Ok, you guys can have your midgets.  I'll take Saurav every time.  4 ANA Championships in 6 years and 3 MVPs?  Wake me up when those midgets have won even 1 ANA title.

Oh, and the statement that DH only wins b/c of their size??  Well, Outsidaz, you said the Giant from DH was "slow and lazy" and now you're saying they only win because of their size??  You can't have it both ways.

I can't believe we're having this conversation.  Trick shots over winning?????  That's why b-ball in this country is going to hell.....

IMO, the best players were Bipin (from Boston...met him in Mad City last wkend as he's currently playing the Tibetan tournament there.  Like me, that cat seems to be everywhere), Sonam (NYNYC...a collegiate player going to Rutgers from this Fall) and Rinzin (MMC, Nepal National player and as per one of the kale Refs after watching his skillz, "He got sum black in him").  They may be the best players where akin to the NBA the best players are the explosive first step guards like Kobe, Iverson, etc. but when it comes to winning a championship, its the fundamentals that count ala a Tim Duncan.  And that Duncan would defn be someone like Saurav.  Saurav is defn a very humble guy off court but when on it, he's a beast!  Opponents get flat-rolled over.  Not only that, DH has the best supporting cast too.

And for peeps complaining about the Shaq bodied tall guy in DH, quit being lil puzzies.  He's half Nepali and he should and needs to be allowed to play in the ANA.  This ain't Nepal where they have restrictions on Samten playing.  This Samten cat is half Tib and half white and does 360 jams, alleyhoops and has the hops of a grass-hopper...Just because he is half white, the NBA (Nepal Basketball Association) made rules barring him from playing in nepali tournaments but when there is a National competition, he is immediately called for practices.  Can you beleive that BS!!  Damn, he has lived in Nepal all his life and yet, banned!  Sometimes, our mentality that we Neps have disgust me to no avail.

Comin back to the ANA, I still believe that MMC was the most talented team this ANA but them losing to Boston was a huge disappointment (especailyl Boston paid Bipin $50 per game...unbelievable!!).  Maybe next year MMC would fare better.

Well ANA soccer has reached the different standard now. The team like DC who had former national star players such as Basanta Thapa, Dev Narayan Chaudahary and other 3-4 former U19 players still could not pass semi final. The semi game DC vs NYNYC was the biggest entertaining, with the biggest crowd in ANA history. I guess many people came to watch former national players....I was wondering how many more crowd would have if venue was close by the hotel.

Baltimore was lucky to win this years ANA cup, but hats off to NYNYC beating team like DC in semi and plus they have been in ANA finals for last five years.

Samsara speaks the truth.  Saurav is the best.  By the way, any list of best ANA players should also include Ritesh from DCAC.  That dude always comes up big in the big games.  He was also playing on one leg and almost led his team back to the title.  He kind of gets forgotton because everyone talks about all these midgets, but he is for real.

Levar is right about Ritesh, however, you have to realize that he sat
out the semi finals. I can imagine guys on the other team would have
loved a similar opportunity. Although he played on one leg, did not
look it. Normally, on legged players at least limp. This thread is
interesting. No one has once mentioned DCAC. I think that they are the
best team. They go 10 deep and there really is no drop off when going
to the bench. I dont know if I was the only one that noticed from the
stands, but the bench was in fact better than the starting five. Maybe
they should have started the bench instead. But they pulled the Nepali
Congress and the old guys had to play because of seniority.

The other thing that is always said amongst Nepalis when it comes to
basketball is the excuse that a team is not "big" enough. I mean,
would a player like Bipin or Sonam have the same explosiveness had
they been 6 ft tall? Ok, they might jump higher, but then they would
be much slower. I think that it is a credit to teams like DCAC and DH
that they can have a starting five which includes guards that are 6 ft
tall. There is a certain skill required in that and it obviously gets
overlooked.

MMC was a really good team, I just can't believe that they lost to
Boston the second time around. I mean, the score in the first game was
close, but that did not tell half the story. It should have been a
blow out. So it makes me think, how are you going to blow a team out
the first game and then lose to them in the second game.

NYNYC was talented. However, they were not a team. It was a two man
show with a few guys filling in when times were good. Once the other
team started hitting a few shots, they self-destructed. Hopefully,
they will take the team concept more seriously next year. I have to
give credit to Boston, although they came up short, they really played
their hearts out. That being said, no matter how fancy Sonam and
Rinzin were, Bipin was so much better because he played with a heart
of a lion.

