UNCC Charlotte Instructor Narayan Dhakal found beaten

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct 17

A local college math teacher is in a coma after nearly being beaten to death.

A driver, Meredith Richi, found 42-year-old Narayan Dhakal lying faced down, left for dead in the middle of East Eighth Street in uptown Charlotte around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Richi said she doesn't want to be considered a Good Samaritan. In fact, she said at first she thought the man lying in the street was a trap because another man had just tried to flag her down.

"(I thought) they were both homeless. They were setting me up. It's 1:30 in the morning," she said. "So I decided to call 911, drive around him, pick up my friend and come back so at least I had somebody else with me."  Richi quickly realized something was terribly wrong.
"When I pulled up onto Eight Street and I shined my lights on him, I realized he was lying in a pool of blood. So I jumped up out of the car, still on the phone with 911," she said. "When I got out of the car and asked him if he was OK, he didn't respond, so I told him that help was on the way."

Officers said when they arrived, they discovered Dhakal's wallet and cell phone were missing so it took them several days to determine his identity.
Whatever his identity, Richi was glad she could help.

"I know that if it were my brother, my fiance or my dad laying in the middle of the street, I would hope that someone would stop and help them. So that was something else that ran through my head, 'This is someone's loved one,'" Richi said.

Dhakal's brother, Abi, said his brother has been teaching at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for two years and is currently pursuing a second master's degree. He said Narayan Dhakal was in the middle of a busy, stressful semester and was trying to blow off steam by going to Bar Charlotte in uptown Thursday night.

Abi Dhakal said his brother met a friend at the bar but the two left separately. Police said some time after that, Dhakal was robbed and beaten, and may have lain in the road for hours.

"Suddenly, the thing comes in my mind, the picture that he's laying there. Oh my God," Abi Dhakal said. "And to see a guy that regularly goes to the gym, runs, teaching, going to school full of energy all of the sudden zombied up, it's like, gosh, I can't believe this."

He said his brother was getting the second degree so he could leave teaching and work in finance, which is why he moved to Charlotte.
Dhakal said police have leads in the case, but officers have not arrested any suspects in the attack.

Narayn Dhakal Originally from Jhapa, Nepal has been in USA for last 16 years and got his BS degree from Troy State University and Masters Degree from Auburn University in Alabama Majoring in Mathematics.  After getting his masters he moved to Greenbelt, Maryland and taught Mathematics at Montgomery College, Marymount University and American University in DC.

He Moved to Charlotte, NC and was working on  his second Master Degree at University of North Carolina in Financial Mathematics so he could work in Financial Institution as an Actuarial.

As Martha Stewart would say, "That is Not a good thing"!!  My prayers are with Dhakal and his family...Hoping for a speedy recovery and most importantly, the perpetrators are punished to the full extent of the law!!

BTW, this incident is a brutal reminder to all Neps in hick-towns all across the US to never ever go drinking out alone.  If you ain't got buddies who stick out for you then you gotta watch your back and stop going to white/racist drunk peeps infested areas in these red-neck infested, god-foresaken towns!!  Or even if the Dhakal case may be a mugging scenario gone wrong, a friend by your side would make the odds of you being robbed a lil less fo' sho.  I feel we as Neps have all accumulated book-smarts by going to college and all that BS but its time the street-smarts is embedded into our thick-skulls!!  Better safe than sorry.

No diss to Dhakal, but its time Neps stopped being the victim and solutions are being passed along in sajha to avoid any further catastrophes.  Like I said ealier, I sincerely hope his family and loved ones help him and themselves overcome this fatal incident.  My prayers are with his loved ones.

Samsara, Charolotte might be a hicktown but it's full of nigga's.. I was there a few months ago and I went to that area called uptown to party with a few of friends. It's a hip place to be but, it is full of black dude's.. I am pretty sure it was a black guy and not any redneck or white people.. That city is pretty diverse, I have known Narayan for quite a few years. He had a tendency to hang out by himslef, he would go to clubs alone..
You are right.. guy's and gal's don't go to clubs alone, go with a friend, specially a nepali friend cause We Nep's don't run away when a friend is in trouble.. we stick our neck, you mess with my friend than you mess with me. I have had such run in's a few times with my white friends and they were surprised I was backing them up like it was my fight.
Can't help it.. that's nepali's 2nd nature.. a friend in need is a friend indeed.

I hope he recovers quickly and the muggers are put behind bars..

I'm with you CHOR. Even though it looks more typical white racist's trademark of beating somebody really bad, we have to keep in mind that Charlotte is full of blacks. We should not make any hasty judgement. It could be Hispanic too.

You guys stop generalising and poinitng fingers at one race or a community for a crime may be done by someone completely different. It could be some nepalis who beat him up, couldn't it?

Even though I do not know the victim, I hope he recovers quickly.

UNC Charlotte professor found beaten
10/15/2008 07:38 PM
By: Johnell Johnson

Narayan Dhakal
CHARLOTTE -- A UNC Charlotte instructor is fighting for his life after what police are calling a brutal beating.

Two people found Narayan Dhakal early Friday morning in uptown, but because he was so badly beaten, it took police days to identify him.

"I found a man face down in the middle of Eighth Street," said Meredith Richi.

"He didn't look good," Nathan Kawalerski, the other person who found Dhakal's badly-beaten body, said. "He was kind of like almost snoring his own blood."

Instructor beaten
News 14 Carolina's Johnell Johnson has more on a UNC Charlotte instructor put into a coma after a brutal beating.
Richi and Kawalerski quickly called police and emergency crews rushed him to the hospital. But it was still unknown who he was.

"It took us a few days to figure out who he was and that hindered the investigation a little bit," said Officer Bob Fey of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The only thing police had to go on at first was a wristband from The Forum nightclub, but Dhakal's brother, Abi Dhakal, soon started asking questions when he found that his brother was missing.

With the help of Abi Dhakal, police made identified the man three days later. Since then, for friends and family members, it has been a nonstop search for those responsible.

"This is something that our civilized society can't accept," Abi Dhakal said. "We've got to find the culprit."

On Wednesday afternoon, they went door-to-door asking questions about Dhakal, hoping for answers and a miracle.

"He's not in good health," the victim's brother said. "He's really sick and we want to see him come back again."

Dhakal remains in a coma at Carolinas Medical Center.

Police believe someone saw what happened to Narayan Dhakal. They have found his credit cards and cell phone and several people of interest have been interviewed, but so far no arrests have been made.
