I am once again deeply saddened, angered, dismayed and grieved with this news that we lost one more friend; I am finding it really hard to express myself. The frequencies of such news have been ever increasing. I find it an utmost urgent that we should spread this word to the younger generation back home that this country is not a bed or roses. If possible convince them to weigh their options around in their own country. Ashok Bhattarai who is the recent victim of this burglary/shoot out is not "no body" but he is a brother of entire Nepali community who are living abroad and trying to make their ends meet. We all arrive here thinking that this is the land of opportunity and it will make us a billionaire one day but see what happened.

Now his dreams are shattered and his parents’ hopes are devasted. What happened with him hurts me and it hurts me the most because I left my country a decade ago with similar hope and dreams and I could very well have been the guy behind that counter. We all know where we come from and how hard it is for us to survive in this foreign country. Let us all pray for him together and hope that such terrible news will never hit our media again. Let’s unite to make us hear. People who have succeeded to come here before our generations and own such places like 711, motels or Gas Stations use these innocent people like Ashok and pay him below minimum wage and get their work done.

Do you think the United States government is unaware of that, should not they do something? Ever worried about illegal immigrants in this country what I believe is that the government should go behind such employers and thoroughly investigate the employer so that they will not hire another new Nepali who lands in this country with hopes to change his life.

I know a lot of debate will spur with this but what if the United States provides student loan for qualified students; just like it does for the permanent resident "Green Card Holder". I can assure you that if we are allowed to even apply for these Federal loans then we won’t be racking up our credit card bills and hence would rather concentrate on finishing up the schools than trying to work on such cheap risky places. I know most of the people who land in this country have never done any of the work that we end up doing here and we do pick such jobs, not by choice but by compulsion of circumstances.

While the Global economy is still in a mesh don’t you think the international society invests in future of these you people? Also it would be relevant to say that 80% of students who arrive here are already highly educated and any countries that are willing to invest in their future will surely get decent returns.

What do you say? Post your views and comments at http://blog.nayanepalnews.com/

I am totally agree with you. Also we could mention that if people are so eager about america  then they can come to US after completion of their Under Graduate degree so that they doesn't have to struggle hard as present Undergraduates most of whom are ruining their future as well as putting their lives in high risks for little sum of dollars, which is must, in order to outcome the high bills of colleges, housings and lot more.

MulanKhare My deepest condolence and heartful prayers to Ashok and his family.Words cannot do justice to this tragic loss of such a young man and the grief of his family. YET I do understand the pain that loved ones goes through when a productive, and loving member of a family, and a loved member of a very close community such as our Nepalese community looses a precious soul to a senseless crime. My family recently lost a very dear family freind whom we had known for years even in Nepal. he had practically helped me figure America out when I was new to this country, kinda like a mentor who thrusted confidence in me to make it through in America. he always spoke highly about this Nation and was him self well established in the system, BUT was murdered senlessly in a Gas station for being in the wrong place in the wrong time. WE LOST HIM and his dear presesnce and  company, may his soul rest in peace. We cannot justify the loss of a loved one or blame the society as a whole for a crime committed by a senseless criminal who should burn in Hell. I can understand the anger and frustation because the murderer who killed our family friend is still at loose. We are very angry at how less has been done to try and capture the criminal due to lack of strong evidence. Ashok was a victem of a cowardly act of desperate criminal whose crime should be punished by the most brutal way possible.  You are right that these crimes happen way too many times, but sadly no one can predict when and where it strikes. We come to this Nation in hopes of a better life, quality education and carry the hopes of many at home and abroad. Reality is with due respect MulanKhare is that we Nepalese as students do not come here with legal permission to work, or with a sound bank account And for a Nepalese parent to support their kids school here is next to impossible and students are aware of this. I myself  as a teenager, 12 years ago worked like a slave at any job I could get my hands on to put me through school and over and overcome obstacles in order to achieve the so called American dream which I am still chasing with great confidence and hope. AND it infuriates me to see someone so young's life put an abrupt halt FOR NO REASON AT ALL so vibrent , full of life and dreams ... AND now all shattered.  But if all Nepalese students arent given jobs like the one Ashok had and many students alike still have, there is no way one can survive America. If American Government imposes strict rules against the busssinesses hiring someone without papers than I think It would be safe to assume that students should stop even comming to study in America or anywhere in the world where their parents cant afford to pay the fees. MulanKhare there are so many students that come to study here from around the worls and Nepal being one of the poorest countries many students have been able to provide a better life to their loved ones at home, There is no way America will give students loan to International students because of the number of Int students and in all fairness of their situation. It is though a good thought that if the government could help so people dont have to look for such jobs that can be targets of senseless crimes, but violence and crimes dont come announced and there is no way to predict when and where it will happen. Thats why people take chances like you mentioned under compulsion of circumstances but not by choice. Reality is we are from Nepal the poorest country and America is the land of opportunity if you believe it. Untill the streets are safer and crimes go down senseless crimes will keep on occuring, THat will not however stop people to look for jobs to help them survive this unforgiving student years and the System. MANY of us who have lived through harsh times of a student can understand the risks and danger we face BUT compared to thousands of Nepalese working in war ridden countires like Iraq, Lebanon etc and also middle eastern countries and many other countries of the world compared to them America is still the safest place to work, even compared to NEPAL and the recent crimes that has plauged our country. I am very SAD by the loss of Ashok and only brings fresh grief of our own loss but reading your article reminds me of my self trying to BLAME someone and everyone for the act of a heartles criminal that took a loved one away from us. let us all pray for all the souls that have been a victim of senseless crimes and ask God to protect all those Nepali workers in USA and around the world from harms way. I dont know the answer on how to solve this issue but no matter how many times a Nepali is lost, that hasn't dettered another to pursue their goals in life no matter the situation or circumstances are. Its a sad time AND A HUGE LOSS but the battle to survive and make it still lives on the lives of thousands of Nepalese in and around the world. You know whats an even better solution???? Make Nepal peacefull, rich , stable and UNITED that we Nepalese can get everything in Nepal without having to seek a better living in other countries sometimes having to deal with the ultimate sacrifice. YES then I believe international mortality rate of Nepalese will go down untill then lets all be safe and strong and united, this is life and its not fair. Lastly this TRAGIC incident is an isolated event NO one is to blame EXCEPT THAT CRIMINAL MURDERER WHO SHOULD BURN IN HELL.

It is obviously bad to have such a devastating incident. My condolence to the family and relatives of Mr Bhattarai.

Just not working in the store does not at help at all, especially for the student. But, we should be educated or help  to educate people how to avoid such thing, if possible. I came after undergrad in Nepal so did not have to work at the store, as I had some other resources from the university too. But, this does not apply for all of us. It would be great if some experienced one could share helpful tips to stay away from shoot out or something like this.

Like, if someone is with the gun or any sort of weapons in the store don't confront. Let her/him take the things he wants, you can report this later to the police or your employees. Being too friendly with these craps (especially African-American) could also lead to a loophole for them to encourage. From the video, it sounds like killer was quite familiar with the store or was well informed about the position of employee. Just a thought.

I think nothing could be more tragic than parents performing the last rites for a deceased child. May Ashok's parents find solace at this irreplaceable loss.

To the young people who want to go to a developed country to work and study, explore the best prospects for your unique situation before making a decision. For those who have already left the country, do not sacrifice too much of your health and safety for a little bit more money. Spend less, work less but study more.
