Among few nations, Nepal is like a sweetheart of developed nations where countries like US, Japan, Germany, UK, and several others pour fund for its development but where is the developement??

I always wonder when I read news like below, what actually happens to the donations and funds! The answer is simple in context of Nepal - Handful individuals reap the benefits and the entire nation just plunges deeper and deeper into the fathomless depths of international debt.

Just a thought. And I wonder again where this UN money will go.....will it meet the objectives as mentioned in the news??????

UN approves USD 10m assistance to Nepal

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday approved US$10 million assistance to Nepal from the United Nations Peace-building Fund, which was established two years ago to help countries emerging from conflict consolidate their gains and avoid slipping back into bloodshed.

According a UN statement, following UNSG's declaration of Nepal's eligibility for the fund in December, more than 20 UN agencies came together in consultation with partners to review the peace building challenges ahead, and the possible contributions the UN system could make as the peace process enters its next phase.

The statement quoted Ian Martin, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Chief of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), as saying the peace building contribution was at the core of the UN response strategy. "With the elections behind us, we have entered a complex period of transition in Nepal, with heightened expectations from the Nepalese people, two thirds of whom live on less than $2 a day," he said.

"Strengthening the State's capacity to sustain peace is a priority area for peace building assistance," Robert Piper, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nepal has been quoted.

Possible target areas for the funds include supporting the Constituent Assembly and promoting human rights; recovery of communities and areas affected by conflict, for example, through "food and cash for work programmes", school feeding projects, skills training for youth and other initiatives that accelerate the tangible benefits of peace and development; and conflict prevention and reconciliation issues, for example, assistance to cantonments and reintegration of former combatants and internally displaced persons or support to land and property mediation.

Assistance from the Peace-building Fund will be channelled through an existing funding mechanism -- the United Nations Peace Fund for Nepal, which is governed by an Executive Committee consisting of the Special Representative, Resident Coordinator and representatives from the government and the donor community. nepalnews.com ia Sep 10 08

After all these years of pondering what exactly is our problem, I've been very much convinced that it has nothing to do with the lack of education, we're NOT an idiot society, nor are we starving like the Africans that you see on TV with flies and bloated bellies. It is a reflection of who we are and what we believe and the culture that has shaped us. Let us be honest if I were in Nepal and if I had my hand on those funds and charity, I will gladly do that same like everybody i.e pocket the money. Here's the mentality "Who cares? I've kids to feed and some more houses to add to impress my neighbor"
Our culture that we all love so much never goes beyond "MY(I only care about my family)" and "I". There is no "WE". So until we change it to say "WE", it does NOT matter how educated, smart or sophisticated our brain/lifestyle become, we'll never get over the problem. No society is perfect, ours is not even on the list to be compared with the rest of the world. I look at myself and like everybody here I'm proud to say that "I come form a descent family". Well as I'm getting golder I'm realizing the word "descent" is very deceptive in terms of our belief. There are many rudimentary flaws that my parents and the society taught me, simple put, I'm selfish, greedy and given a chance, I'll NOT care about any others and pocket it if given the slightest chance. In short we need to make some changes in our culture, beliefs and faith to improve the hygiene and most of all, those needs to be passed on to our kids. That $10 millions is gone up in the smoke, trickled down to few dollars when it reaches the destination.
Just my 2 cents.

'After all these years of pondering what exactly is our problem' = You could have repharsed this sentence as 'After all these years of pondering, what did you find out?? = would have been lot more easier for me to answer.

Anyway, I will try to answer ur concern = My exact problem is why we still have such corrupted mindset in the govt? Will it ever change? Why we are still lagging behind? You said education is not a factor but how is it so?

'Let us be honest if I were in Nepal and if I had my hand on those funds and charity, I will gladly do that same like everybody i.e pocket the money. Here's the mentality "Who cares? I've kids to feed and some more houses to add to impress my neighbor' =

Do every nepali think this way? Is this your opinion? = Rewire bro.

I look at myself and like everybody here I'm proud to say that "I come form a descent family' = This sentence contradicts your statement (everyone wants to impress their neighbors in idiotic society of Nepal). If you had had hands on those funds, would you erect 5 story house?? Remember you are from a decent family. And honesty is one of the characters that defines decency.

"corrupted mindset in the govt"
They are there because of us, remember we elect them. Our society and culture makes them, they do NOT come from a foreign land. So pointing fingers at them is not the solution. I am pointing my finger onto myself, which we lack in our society.
"
You said education is not a factor but how is it so?"
This is just my personal belief. Education simply brings awareness, nothing else. But if we do not have a society where we CANNOT put those into practice,a society that does not foster those ideas into ACTION, then it is as good as having hypothetical theories, no real experiments.

