Thought some of you might find this to be of interest. I had heard of Starbucks over Dunkin, Walmart over Target, beer vs wine, but this example of niche polling is even more interesting. Ha! (as Chris Matthews would say)

Poll: Pet owners prefer McCain over Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) — If the presidential election goes to the dogs, John McCain is looking like best in show.

From George Washington's foxhound Drunkard to George W. Bush's terriers Barney and Miss Beazley, pets are a longtime presidential tradition for which the presumed Republican nominee seems well prepared, with more than a dozen.

Democratic candidate Barack Obama, on the other hand, doesn't have a pet at home, although he has promised his daughters a dog after the election, win or lose.

The pet-owning public seems to have noticed the difference.

An AP-Yahoo News poll found that pet owners favor McCain over Obama 42 percent to 37 percent, with dog owners particularly in McCain's corner.

"I think a person who owns a pet is a more compassionate person — caring, giving, trustworthy. I like pet owners," said Janet Taylor of Plymouth, Mass.

Taylor, who described herself as a retired stay-at-home wife, owns two cats, Lady Jane Taylor and Mr. Tommy Katz.

Richard Powell, 79, of Spokane, Wash., whose dog passed away last fall, said if a person owns a pet, that "tells you that they're responsible at least for something, for the care of something."

He said pet ownership wouldn't make a difference in his vote, but if a president owns a pet, then "I'm glad to know they like animals."

American Kennel Club spokeswoman Christina Duffney said, "You usually connect with things that you're familiar with, so that could be a part of" why pet owners lean toward McCain.

Well, if voters identify with a guy who owns pets, it's easy to see why they'd like the Arizona senator.

He has a veritable menagerie, including Sam the English springer spaniel, Coco the mutt, turtles Cuff and Link, Oreo the black and white cat, a ferret, three parakeets and a bunch of saltwater fish.

The poll found that among people who don't have pets, Obama leads McCain 48 percent to 34 percent.

But that still leaves McCain looking strong, since the majority of homes have a pet.

The American Pet Product Manufacturers Association estimates that 63 percent of American homes include a pet, including 88 million cats and 75 million dogs.

Dog owners lean toward McCain, 43 percent to 34 percent, while cat owners basically divide their loyalties with 41 percent for McCain and 38 percent for Obama.

The population breakdown of who has pets and who doesn't may be a factor.

For example, the poll found 47 percent of whites own dogs, compared with just 24 percent of blacks. Whites tend to favor McCain, while blacks overwhelmingly favor Obama.

Some 64 percent of dog owners are married, slightly higher than the overall population. The poll found 47 percent of married people own dogs, compared with 39 percent of non-married people. Married people tend to favor McCain.

The AP-Yahoo News poll is part of an ongoing study that tracks the attitudes and opinions of a group of more than 2,000 Americans to see how their political views evolve over the course of the election campaign.

The AP-Yahoo News survey of 1,759 adults was conducted from June 13-23 and had an overall margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points. The margin of sampling error for population subgroups is larger.

The poll was conducted over the Internet by Knowledge Networks, which initially contacted people using traditional telephone polling methods and followed with online interviews. People chosen for the study who had no Internet access were given it free.

Associated Press Director of Surveys Trevor Tompson and AP Writer Natasha Metzler in Washington contributed to this report.

LooteKukur, MadDoGG and elusivecat can all start volunteering for the McCain campaign pronto!

The line below shows how sentimental and stupid people can get at times...Doesn't Obama have kids?  Why even talk about "responsible" and taking "care of something" when Obama is doing the same with his kids?  Just goes to show how much peeps value their pets over their siblings/kids/family.

Richard Powell, 79, of Spokane, Wash., whose dog passed away last fall, said if a person owns a pet, that "tells you that they're responsible at least for something, for the care of something."

He he Samsara.

"Just goes to show how much peeps value their pets over their siblings/kids/family."

I might have an explanation for that: your dog sits when you tell it to, rolls when you tell it to, stops barking when you tell it to. The same cannot be said of your husband, wife or kids

I happened to watch Animal Precinct on Animal Planet last week. I was held aghast to learn that there are 6 million pets for 8 million peeps in NYC. And of course you hear/read about these pets getting sedentary lifestyle diseases like diabetes and heart ailments. By Jove, these pet animals in developed countries lead far more luxurious lives than actual human beings in third world countries though it is kinda corny to mention.

Now that the truth is out, the campaign committees of either presumptive nominees need to cover that significant pool of voters too.

Good news for the Maverick who has persevered through so many Presidential bids.

'Seems like Gekko's words did not go unheeded
"And if you need a friend, get a dog (implies a pet other than a dog as well).

HAHAHA  Haddock, tru dat...However, since pets have a limited life-span so its without a shade of doubt that in the distant future, once robots become mainstream, all dogs and cats will be a part of the zoo or classifed amongst the "exotic" species. ..Would hate to see them served on the dining table in one of the local Chinese eateries around town.

Heard this somewhere about the Chinese:

Chinese eat anything with 4 legs except the dining table...Also anything that flies is not spared being cast into the pan (except for an aeroplane).

Hyde, smart man that Gekko was (A Queens college boy living it up with the Harvard cats who he says were now sucking on his kneecaps!).  The lines in that movie were the best ever...A well-deserved Oscar for the dude!!

Samsara!
Gekko's character and performance was as the invincible as I would imagine of Alexander, the Great himself.
Well deserved trophy for Michael Douglas but I think Zeta Jones is still the better trophy.

I am a big fan of Oliver Stone movies. 'Can't wait for the Wallstreet sequel but I heard Oliver is not going to be so much involved in the project. Too bad.

Hyde, the new Wall Street movie would be based in London though...London is slowly surpassing NYC as the Financail Capital of the World as they're getting more of the funds from the emergining markets (and also an agressive growth in the derivatives side) whereas NYC has remained as traditional as ever mainly targetting weath already in the US itself).  Also, times have changed since the 80s' days of a single manned tradtitional Private Equity Firm like Gecko had which only dealt in mergers and hostile bids..Today its all about large scale leverages and indepth modification of the Black Scholes to fit ever structured/exotic/vanilla option product out there and risks quantified to unimaginable standards...Oliver Stone would just go mad doing all the research for this!   He was lucky his dad was a stock-broker in Wall Street when he made the movie in 1986...Today, the REAL Wall Street has morphed into what the UK boys are doing in terms of innovation of financial derivative products and structured options.  Was a good choice for him to stay out even though I am a fan of his works.  The previous Wall Street is my fav movie of all time including The Doors.  Great movies!!

Hey Mr Hyde -

How's it going? I guess pet life is treated at par with human life in the West (and affluent sections of the developing world) and a notch below human life amongst the less affluent in the world who are struggling to make their ends meet and could care less about an animal's life. Like many other needs and wants, I suppose this too boils down to  Maslow's theory in the end.

Samsara -

I don't recalling watching Wall Street but might check it out once I re-activate my long expired Netflix account. The Doors movie  remains an all-time  favorite of mine too. :)

Later.
