the nature of another mustachioed fake revolutionary from Georgia-Stalin. Stalin had a mantra: never trust anyone for your security. Mao followed his suggestion. Are we retro-stepping to the same world of conspiracy and distrust? And where are the media? Imagine the hue and cry that would have ensued if Girijababu had appointed Sashanka Koirala as his security detail chief. Are we now not closer to Juddha Shamser era when Nara Shamsher was his hajuriya colonel and Bahadur Shamsher was his trusted envoy to Britain?

Girijababu did his job superbly this time. He conducted election fairly. He brought us so far peacefully. Imagine the bloods averted in our transition from monarchy to republic. The old man tolerated capricious minister like Matrika. And now ingrate comrades want to reward him by dumping him midway. Their lack of belief on rules is evident from their claim that a ceremonial president Girija would never really be ceremonial. They look at a person, and fear his aura. A man, so commandeering, so effective, so popular, so indomitable, can't be at the helm ceremonially. A nascent republic, in their opinion, requires an unrestrained ragtag army, a frail president, and emasculated opposition to grow into a full-fledged democracy. That's a mighty deception.