Sleepyspur, you cannot honestly say DCAC is the best team. I agree that they have the deepest squad but that does not mean they are the best team. They physically dominate other teams the other ANA teams who may be far more skilled.  I mean yea Ritesh is a good player. He can push around the pygmies and bull his way to the hoop against many of the ANA teams, but when he faces other good defensive big men like Mridesh from NYNYC or Bigyan from DH his progress is halted so he is forced to shoot jumpers.  The same can be said of their team, they just bully and beat up smaller weaker squads with their physical play but when facing an equally physical squad they struggle a lot. This was shown as they were getting dominated by DH before the hometown refs and timeskeeper intervened to make it a respectable final score.

Also, the guy Peace1 lacks any semblance of basketball knowledge. This guy reminds me of the 15 year old kids who post on youtube and swear that Hot Sauce from AND1 is greatest basketball player of all-time. These novices do not realize that there is more to basketball than fancy dribbles and footspeed. The objective of the game is to put the ball in the hoop. As good as Bipin or Sonam they are strictly perimeter players, they do not possess a threat to score in the post and rarely rebound the ball. Saurav is far more versatile as he is able to score off the ball in post-up situations plus he rebounds from the guard position. I doubt that this impresses you tho since rebounding, passing, and defense are secondary to flashy dribbles and "trick shots" in your mind. As you so eloqently put it  "So, in Bball all it matters is height and little ball handling and shooting skill. " Great analysis.

Also, I agree with Sleepyspur that the NYNYC team was not really a team. They couldnt handle the pressure when those two twins from San Jose started dropping threes on them. They came into the tournament cocky as hell with their "college player" and didnt even make it out of the quarterfinal..lol.

Jackie, you are right about DCAC. They are physical to a point of being dirty. They hit San Jose with so many dirty nasty fouls that the kids from San Jose just stopped playing. Other teams like MN and DH are physical too, but they do not try and hurt other players. I mean, the entire starting five would have fouled out if it weren't for their deep bench. Oh well, thats just me putting it out there. Now, in terms of the time keeping, I dont know if it was just me... but watching from the stands it felt like 2 games... It was quite funny, one of the DH players asked the time keeper right after a dc time out was called "hey, how many seconds left before the half" .... the time keeper responded by "10 minutes"... not just me, but my friends in the stands were cracking up...

Regardless, DC made quite a comeback. They almost won the game and that showed a lot of guts. The MVP for their team was definitely Mahip.

Who the heck is Mahip? Is he is that 16 year old kid with the bottom lip like Bubba Gump. Man, that kid was everywhere. But he missed some critical freethrows late in the game. That being said, that kid is a future star. His pressure defense was incredible at times. Which leads me to my next point. Why do they only reward scorers and offensive play at this tournament. The MVP and best scorer awards were the only individual awards. Why not a defensive player award? Or a newcomer award? I'd give Mahip the newcomer award cause he is so young and was a key piece for DC despite his bottom lip affecting his balance at times. For defensive player of the tournament I'd have to give it to Bigyan from DH. Although he lets his emotions get the best of him many times, he dominated the paint in every game I saw him play. He swatted shots and rebounded with a great ferocity. He dominated games without scoring a lot of points. After him, Ritesh and Mridesh showed good shotblocking and rebounding ability as well. On the perimeter defense, Sonam and Rinzin made it difficult for opposing guards to advance the ball upcourt. Unfortunately, they couldnt guard the three pointer..

Bubba!!! Lol, that was funny. mahip is the #23 player on the dc team. he was their best player... bubba gump, the young kid, played pretty well, but mainly garbage points... I think they should also give out defensive player awards, but it should not be based on the number of blocks and steals... i think defense is hard to quantify, you d have to look at the overall defensive presence, whether it means, weakside help or making up for a teammate's lapse... the #15 in DH, dont know what his name is, but he played well on defense... it was funny watching him make dirty plays against dc... at one point he was on the floor hanging on to this fat point guard's ankle... a lot of dirty harmless plays, but no hard dirty fouls... he really had the dc fans booing him every time he touched the ball... its quite ironic, the DC fans did not notice the hard and dirty foouls their own team was committing in a regular basis... what happened to last year's rishi muni from DC??? he only played a few minutes... maybe he should grow back his beard... last year, he was their best player...