"
descent family"
You're missing my point. We all call ourselves decent but not true to our selves. When it involves our family that are involved in corruption, then we turn our blind eyes and stand by them in the name of "blood", but we still think we are a descent family.

The simple reason behind this is that we do not love our country. When you are in foreign land and curse in at different stages for being from the third world country like here in sajha by guys like Bikashjyu or Nas, then you realize if you were from some developed countries, if you were proud to pronounce the name of your country among others. You won't have much cared about the development if you hadn't face such situation. so everyone is selfish. How can we expect form other people who never know if they will get this opurtunity again to be a "descent family".

'You're missing my point' = Rewire.

You missed some grave points that I made i.e. I always wonder when I read news like this. I have been sajhagoer for more than five months now and saw this as a opportunity to exchange ideas and views. You can find plethora of threads that pertains to vast array of topics that range from entertaintment to politics to gossips and so on and my thread usually deals with issues of funds, developments, nepal's rich biodiversity.

Education brings awareness = Before sajha I had no place to turn to for expressing my views and frustrations. And tell me, how many threads do you see that talks about how much nepal got etc?

I will try to keep track (I will just pluck it out from newspaper and that is the only source I have) and keep posting in Sajha so people can at least get an idea how much money is being poured in Nepal anually! Just a rough guessitimate.

So far, US gave $50,000 for flood victims and now UN is funding $10 million dollars for peace keeping process.

Drop in your views etc.

If your intention was to show figures and exchange estimates, then I'm sorry. I was going for the social/cultural point of view for the reason why funds and charity money disappear. Yes, the figures, if utilized every cents, is enough to bring major relief to the victims. But then again, it is not the first nor it is the last time where money will disappear with out reaching the intended groups of people. If only half of the money that were poured since the beginning were utilized for the right purpose, our history would have been different than what we have now.
Have a great day.

Rewire bro,

I do not really care about societal rules. If a nation collapse so will its society. With repeated attacks from incompetent leaders, Nepal is being pushed to the brink of devastation from all aspects - be it economic, be it environment and be its own societal values where 3-4 millions of immigrants is pushing for their own language.

I got very interested in knowing the fate of funds and even got more interested with the recent trip to Nepal. I know there is a huge leakage somewhere, someplace and my future work may be related to that. And in sajha u can find all kinds of minds. This is the place to discuss all sorts of things.

hey guys,

comment that you all made have some valid reason. these really goes to nepal and ofcourse our government do take some of them in their pocket. but not everything. and anyway these money are not just a charity or giveaway. the news says that its been donated. but never have these money been donated. this is a loan. we gotta pay'em back. and like some body said, people who has the authority is our chosen government. but again and again we are making the mistake. so why some of you all dont think education has nth to do with it. the governments has been making people who are not educated a bakra. eg. maobadi look at them. they exploited our poor and uneducated in such a way that they dont even care about their life. anyway, lets forget these. but corruption does not happen only because of these political parties. the truth is that they are the only some part of these corruption. the starting point of these corruption happens from the lower level. just think about it. do you feel corrupted when political people takes some amount of money being donated by so called developed nation or do you feel corrupted when u as a citizen have to pay some amount of money(described as ghush) just to get a driving license, which u dont even pay here. i am not talking about the fees and yes this dont apply in kathmandu and some other major cities. do you feel corrupted when some rich bussiness man give money to political people to get their work done(which here they call commission) or when police, army or some other authority in the airport ask money to you just to enter the country. probably you might not have heard about this, but my brother has dealt in this situation. so all of you guys, i dont say u guys are wrong. but i just want you all to think, is it good enough just to blame political parties or people about corruption.

drop your views

corruption, bribery, brown-nosing plagues our society. poverty is to blame partially and above all our incompetent leaders. our entire system is corrupted.

you don't have to give an example of your brother. everytime i land/take off in/from TIA, i get surrounded with people who extend their help in exchange of fat tips. they won't budge even if you refuse cause u are alone and exhausted and is overwhlemed with so many "GOOD SAMARITANS' around you. your baggage will be in their hands before u know it. u keep yelling 'PARDAINA, PARDAINA' and run behind them in fear of losing ur luggage and valuables. tourists face even worse welcome. this is just an example.

aren't these employees supposedly getting paid via govt.?? aren't they there to help or facilitate travellers to make their journey smooth??

the environment in govt. and INGO offices is no different than that at the airport. u don't need an to army bring change. need an individual with a strong will and determination.

revolution starts from a single mind and a single household. maoist movement started from prachandes house in chitwan valley. we all know that.

i believe there are tons of nepalese who are honest and hardworking but the question is has our corrupt system become so powerful that not even a single person can stand up to it??????????
