HEY I AM CURIOUS TO KNOW THE SALARY OF OUR PRESIDENT? DID ANYBODY MENTION HIS SALARY. I AM NOT SURE FOR HOW MUCH THOSE PARTIES ARE  WILLING TO PAY TO THE PRESIDENT. I DON'T THINK HE IS GETTING THE SAME AS OUR KING (TEMPORARILY IN VACATION) USED TO GET.

President gets around Rs 75,000 + allowances + all expenses (fuel, gas, electricity, rent or whatever) are paid by government and vice president gets around Rs 60,000 + allowances + expenses paid by government.

This is far less than the dethroned king, but still is like keeping white elephants especially in teh case of veep who does not have any job/work to do in that post.

I say, elevate the salary levels of the public servants - beaurocrats and politicians - sufficiently so that they do not have to resort to corruption.  If that can be done - much like in Singapore and most developed nations - then I believe the corruption can be minimized.

How can a section officer who earns around Rs.7000 afford to rent an apartment (typically more than Rs.5000 in Kathmandu), send kids to school (typical tuition Rs.500), eat (typical monthly grocery bill for four Rs. 10,000), etc.?  With high cost of living, bribes have become not only a systemic vice but also a necessity.

Once the salaries are appropriately raised and the inflation is kept in check, then there should be a severe penalty for those who still resort to corruption.

Riten,

For Nepal "Once the salaries are appropriately raised and the inflation is kept in check" is a contradicting statement. You need measures to control that (which are in place), but there is no way to control them because of dependence on foreign powers for sustainability, it seems. So, I don’t think its happening anytime soon.

MN Nepal,

I agree with you about the inflation. If you want to see your country better than this, first step is to raise the sallary. Do you see not many people are willing to stay in Nepal? That was one of the reason. Despite having a reputed post I had to leave for better off.

So, tell me, who do you want to see rule the country? Best, and most capable person in the country or the incompetent? If you scared of salarary increment, and inflation just for that, you got no gut for sure. We got to find the other ways to get recovered, not by paying less to the Gov servant/officer. We have a developing country, obviously we will have some inflation in the begining. Even US has huge inflation and debt. I don't think you would suggest US Gov to stop borrowing money from China. Anyway, I am quite hopeful of the Nepalese future now, if nothing wrong goes in the Gov! ;-)