Anyway, I over heard a lot of people talk about how NYNYC, DCAC and MMC were the clear favorites... however, it was teams like Boston and DC that made the news by winning.. Jackie Chan, why do you think these talented teams like NYNYC could not go past the quarter finals?

interesting discussion..

was wondering if anyof you guys do play ball during the ANA..looks like u all do...

as for sleepyspur's"why do you think these talented teams like NYNYC could not go past the quarter finals?".....i think it all depends upon practicing as a team for a lil longer period of time than what they usually do before the ANAs; then you might argue that teams like DH dont get to practice before the tourney as a team since they are from all over the place to which I'd say its all in the will to win and "who wants it more".DH does seem like a group of guys that want it real bad. On contrary, talking bout their game-plans,its all in the hands of saurav-the big guys  rebound then  fastbreak  and saurav gets to score the majority of the points;no wonder he scored 34 points all by himself in the finals. during the quarterfinals, dallas did manage to put a block on that strategy holding him to 3 points.but ya,thats their only style of game for the past 3 ANAs and surprisingly it has worked on most times.talking bout the finals this yr,dc did fail to man mr.mvp for reasons unknown .

i did have high hopes for mmc and it was sad to see them get eliminated during the quarters.the 2nd boston vs mmc game was indeed a highlight of the tournament.mmc does have skilled players that have been playing together since nepal and that counts big.

as for ny getting beat by san jose .it was the rainmakers the san jose triplets( twins and the look-alike) were making during the end that nynyc din have any answer for.and yes i do agree that besides 3 guys ,nynyc din have much talent.

dc on the other hand had the same familiar faces that has  been there since the start of the ANA bball in 2002 witht the exception of few young-guns.btw,think the name of the young guy form dc  is saurav not mahip.ritesh did look a lil injured during the finals but since he played during the game,so no excuses for him.he did played his heart out during the finals and so did guys like devashish and mahip.also, even though age is just  a no. some of the  guys in DC are def. gettin old and the team  needs to get out of the so called Nepali congress politics and play their best. the veterans can always remain as a good bench support .nevertheless, they always put a good show and are and will always be the team to beat .

the last seven yrs of ANA ball DH won 2 , DC won 3, and DALLAS has won 2.and dont forget DCs been to finals on all but one.dallas however hasnt won one without saurav.

overall if u rank all the teams THIS YEAR on the basis of winnings, which is the ultimate frontier,i'd say:

1. DH

2. DC

3. Boston

4. MMC

5. NYNYC

6. DALLAS

The others dont count in the sense that they didn't  show much this yr .

the argument bout the mvp is interesting as well. mvp definately goes to someone who carries their team ,without him the team definately falls apart. bipin is awesome but take him out of the team and boston is still a good team.take the fast-kid out of NYNYC and NYNYC can still survive.Take rinzin out from MMC and MMC still is a very good team; but take Saurav out of DH and where do they stand?? defintely at the bottom of the hill. So,as long as he wins titles,it looks like the mvp should go to him;without him the DH cant stand ,let alone fly( like hanuman).

overall,i enjoyed this yrs ANA bball  and thought that this was definately  a highlight of the whole ANA which did not have much charm .beside the venue which was tricky to locateand the 2nd court which was full of lines, the tournament was well organized.the girls from nebraska were awesome compared to who they were playing with.the ny girls looked like they would play good, all in vain.

THe final game between DH and DC was worth my money even though DC pulled in close a little late in the game.Other games that were enjoyable and exiting were

both MMC vs BOSTON game

DALLAS vs DH semis

NYNYC vs SAN JOSE quarterfinal

DC vs MINNESOTA quarterfinal

Virginia VS SAN JOSE groupstage

and thats bout it.

hopefully next yr at SAN FRANCISCO brings a better bball compition .

Sleepy, I think the reason that NYNYC could not advance past the quarters was that they were far too overconfident...Also, with the exception of the two guards and the dude with the molester moustache, they had no firepower...On a sidenote, the molester guy also had the ugliest and strangest looking shot of any player at this year's tournament..MMC, on the other hand was not coverconfident..they just lost to a team  (Boston) that outplayed them that particular day..I was suprised by all the hype surrounding MMC's big men before this tournament..the guys were supposed to be dunking, etc...although I dont know he could dunk, their biggest guy was softer than cotton candy...

To touch on what the previous poster was commenting about, I think DH success is due to the fact that for the most part guys know what their roles are..Yea, Saurav scores a good chunk of the points but the rebounds and passes that lead to these baskets go largely unnoticed...I agree that he is the MVP and no way that DH would win the championship without him, but your idea that DH cant "stand" without him is nonsense. .You witnessed the game between DH and Dallas?.. Saurav fouled out on the bench for the final 10 plus minutes...what happened then?? The rest of the guys simply picked up the slack... The bald guy was unstoppable hitting hook shots left and right and Bigyan (originally NYNYC player) was rebounding and defending like he did when he played for NY...The fact is if any one of these guys were not playing they would have no hopes to win the championship...

Also, I agree with your list as far as best teams for the most part..but how can you leave San Jose out when they took out NYNYC? Also, I got to give it up to minnesota. I used to play in pickup games in Nepal with Nikesh and he has gotten even better..Also, Anil(the big guy) from Minnesota who used to play soccer was suprisingly effective in the post...

As far as the best games..San Jose vs NY stood out...just unbelievable how the tide turned when those twins made threes...but the other games you mentioned were entertaining as well..

Hahaha, this retarded fool name “Jackiechan “cracked me up big time. Son, u must be on crack or something when u stared this thread or just a dimwit fool who is hoodwinking on this thread without any mere knowledge of the game. I mean, who the hell will start the thread claiming that ‘He” was in Nepal during the entire tourney and later writes in a thread like a wannabe critics. Listen fool, nowhere in my post have I mention about these guys (Bipin, Sonam) fancy dribbling skill nor I have put them in my best players list, just because they could dribble. Had u not been on crack during the entire game(if u even watched the game), you would have at least appreciate these guys talent. They were the players who shaped the whole team with their presences like every good point guard (dribbling, passing, and shooting) does. Seriously, you need a “Basketball for Dummy” book for yourself. Per your analysis, only the players who possess a threat to score in the post” are consider good players. Hum, is Kobe, Iverson, chris paul, a post players? Man, I may lack little basketball knowledge but you seriously lack ‘Metal knowledge’ and suggest u to see a doctor  before even writing on this thread. Where these fool comes out of??

Peace1, relax...its not that big a deal..the point jackie is trying to make is that versatility is important...nobody is claiming kobe, iverson, chris paul are post players...although if you watch nba, you can see that kobe spends a lot of time in the post...it makes him that much more effective than iverson or chris paul as a scorer...may be another reason that kobe got three rings and they got none...well i guess he had shaq...ah, nvm..

Peace1, I think what Jackie was referring to is your emphasis on how good Sonam and Rinzin are based on their dribbling ability. I think that you over look their overall impact on the game. Granted, they played well at both ends, but at the same time, they were not out their rebounding and guarding the hoop when the guards over gambled. In fact, how can you defend these guys when their team did not make it past the quarter finals. NYNYC lost to a team that was crushed by DC. Its one thing to say the shorties got lucky with their threes, but a lot of blame has to be put on NY for not handling the pressure and not defending. Its not whether they got hot or not, but more importantly, why were they even allowed to get hot in the first place. One thing that gets over looked is that guys like Sonam and Rinzin ran circles around the bigger guys, but once they faced guards their height who by no means were fast but could take care of the ball, they were out done. So much for the regular height argument.

As for MVP, no doubt, Saurav is the best. Credit has to be given to DH... note... the team... because they played as a team and each player filling their role to the best of their abilities. Position by position, DH has the best player... the have the best scorer, the best all around, the best rebounder and the best defender by far. DC has similar talent  level also, gusy like Bubba, Mahip and the back to back dirtiest player of the tournament: Devashish and Ritesh... but like LT said, if you aint cheating, you aint trying ;-)

Lil Silenze, Outsidaz I cannot understand the intent behind your posts...Are you trying to convince others that you are good at basketball?...You had your shot in Baltimore, and if I recall correctly yall didnt even win one game...lmao..And how does your statement that the majority of your team is still in college qualify as an excuse?? That is when your talent and athleticism should be at its peak...from 10th grade in high school to your senior year of college are the "golden years" for basketball if you just play recreationally....after college, you have to worry about getting a job raising a family and devote much less attention to playing basketball...so that makes it kind of funny that all of your young connecticut team whose lives revolve around basketball got beat by a prehistoric DC squad--a team of older guys who just play for fun...and they not only beat you, they literally dominated your weak squad...and no, it wasnt just because of the size differential...they just had wayyy more heart than your wannabe and1 squad...the sad thing is yall cry about other teams being much bigger than yall, why dont you just stop whining and get in the weightroom or go drink some protein shakes...There are only 7 good teams from the ANA...they are DH,DC,MMC,NYC,NANC, Boston, and Minnesota....every other team is average or below average..and who the hell is Dipesh??...is he that one guy on your team that made a couple of "lucky shots" in traffic to cut your deficit in the DC game from 30 to 26...maybe if he practices real hard, and makes a few more lucky shots he might win the most improved player next year..
